Dunne, Cook, Fox and Paal are all currently out of contract
Edwards and Ashby are on loan.
That leaves us with Morrison and JCS as starters this season, plus Larchece when he returns but even then, I doubt he will be starting left back.
JCS will cover 10-20 games if the right leaves fall on the tracks and Morrison isn’t exactly injury free.
So you need a new back line of starters/back ups. Not another bunch of the pre-injured, midget tens or utilities.
Never like the utilities in monopoly, certainly don’t think we need them in football these days.

I take all your points, but it's highly unlikely imo that none of the four you mention will re-sign. I suspect we might well retain all four, actually, though I'm starting to worry a bit about Cook. [Post edited 22 Feb 21:10]

He has ability, but had a stinker today. Still not fully attuned to the mixed nature of the demands of this league. Utter hoofball garbage from Pompey today, mixed with aggression and a febrile atmosphere.
They knew we have a soft underbelly and nullified our playmakers accordingly. Varane will have to get used to it or he will soon lose his place in the side. In hindsight, that was a game more suited to Colback. |  | | |

They 'nullified' poor Koki by taking him out with an elbow, splattering his face in blood, and the piece of sh*t who did it should have seen a card the colour of Saito's wounds rather than that of his native ethnicity but saw neither. Cook should have been in the ref's ear from the start, as should our bench. It was gutless, inept, and we deserved exactly what we got. | |

I'm not sure why you think (i) we need a complete summer rebuild, (ii) even if we do, that this implies more 'mediocrity' next season and (iii) why we're going to be challenging for promotion after that. I disgree with you on (i), (ii) does not necessarily follow and (iii) is a matter of speculation.
However, I'd say we are probaby at least four to five quality players away from credible playoff-contenderhood, especially in sub-standard/missing midfield and up top, and even then (and I guess I'm in a minority on this forum), I'm equivocal as to whether Marti is the man to take us to the 'next level'. Hopefully, we can/will jettison Madsen, Ashby, and Varane, and for my money probably Frey and Celar (though I still want to see what, if anything, he produces if/when he comes back from injury, first), which will free up some finance and wages.
I trust Nourry and the board, working closely with the coaching team, to get those decisions right, or mostly right - not least because we have little choice in the matter, but it's likely to be another crucial close season for our recruitment. |
I'll bite.
(I) we have up to 9 of the squad today leaving in May, 6 of which started today.
(Ii) it takes time get them all working as a team. See this season.
(Iii) in 18 months the 18 year olds that have already been purchased for the DS plus the new back line that has to be purchased will be integrated.
We are not 4 or 5 players away from playoffs, loads more. We are 2/3 seasons away.

Just for the record, I'm not judging Varane for his performance today. I haven't been convinced by him from the start - he plays too deep, can't pass (incisively), dawdles on the ball, and gets caught in/turns over possession too often. Playing him and Field together is too much. | |

That would be good news but as things stand, we would need to find a lot of new players and bed them in, which we know takes time and effort as well as considerable funds.
Given that we know we have needed a LB and RB all season and still don’t have anyone other than Ashby as cover, I don’t see the task as straightforward.
And as much as I love Cookie, one more season might be a stretch and we will probably need to Robin Hood his wages. | |

Yes, agree about Colback. I thought we should have brought him on at half time in the hope that he could get us going by getting the ball down on the grass and start us playing through the midfield. We let Pompey play the game their way, physical, aerial and not helped by a Referee who let numerous bad challenges go with no more than a free kick. | | | |
