Weellll... there was a lot of complaints about him, and JFH was ridiculed on a podcast for saying he was our best player and so he builds the side around him. In that, JFH was correct., but Chery was continually blamed by fans for our strikers not finishing the chances he created, and in turn ridiculed for going to China, and seen as not really that great.
Then he played Champions League football to join the growing band of players many of our fans believe weren't 'good enough' but went on to do well elsewhere or even just have solid careers in the championship. |
Hmmm OK I don't really recall that - certainly Polter and Sylla got more negativity for their perceived limitations. |  |

Absolutely this.
Scorned, derided, mocked. Yet his goals to games ratio was in the region of 3.5. Very good, when you consider about 54% of his appearances were from the bench. Started 28 games, substitute appearances: 33 games. Goals scored 17.

Frank was close to being the perfect partner for Rodney. I still feel that it was due to Clarke being injured that Chelsea won so comfortably in the FA Cup 6th round.

Andy Impey, now an assistant Development Squad coach. He was understandably often in the shadow of Trevor Sinclair, who played on the opposite side, but was a great winger for us. I loved seeing him and Sinclair destroy opposition full backs then switch wings and both do the same on the other side. |

Bradley Allen springs to mind for me. A great little striker who was always in the shadow of Ferdinand.
Also agree with an earlier comment on Marcus Bignott. Did a lot of donkey work for team with no fuss and could be quite skillful at times. |  |

In my view, a common misconception that arose long after the time. Maybe to try and big up his (dubious) managerial skills and profile. I certainly don't remember many R's fans at the time thinking that Holloway was of any use.
When Barker - good player, but hardly a world beater - was alongside Super Ray instead of Holloway we were a million times better. And so was Wilkins. "Was Wilkins' legs" - I'm sorry, I must have missed it at the time.

I’ll agree I gave him stick for not having technical ability but, when not playing you totally appreciated what he brought to the party.

Nope, Holloway was vastly underrated as stated, covered all the ground. Even Frank McLintock raved about him on MOTD once.
However I do agree that Barker was better and might have got an England call up if he hadn’t picked up that bad injury.
