There’s two things that I enjoy when I think about Salford. The first is something that TOOT would enjoy! At their ground there are several bushes of Pampas Grass and someone from Colchester invariably gets thrown in or dives headlong into the grass much to the chagrin of the Stewards.
The second is their team walk on song. Dirty Old Town. Originally written when Salford was in Lancashire in 1949 by Ewan MacColl and today they play the Pogues version from 1985 with Shane MacGowan on vocals. It is one of the most evocative and atmospheric songs.
Still today we will enjoy the Post Horn Gallop at the JCS.
An element of pride was restored at Chesterfield on Tuesday night. Oscar Thorn was clearly POTM and Jack Payne’s goal gave us a deserved point.
None of this matters however if we cannot start to win our home games. Today Karl Robinson brings his Ammies to North Essex fresh from a victory over Swindon Town. Luke Garbutt will be in the starting line-up. When Garbutt was here at Colchester he looked to have a bright future in the premier league but injuries cost him the opportunity and today at 31 he is content to play in League Two.
Do not forget that today is a 12:30pm kick off and we are live on Sky Sports +
Now these TV games are making me lazy. I am missing Away games because of the ease of watching the Sky Sports televised games. Consequently, I have only been to two Away games so far this season. Although Barrow is lined up in a fortnight.
DC celebrated his 46th birthday with that point against Chesterfield and DC admitted that they were the best team that we have played this season. I wouldn’t disagree except that given their percentage of play and number of shots and corners the fact that that they can’t convert draws into wins at home might ultimately cost them promotion.
Today DC must prepare for life without Samson Tovide for several weeks. Owura Edwards is also injured as is Teddy Bishop. Milton Oni is also out for the season. They are all big losses. Oscar Thorn may be the answer to one of those positions but Lyle Taylor cannot be expected to lead the line all on his own.
DC must also decide on the future of Flanagan and Hunt. Neither of whom have set the league alight.
Also, what is he going to do with Kells who seems to be overlooked at present. And Manny Egbo must surely start ahead of Hunt. Arthur Read is also out of favour but why. The fans love the guy and he scooped all the honours last season.
I suppose that is DC and NC are Managers and I’m not!
Anyway, I think the following starting XI 4,4,2.
Macey
Egbo Goodliffe Donnelly Iandolo
Woodyard McDonnell Payne Read
Thorn Taylor
Subs: Smith Anderson Flanagan Kells Gordon Hunt Hopper
Weather in Colchester will be 14 degrees Celsius, partly sunny dry and a gentle breeze. Perfect for football.
Scoreline 2-0 Colchester with Taylor and Thorn on the scoresheet.
Attendance just over 4,200 with 250 from Salford.
Enjoy the game.
Early start for the Ammies (5:15am), safe journey.

If we can't get points against sides like this we are in for a mighty tough season but think we all knew that after the last few weeks when we have been frankly awful.

Dreadful - no system at all, just hoof and hope. Individually and collectively we should be better than this, and I fear the clock might be ticking on the Cowley experience. Robbie isn't going to finance this level of expenditure to see the U's still battling against relegation. There's still a long way to go, but if we're in the same predicament come December there's going to be changes.

Just not enough quality
Again and again
Awful
I don't like these 12.30 kick-offs. It's bad enough you losing without me forcing myself to watch.
That was so poor though slightly better once the substitutions were made. Lyle Taylor stands out as one player with quality for me but he's thirty-five in March.
Let's hope for better in the cup next weekend against Ian Holloway's Swindon. But of course it's points that really matter.

Stout heart BC, we can still rescue this season by winning the FA Cup.

...and why the f'ck would they take Thorn off?
The chuckle brothers can’t read a game, hence why so many ducked up subs at funny times… wrong players being pulled off at wrong times…. They’re finished the race is run. Let’s hope Robbie is hunting for a young manager that wants to play a bit of football…
The brothers heart may be in the rite place but they’re shocking. They don’t make the players any better. Their job is to coach players to make them better…. Robbie takes a lot of flack but it’s time the chuckle brothers took it….
We can’t win a game and it’s dull as dishwater… but long as the bothers praise the fans and clap them before and after the game what more do we want?

Defence was doing well cutting the box getting across the box , then fall asleep with high wide ball. Two wide men off for the experience of Scully and Anderson. A ball from the byline by Egbo creates the goal, (is that a surprise ) . However Egbo assist cancelled out by deflection of shot which flat foots Macey. Did nowhere enough to win this game, and the hard earnt point midweek is yet again not backed up with a home win. Same mistakes every week, never learnt. Sign of madness . Or is that me thinking this season was going to be better !

Post match interview DC states how the injury list has affected team performance.
Only big loss is Edward’s providing down the left , or perhaps could play Matt Jay, oh who ?
To be fair to DC he can’t really say I’m a clueless creep that has to lick ass to the fans to keep a job as I have no more idea than a under 15 Saturday kids football coach… it’s going to be the ref or injures….
We don’t even have a system or pattern of play or identity. So 1/2 blokes being injured is rubbish.

I agree there is no clear sense of identity. For me, the biggest worry is the midfield, which has gone missing recently. Their number 6 often had acres of space. And the second big worry is the defence - it's not good enough to defend well for 95% of the game and then give away soft goals. And yes it's true that today's winner was yet another deflection, but that happens when we get into a mess and are having to make last ditch tackles - that's when deflections occur!

I think he mentioned it in his pre-match interview as well. Not a good look. And of course other sides are completely injury free 😉
We have the same refs and same possibility of injures as anyone… also all these players we keep selling go onto higher level clubs… yet DC couldn’t get a tune out of them….

Desperate Dan:- "the academy should be proud" (of Oscar)
Which one? Arsenal or Norwich academy? Because he was an adult when he signed for the U's and he's spent most of his time on loan at Bath and Chelmsford, so why should the failure factory be proud? I doubt they know his name.

He was that good he would never of seen the first team if we didn’t have a few injuries…. Danny and the team wouldn’t know what a good player was if they jabbed him on the hooter.

Problem is if the Cowleys go, who would come in to replace them.
The situation is really desperate now.
Yes we are missing Tovide, Edwards, Bishop and Oni but all clubs suffer injuries.
My principal concern is our inability to string a series of passes together.
Today was awful but so was last week at home to Cheltenham.
10 home wins in 41 home games tells it's own story.
So disappointed tonight.
Why do we take our best players off like Oscar Thorn. Having made the bold selection give him 90 minutes.
Manny Egbo must start.
Not much else to say tonight. We deserve better than this though.
Yes this a problem for Robbie … a big problem. We needed an Ian Holloway type. Just to steady the ship and get the players playing ( if he would take it )
I think we can establish now that the tone with the DC and NC is set…. Just set out for a draw so we can talk crap after the game about how hard we thought and how good the other team was… if we stay up will just be pot luck 2 worse teams are kicking about.
In an ideal world you would like a younger manager with a bit of footballing nouse and just say this is a project. You’re stage one… run with it and see how far we go.
The club was in a pickle before the chuckle brothers took over so this isn’t something that you can pin down to them. They’re just not good enough to solve it or change it. On the face of things this should be well within their grasp.
Has it come a point where the club has a re structure ethos and mind sets change and what ever comes of it ( relegation or promotion so be it )
Is it now a case knock it down and rebuild on your own terms before someone else sends the bulldozers in.
