Labour councillor arrested for encouraging murder during UK riots on 20:47 - Aug 8 by KeithHaynes | There’s a few idiots trying to amend the football offences act to ban people who have been convicted of offences relating to this current situation. Our boy Ricky is a fan of Gillingham. Goose and gander time ? |
I’m all in favour of dishing out some pretty substantial sentences to the skanks who’re involved in the bother whether they are right wing or left wing, but I think the attempts to change the laws to ban the guilty from football matches is completely wrong. Unless an offence is directly linked to football, then the banning orders etc shouldn’t apply. If an individual club wants to ban a supporter convicted of violent disorder committed during the current troubles then as far as I am concerned that’s a matter for the particular club.

Labour councillor arrested for encouraging murder during UK riots on 20:10 - Aug 8 by majorraglan | Who on the left has said it ok? Behaviour like this is never acceptable from anyone. The guy should be forced out of office, booted out of the Labour Party (if that’s who he represents) and prosecuted. End of. |
Yep. Suspend him, investigate him and then kick him out of the party. ...and a six a.m. knock on the door.

In that instance she would be arrested for having a detonator and/or a bomb, not for clapping. 😂

We’ve got an independent judiciary in the UK, it’ll be down to the magistrates and judges as to what he gets when he’s sentenced. These 2 counter protestors have just had porridge served up to them after being involved in disorder with white guys wearing Union Jack flag and masks. Good enough for them and anyone else involved in the disorder. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/08/09/counter-protesters-jailed-after-atta [Post edited 9 Aug 17:34]

The cases so far have deserved what they got, but I did wonder about the independence of the judiciary aspect when such a strong steer came from the PM. The older man from Southport with no previous convictions who handed himself in and pleaded guilty would probably have escaped with a lighter sentence without that context (not that he didn't deserve porridge). I think they will have to be pretty hard on Jones to escape the allegation of "two tier" justice, although I suppose the "words not actions" aspect will come into the sentencing calculation. We'll see.

Strange how they got the ‘far right’ offenders into court and sentenced in days yet this guy has to wait until September. However, he is in custody so that’s a good thing.

He will be allowed to take some more legal advice and no doubt will employ better than average lawyers. He will appear in court again at which point he will be asked to plead and if it’s ‘not guilty’ you can expect him to be bailed or possibly remanded, if he is to be treated like everyone else. A person with legal backing in his situation will rely on his chances at trial. If he is found guilty in Crown he will most certainly go to jail. If he pleads I think he will get away with a sentence, possibly suspended. Although if that happens the loonies may well be out again. And I don’t blame them regardless of my opinion on both sides. Tough times for the idiot, how he thought he would get away with it god only knows. Just my opinion btw mate.

Why is it a carve up? The guy has been arrested, charged and then denied bail (like the other suspects who’ve been Charged with similar offences) and held in police Custody to appear at Court. He’s then appeared in Court, not entered a plea and been remanded in Custody for a month. Whatever happened in the Magistartes Court, this case was always going to end up in Crown Court. If he’d entered a not guilty plea the case would be transferred to the Crown Court for trial, if he’d entered a guilty plea it would be transferred to the Crown Court for sentencing because Magistrates can only hand out 6 months imprisonment which is inappropriate given the nature of the offence. As Kieth has said, the month he spends in Custody will allow the police sufficient time to collate all the evidence, prepare the disclosures and upgrade the initial remand file to a full file containing all the evidence so the CPS can progress the prosecution and provide the defence with copies of the file.
