You insist that Barbet wanted to go home to France in November 2021.

But you can't find one piece of evidence to support this.

You insist Barbet had offers from English clubs in 2022.

Again you cannot produce one piece of evidence.

If you want to wallow in ignorance then I guess that's your right.

Wallow away.

Arguing against an idiot is like playing chess against a pigeon

You strategically think of all the moves and you have the intelligence to win, but they will just shit on all the pieces and then strut around as if they'd won

"Poor bugger's in Saudi Arabia now"

According to this the average player salary for his club Al Riyadh is €13.2m

Barbet in is on the record in June 2022 saying he wanted to stay - something you keep ignoring.

The same month the club said they had made him an offer which he declined.

If all parties knew as early as November 2021 that Barbet wanted to return to France then the matter could have ended there and the club could have wished him bon voyage when he left and said that was his reason for leaving - they didn't.

You have provided no evidence that Barbet or anyone at the club believed he wanted to return to France.

You also claim (with no evidence) that Barbet had offers from English clubs to stay in this country - which makes no sense.

If Barbet knew in November 2021 that he was going back to France he would have told his agent.

His agent would then have told any English clubs asking about his availability that he was going home and not to waste their time making an offer.

If you can prove all of that is wrong and that Barbet was lying in June 2022 when he said he wanted to stay then go ahead, and I will gladly admit that you were right and I was wrong.

I see now why GaryHaddock said I should save my breath!

My final word on the subject:

1. We don't know what offer the club made or if it was anywhere near Barbet (and his agent's) valuation of his worth.

2. The "return to France" rumour has never been proven to be anything more than a rumour.

3. Barbet himself said after the season ended that he wanted to stay.

So no, I do not see a direct connection between an unsubstantiated rumour in November 2021 and Barbet returning to France in summer 2022.

When Barbet left the BBC reported that he wanted to stay but couldn't agree terms on a new contract:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61716699

The official club line was that he didn't accept the terms he was offered:

https://www.qpr.co.uk/news/club-news/barbet-to-depart-this-summer-070622/

Neither club nor player said anything about a desire to return to France.

There was a mid-season rumour that he wanted to go back to France and it was discussed on here:

https://loftforwords.fansnetwork.co.uk/forum/279275/page:1

But I haven't seen it reported anywhere as fact.

Given that he was Warburton's player and left at the same time as Warbs I'm inclined to believe the club weren't too bothered about keeping him on.

But I might have misremembered and the club just wouldn't pay him what he thought he was worth. Guess we'll never know for sure.

There's a difference between actively looking to get away and being open to a better move if one comes along.

In a later post on this thread I mentioned Yoann Barbet and "loyalty".

My point was that loyalty goes both ways.

Yoann Barbet was very popular and wanted to stay. But he was allowed to walk away.

We don't really know anything about what goes on behind the scenes:

- Maybe the club are desperate to keep Jimmy and he's holding out for the best deal
- Maybe they don't really want him and have made a derisory offer they know he won't accept.
- Maybe there's no offer and they're happy to let him go in the same way Barbet was allowed to walk.
- Or maybe another scenario is playing out. Who knows?

Whatever is going on behind the scenes Jimmy Dunne is continuing to do the business on the pitch. Not playing silly buggers, or playing within himself, or doing a Morgan Whittaker and simply not turning up.

So yes, he can be committed to the club whilst still being open to other offers.

Until he signs on the dotted line, or he already has and the club deigns to tell us, then we have no certainty he will be here next season.

But no one is doubting his commitment on the pitch.

You're right about Sunderland not being there in 88/89, and also about Arsenal's attendances.

Arsenal were averaging 36k that season

https://www.worldfootball.net/attendance/eng-premier-league-1988-1989/1/

QPR were getting 12k

Jimmy Dunne is popular with the fans and been a key player for us this season.

But Yoann Barbet was also a popular and dependable player and we let him walk!

I would be surprised if we didn't make Jimmy some sort of offer. But you never know.

My guess would be that some sort of offer is on the table. But Jimmy's agent would have told him to wait until the end of this transfer window to see if something better comes along.

He's now 27 and coming into his peak years for playing and earning. He will sign for whoever makes the best offer. Loyalty will not be the deciding factor.

Hooliganism was definitely a big factor in declining attendances in the seventies.

But when you look at the data football attendances had been falling steadily since 1945, with a brief increase in attendances following the World Cup win in 1966

You're right.

That's why I took them out of the second table.

Jimmy is seeing far more of the ball per game than anyone else in our squad. But not 50% more, which is what the fbref total statistics for the season were suggesting.

But perhaps the more important stat is that he has played every minute so far this season.

If you calculate the number of touches per 90 minutes then Hevertton and EDB are just ahead of Jimmy, with Lyndon way out in front:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uTMlDWJdFOF2sfTu0BcIa24F1ZvUxNkx5sqoCjjI

If you take a minimum of 4 * 90 minutes then the possession rankings are dominated by our defensive players, with Jimmy top of the pile on just under 67 touches per 90. And he's the only player with more than 60 touches per 90.

And it's slightly surprising to see Smyth and Saito with fewer touches per 90 than Madsen!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19VSkP3ewd6fx5WGk2jrdoMTU1oIt4geD4FlZJnRz

Of our attacking players only Ilias has more than 4 * 90 minutes with an average of over 50 touches per 90. That puts him eighth in our rankings.

Paul Nardi has had the fourth most touches in our squad:

We spent a lot of time pisballing around at the back early in the season.

I'm not one for taking Transfermarkt seriously but they currently have Jimmy Dunne at €3.5m.

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/qprtm/marktwertanalyse/verein/1039

That doesn't take account of how little time remains on his contract.

Nor does it take account of how desperate Sheffield United might be to finish in the top two.

Currently there's a four horse race for automatic promotion. None of those four will want to be in the playoffs. They will all be looking to strengthen in this window, and they will all want to outdo each other.

Given the level Jimmy has been playing at this season £750k would be well below par - in this window, to a keen buyer!

"Jimmy would reluctantly go"

I'm not for one moment doubting Jimmy's commitment to us. But if there is anything in this story then I'm not sure he will be that reluctant to go to Sheffield United.

He's 27, so he's coming into his peak playing and earning years.
He could be looking at PL football and PL money next season.
And he would be in line for a promotion bonus this season.

I don't know how generous promotion bonuses are, but given what's at stake I'm guessing it's a fair wedge.

I hope there's nothing in it and he is still with us next season, but I wouldn't blame him if he did take the chance of moving to one of the promotion favourites.

To be fair, Blackburn have played Leeds, Burnley, and Sunderland since the end of November. That's a much harder run than we've had.
