Could This Be Russell Martin's Last Game ?

A heavy defeat would surely do for him as Saints manager, we can't go on doing the same things and getting the same results

Great Southampton V Liverpool Games Of The Past
at 13:06 22 Nov 2024

Their have been some great fixtures both at the Dell & St Mary's in the past, who can remember some of them.

The 4-2 game in October 1989 springs to mind, 4-1 to Saints when Liverpool were at the peak of their powers.

Likewise Valentines Day 1994 when in the snow we beat them 4-2.

August 2000 when 3-0 down with 17 minutes to go we came back to draw 3-3 was another memorable game.

Who can remember these and what other games were classics

That is the whole point about stadium expansion, you have to spend a lot of money in doing it, so you need to be able to fill it week in week out regardless of results.

Whether the team is doing well should not be a reason for building a stadium, you have to consider what crowds will be like if we are not doing well.

Middlesbrough and Sunderland both expanded their stadiums and in their last spells in the Premier League rarely filled the increased capacity's

Yes for those turning out week in week out paying out for a cup game might be a step too far, but that is when you find out the appetite in the rest of the data base and there seems to be little showing at the moment.

As it stands only around 18,000 Saints supporters have bought tickets for this one so far

Does Shea Charles Prove That Russell Martin's Player Judgement is Flawed
at 11:06 20 Nov 2024

Whilst the club has people in the recruitment department who identify potential targets, it is the manager who will have the final say, even SFC realise that there is no point in buying a player unless the manager is going to play him.

The point of the article was about Martin's ability to work with the squad that he has to hand, rather than whether he is good in the transfer market.

Spot on, that is what I have been saying for a long while, Martin's problem is that he cannot accept this and adapt the style to suit his squad

Those that travel from distance have a genuine excuse for not making a long journey in midweek, but the reality is that a very large proportion of our regular home support comes from a radius of around 40-50 miles.

So if you add on those that can't get tickets etc on the data base we probably have another 30,000 people who are not regular fans, that should mean that for a game like this we should not have a problem selling out.

Games like this with the prevalent attitude being that things are c*** so I'm not going, show why St Mary's has never been expanded in almost 24 years of it's existence.

To be blunt our support is just too fickle, if those fans that purport to be die hard loyals and have season tickets and go to away games can just turn their back, what hope have we of increasing our fan base and expanding the stadium.

There has been a lot of moaning of late about the manager, but what has actually been done aside from individuals moaning about it on the internet.

The answer is absolute zero, I have said this several times over the years, but if someone is so concerned about the manager and the owners, then why don't they do something tangible and actually organise a protest.

If those that are going to boycott the game turned up and protested outside, then that would send a big message, but for most in this modern day and age, that is actually too much effort.

Of course I would not expect those living outside the area to turn up and do this, but if we can't raise a few hundred people from a 50-60,000 database to do this it tells you something

Whilst I do agree with a lot you are saying, the fact is that the cup game is a one off match and you never know could go either way and we could find ourselves in a cup semi final.

This is one game when it might not be boring

So last season was boring because we were unbeaten and passing it around but winning and this season is boring because we are getting beaten.

Such sad news about legendary Dave Watson
at 13:40 18 Nov 2024

My understanding is that SFC did not do anything for Chris Nicholl as they were concerned that it would stir up a hornet's nest in regard to the Bob Higgins sexual abuse case, Chris was manager of the club from 1985-1991, the time when most of the allegations were centred on, there had been a lot of stuff in the media and a report that found SFC had failed to act on the situation at the time.

The feeling was that if the club had given a big tribute to Chris it would have brought much of this up again and impacted on his family.

So it is harsh to blame the club over this, in fact it is the opposite, they had actually been very sensitive to the situation and Chris's family and not opened a potential can of worms for them as they grieved their loss.

As far as im aware his family knew the situation and they have not criticised the club publicly.

However so I'm also told the when the Nicholl family wanted to hold the wake at St Mary's they were quoted the extortionate price that everyone has to pay.

That is not Sport Republic's fault, just those who run the catering side of the club, who showed no real knowledge of the club or its history

My silence is deafening because I havent heard anything about a boycott for either game, nor have i spoken to anyone who has mentioned it.

The nearest is people moaning about the price of the cup game and saying they won't go.

So if there is a boycott for Sunday's game it hasn't been much publicity about it nor any momentum, I have just googled and looked around the internet and can't see much.

If people are moaning about paying £30 to see the cup game, it is going to be a hard task asking them to not attend a game that they have already paid for in a season ticket between £27- £50 ish for.

Such sad news about legendary Dave Watson
at 13:23 18 Nov 2024

Dave Watson was a great player, the most surprising thing about him though was his playing career, up to the age of 24, one season aside he had never played above old 3rd division level, he then joined Sunderlandwhere he played 5 years of 2nd Division football, only coming to prominence in the FA Cup final of 1974

He joined Manchester City and played his first top flight game in August 1975 a couple of months short of his 29th birthday, although he had been given his first England cap a year earlier.

He joined us in October 1979 aged 33 and played this season and then the next, in his 3rd season at the club, he was dropped early in the season and replaced by Malcolm Waldron and then went to Stoke then also a top flight club, he eventually retired from League football where he began at Notts County then in the 2nd Division aged 39, then played non league for a few years.

Only played 73 League games for us and although not at his peak, was still a regular in the England team

Dave Watson was a great player in what was essentially a short time at the club, so perhaps not a club legend as he was at Sunderland & Man City, but a good player just the same.

Is The Journey Better Than The Prize

I agree with most of what you say, but I dont think a team needs 8 £30m players to survive, it needs to be well drilled and organised and have bought 3 or 4 key players.

If you want to do better than 4th from bottom, then yes you need to have 8 £30 million players and then you can compete for the 8th-10th spot, but what do you get for that , if lucky Europa Conference League, if not you spend a lot of money to finish mid table and then eventually you buy £30 m players who are not very good and like us and many clubs before you end up relegated.

The only way forward is for the so called big 7 to depart the Premier League for a European super league.

I will be tucking into Beef on the Big Day, ibve seen enough Turkey shoots this season

Im happy that England won, especially when so many people dropped out, a really good build up for the first goal, Bellingham was unlucky to not get credited with the goal and a superb finish from Curtis Jones for the 3rd.

Perhaps there was an attitude of playing without fear from the players in the squad, they didn't have to please Lee Carsley as he will be gone for Tuchel, so the slate will be wiped clean from next week

Ive been a critic of Pickford, but I agree with you he was good last night and a contender for man of the match in terms of a solid consistent performance throughout the match and a decent save or two thrown in
