You think?

I it was okay but I found it fairly boring in most parts. A true reflection of modeen warfare I suppose.

The thing with Band of Brothers is that it is a true story. The main characters are real, the stories are accurate. Easy company were at the sharp end of the D Day landings, the liberation of France, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge and the push towards Berlin. Its an incredible story and I still get a bit emotional with the interviews of the veterans at the start of each episode.

My Uncle John was at D Day - a sub-lieutenant in the RN, in command of an ML (motor launch) carrying a troop of Canadian infantry. We celebrated his 95th birthday last month - he's still going strong!

Back to the subject at hand - but on a very different note - I watched Inspector Montelbano for the first time last night (I was at a loose end) - having seen the name for some time but never been interested enough to actually watch it. The contrast between this amiable series and the majority now showing could hardly be more - ahem - Stark. Almost no violence, just a hint of how's your father, slow-paced and gently humorous, and totally enjoyable for it. But even more so for its Sicilian setting. If you haven't seen it, it's worth it for that alone - a feast for your eyes - I could watch that lyrical landscape for a long time. And also a couple of rather delightful Sicilian women to maintain one's interest....

There's an interesting theory amongst book readers called Heresy which is that the white walkers are good and it's the dragons that are bad. There have been several disasters in the world caused by fire getting out of control and the white walkers have returned to bring about balance between ice and fire - which fits a theme of a few other things (the faceless men were originally slaves of Valeriya who destroyed it because their fire madness had gotten out of control, the incident at Summerhall etc)

I know too much about these flipping books man

I drive my wife mad being a book-bore whilst watching the show

I don't have Sky so I've been watching it on DVD, and reading this thread (cautiously) to decide if its worth buying the next box set.

I've swung to and fro on it tbh - Most of Series 1 niggled me because I thought I was supposed to be rooting for the Starks and they kept being either stupid or hypocritical (or both) - whereas I rather liked Tyrion. Then I came round to the idea that it was supposed to be nuanced - that you had various families, in each some good, some bad, but if you'd been there you'd have to stick with your own side.

Next couple of series I enjoyed, and I liked the way that you couldn't be sure someone was going to live just because they were "good guys." I did feel that some of the violence went beyond trying to be realistic and into the plain old nasty, and while I like naked fit female bodies as much as anyone it didn't quite work for me that gorgeous willing whores are always available for the blokes at a drop of a hat - for a show that was supposed to be brutally realistic there were remarkably few dodgy old brasses turning up to pleasure the troops. (And no clap.)

Now I'm not sure. I liked the nuanced characters but increasingly it seemed as though almost everyone was a complete sh*t, which gets boring, so I'm a bit worried about some of the comments I've seen suggesting that has got worse. Plus medieval European history is my big thing, and while I know this is fantasy Martin's always going on about how he was inspired by the Wars of The Roses and Machiavelli. He's praised for showing realistic power politics in a medieval/fantasy setting, but I don't think he really understands how medieval politics worked. I don't think Queen Cersei or King Joffre would have lasted more than a few months in the real middle ages without someone just sticking a sword into them and dropping them down a well. I don't think he gets how the relations between medieval rulers and their vassals worked, the mutual dependence; he doesn't present anything like the ideologies of chivalry and Christianity that I think people need to inspire loyalty; and for a "realist" he (or at least the TV, not read the books) doesn't show much interest in how all this stuff is paid for or the lives of the ordinary people.

@cider

Most of those are failings of the show rather than Martin - obviously there's a wide spread conspiracy to off Joffrey amongst his own allies in the book and Book Cersei is basically a totally different character. She's so driven by proving herself as a woman she fails to notice she is hopelessly inept (in the books little finger remarks that he's had to advance his plans by several years because he overestimated her competence) and only manages to get back into power when outside forces who benefit from her own brand of insanity remove (well kill) her stabilising blocks. In the books even Jaime has sacked her off (which is why his tv show character is basically an empty vessel now)

^ Book Jamie is *so* much better as an interesting character.

Re the plight of the ordinary folk and their ambivalence about the 'game of thrones', that's also depicted really well in the books via the various places the characters visit travelling around the place. The first three books are basically people moving very slowly around Westeros in the rain.

There are big parts for some ex stars from the adult entertainment industry involved in GOT. Tyrion's squeeze in the early series for example has a very untoward past. I'm surprised she can still sit down these days.

Have you seen Love/Hate Brian? Gillen can't do a Dublin accent despite being from Dublin

I have. Good programme but you're right - his accent there is nonsensical!

Am I the only one who thought last night's episode was going to be the last one ever?

With five minutes to go I was thinking "this director's got a bit of work to do to wrap all this up...".

Ha. Decent episode I thought, so glad at the resolution of the Sansa and Arya stuff. Final series not out until 2019 apparently!

Its usually 10 for these blockbuster types plus they had to get an important shag shown. Not that I'm into midget porn though

When I saw The Fellowship of the Ring I didn't realise it was a trilogy and I was looking at my watch like "Bloody hell lads, it's been 2 and a half hours and they're not even in Mordor yet!"

Lost its teeth a bit this year imo, no real unexpected plot progressions. Too late to bail now though with only 6 more episodes.

I thought it was gripping again. Yes you can see whats coming now but there's bound to be more twists along the way. Still enjoyable very much so.

If Cersei ends up as one of those undead on display in a cage forever I will be happy

It always starts off a bit slow but the build up has been as good as ever, CGI was really good, just a shame to have to wait for so long for the finale chapter.

My mate keeps banging on about waiting for so long between seasons.

The first book was published in 1996 and it looks like GRR Martin is going to DIE before he finishes the series let alone release the next book. I've been waiting YEARS for this next one. He's just jumped on the money train and let the series take over. Not saying it hasn't been entertaining but it has pretty much ruined reading the books for me!

I just re-read the Malazan Book of the Fallen series instead. At least that's a completed storyline!
10 books in 12 years. All close to 1000 pages each and all quality stuff.

Martin has only managed 5 books in 21 years and counting.

I find myself underwhelmed by this season. The 'finale' is yet another episode that's all about setting things up. It's been one long set up so far. Sure, visually it's fantastic, and there are some decent reveals, but it's not gripping. Not for me anyway.

As this thread whet my appetite for Breaking Bad I decided it was time to revisit it (for the third time). The first episode is just brilliant - the kernel of the whole series is contained within it - from the deliciously dark humour, the breathtaking New Mexico landscapes, the quirky camerawork, the seeds and reasons for Walter's incredible transformation, the crazy father/son relationship between Walter and Jesse... If you get the set-up right, everything unfolds from there - and boy do they get it right. Already on episode 3. I know they're completely different genres - but they're still at bottom both dramas - and for all its pomp, epic scale, intense characters, dark comedy and labyrinthine, bloody plot, GoT is not the masterpiece that Breaking Bad is. IMHO of course.
