| News Comment | This Week — So what next? Three Premiership coping strategies at 15:00:52
I'm not convinced that BE/FB necessarily have a medium to long term plan at all. If they did then I would have expected sound bites concerning a new academy from which the club could develop its own players. That would fit their notion of the Club working within its 'limited' means and give it an alternative to paying inflated prices, or at least paying high wages, for/to established players. Something has to give. I can't see us being competitive with the current squad. And, if we become Premiership whipping boys then squad moral will take a nose dive despite Warnock's management skills. You say it's early days insofar as transfer dealings are concerned but we missed the boat with Graham and it seems that Warnock wanted him. We've had more time to prepare for transfers than Swansea who only recently gained promotion. Why were we not ready when opportunity knocked? I appreciate you say that Rogers knew Graham of old but it was no means certain Swansea would go up and yet we were already there. We could have secured our man before Swansea even knew their fate. This lack of commitment from the Club makes me side with the idea that BE/FB are minded to sell. If BE/FB want to sell the Club I'd guess they'd want to do so when its value is highest. For me, that time is now. We've gained promotion. We've secured the right to Premiership income and currently we are not the whipping boys that some predict we will be. But, that could all change if we fail to invest in players and start the season badly. A losing pattern all of next season followed by relegation would surely mean the Club is less valuable than it is now and then it would be something of a lottery attempting winning promotion yet again. Too many demoted teams have shown how difficult that is - take Boro' for example. BE/FB must surely see this. Alternatively, if they wanted to make shed loads of money from making us a top four team then they'd need yet another approach with massive investment along the lines of Man City and Chelsea and we all know that's not going to happen. I'm guessing the current status quo indicates they want out. It's only a guess though. Who knows with this lot! |
