Fireworks fortnight
at 18:42 1 Nov 2024

Totally different.

The aim of fox hunting is to kill, the bonfire societies take active measures to protect animals. They do a huge amount of publicity on the timings of displays so that pet owners are aware.

The displays are free (apart from fund raising through the year and buckets on the parade route that raise tens of thousands for charity ) meaning many go and don’t feel the need buy their own for home displays.

The fields themselves are always dry and there are security to crack down in street drinking.

II will have a swift half dozen in the pub before. It’s £7.40 for a pint of Guinness in my local mind 😩

Much longer than a fortnight down by me. Lasts about 2 months by the time all the Bonfire Societies have their turn:

I do feel for the animals but it’s a huge tradition in these parts.

I think a lot of people start wearing their poppy a week before.

Had a really hard job getting poppies to sell in work this year. Not really sure of the reasons why, one person said lack of stock and another said lack of volunteers.

I’m more concerned with the fact they’re wrong.

Empire is very prevalent in both Key Stage 3 and 4.

It’s getting very worrying, Cat.

With Trump looking increasingly likely to win in the US, there’s a clear path emerging to trouble ahead.

If there’s one ‘good’ thing to come from this, hopefully any further decisions to go to a similar trial will be made harder after this one was kicked out.

I think it's a huge irony that some who complain obout bias in the mainstream media and election tampering hold this bloke up as a hero.

It would be interesting to see his interpretation.

He’s often held up for the Big Brother thing but he also wrote extensively on the dangers of nationalism.

Kind of makes my point.

Anyone willing to hit kids is unsuitable for the job.

What kind of adult would apply for a job where you have to have a willingness to hit children?

Yet a reasonable percentage ok the uk public are in favour of corporal punishment in schools.

Those for it like to point out it never did them any harm.

My response to that argument is yes it did, it seems to have made you think it’s ok for adults to hit kids.

Since you’ve been in school inspection has been introduced. And Performance Related Pay. And the Teacher Standards. And the Teacher Regulation Authority.

If OFSTED came to my school on Monday and it went badly, I’d be out of a job on Thursday. As I would be out of tea job I’d did many of the things mentioned earlier.

I’m not for one minute saying the public sector is completely full of hard working, competent people. But it’s not the other way either. Same as the private sector.

Those positions are ideological, not factual.

Obviously some takes will be down to experience and Ive had much worse service from mechanics, banks and carpet shops than I’ve ever had from doctors, social workers etc.

Both those examples in your first paragraph would most likely end with dismissal in education.

As would financial mismanagement, gaming attendance or school roll, maladmistration of tests and failure to report a safeguarding concern to name a few.

I’ve no doubt there are some examples of this.

But that’s a long way from all public sector workers being virtually unsackable.

Virtually unsackable?

Not my experience. I’d image all have appraisal and disciplinary policies, HR departments, Codes of Conduct, misconduct and Gross Misconduct red lines etc.

Makes you wonder why we can’t feel these highly paid, gold plated pensioned unsalable positions…
