vs Gateshead - match thread on 23:53 - Oct 24 with 2584 views | Daley_Lama | Gateshead were fantastic tonight from the off. They had a wide man either side hugging the touchline and Dale could not cope with that for starters. Then they were excellent at passing and moving, cutting us open again and again. They were inventive from free-kicks and corners and as mentioned above, left 2 up front when defending corners - compared to our usual 0. 2-0 totally flattered us, 2-2 was a relief. They were far better than us coordinated and ran rings around us especially the second half. Nothing was done to counter. No formation change as they streamed through our left hand side time and again. We were not bad, they were very good. Even their kick offs after we scored were positive, not laid back to our keeper every single time to hoof it up every single time. Whoever came up with this (other teams do it too) wants locking in a dark room and made to watch Mrs Brown’s Boys on a loop for eternity.

It’s staggering this was overlooked by some when results were going our way and, with that, all important time was allowed to pass. There has never been any excuse for not looking to address the concerns of those looking for clarity. It’s a shame that’s been brought further into focus by a winless run and an all too predictable loss of numbers within the squad. We look forward to knowing where we stand.

Still cant win at home! Agree that Gateshead looked a good side with a threat in their attack but not that great at the back. They are an attractive attacking team with huge work rate compared to our squad who looked knackered after 45 minutes. BJ needs to respond tactically during games to the way that other teams are playing. Louie will be disappointed with their second goal. Hendo will also be disappointed with his chances but it would have been a travesty had we won. Given our injuries some of the younger players will need to be given a chance sooner rather than later. Unfortunately looks like mid table obscurity rather than a play off place at the moment.

Im not a coach so I dont know but what is the best way of countering the 2 wide men because basically they had 2 outlets all evening just stood with no Rochdale players within 10 metres of them? I would have thought our 2 fullbacks should have got closer to them for a start?

It's only a massive threat when they've got the ball, it's an opening while we're in possession too if they're staying so wide, or at least it should be if you've got a manager with a bit of in game awareness he can use the space to our advantage, rather than worry about what they're going to do next.

As for the question of countering the wide threats, the best thing to do would’ve been to set up with a back 5 and 2 advanced wing backs going toe-to-toe with them, but again this isn’t possible with the lack of numbers at the moment.

A mid table finish wouldn't represent obscurity, it would represent a very good effort from a rookie manager and a small squad of players, recruited during a financial crisis at the club. It would be something that I would view as a decent achievement by everybody involved. To expect to finish in a play off position is not understanding what's playing out off the pitch and up in the Boardroom. There's no excuse for fans not knowing because supporters are trying to flush out any information that they can glean to the best of their ability and stuff has been circulated on social media , but many choose to ignore the severity of the current situation. Having said that it's like drawing teeth getting information out of the Boardroom, the complete opposite of what you would expect from a fan owned club with five hundred shareholders. You would think it impossible that fans are ostracised at a fan owned club and treated like outsiders, but it's been like that since the MH share buy back. The fact that it's now seen as the norm and accepted by most is a sad reflection on not only the fan base but also those in the Boardroom. A Chairman is responsible for bringing everything and everybody together at a football club, showing leadership and making it feel inclusive, embracing the supporters and the local community, promoting everything that's good about the club. Nobody can deny though that we've seen the opposite of that but nobody seems to hold him to account. The Club has lacked proper leadership for a long time unfortunately. Nail on the head TS. To criticise Jim McNulty working with two hands and one leg tied behind his back is almost to ignore what a bad job this board have done since the MH saga. They'll bring up excuses about the economy, a disengaged public, etc. but how did they not foresee those kinds of issues like the rest of us did when they went out and spent money on James Ball, Luke Charman and Tahvon Campbell? Or when they gave a manager who'd just been sacked by a club from two divisions below a two year deal? What have they done to re-engage that public? This is a mess of their making compounded by their footballing decisions and the longer we sit and wait for that perfect, benevelont investor to decide out of the blue to invest in us for no real reason above anyone else, the closer we get to accepting an offer from a Stewart Day/Steve Dale type character. I feel so angry and stupid that I stood in the Main Stand shaking a bucket shouting "Up the Dale, Not for Sale" less than 2 years ago. What for? So we could be a bog standard National League outfit desperately floundering with a threadbare squad praying to be sold. The knight in shining armour doesn't exist, that much is clear. There are clubs that are performing better under proper fan ownership than we are under this lot and we have to start making big strides towards making that our reality ASAP before it's too late.

Yes, they will now see it as a hinderence to attracting investors. I see it as five hundred life long supporters who collectively have invested far more than those in the Boardroom over decades and decades of support, probably passed on from their family members before them. I see David Clough peddling his bike in all weathers , leaving his estate to buy shares and save the club I don't think Simon Gauge even considers things like that, there's more to investment than money. Most of those 500 investors have invested all their life's into this club, something that the Chairman will never be able to understand which is a shame. Some people have so much money they don't know how poor they are..if it doesn't involve money they aren't interested in communicating about other things and lose sight of the things that really matter.

Supporters are frustrated and upset that we’re now in this position. The Trust should be in no doubt they have to represent this now and make a concerted effort to provide clarity and some sort of reassurance. If the latter is possible. Attempts to change the narrative are obvious, but carry no weight.

There are clubs in this league operating on a part time basis without a rich sugar daddy. Clubs that are attracting a third of our home attendances. These clubs will have leadership and direction from the top and everybody will be fully invested in running the club to the best of their ability..fully focused on running the club and improving it. Their sole priority won't be in finding a investor and off loading their club. If they can do it then why can't we? The answer lies in the need for those in the Boardroom to recoup their outlay, perfectly understandable, but the reason why this fan owned club has never been given a chance since the moment the shares were bought back. The priority immediately shifted overnight and that's still the priority. Football isn't broken, that's a mantra that some use as a convenient excuse [Post edited 25 Oct 2023 10:44]

Re your first paragraph Sutty, I’m afraid I couldn’t disagree more. Our attendances at this level are more than decent (Chesterfield & Oldham aside), & we have facilities at the stadium most teams in this league can only dream of. What is the commercial side of the club going to maximise this asset? It never ceases to depress me that the club has so meekly accepted a spiral of decline with barely a murmur. I agree we are all to blame to a certain extent but the lack of urgency & action from those in charge on & off the pitch at the club is bordering on criminal. On last nights game, I can live with drawing or losing at home by teams that are obviously better than us but fitter?? That’s a huge worry & for me totally unacceptable. Our home record is a joke but should the board decide on a change of management I’m afraid I have no confidence whatsoever that they can pick a winner based on the last 2-3 appointments. I have to say though that the fans who have turned up to watch this unfolding sh!Tshow deserve great credit for putting their hard earned cash into the club for basically nowt. I fear administration & a points deduction sooner rather than later.

I admit my priority over the last few years is aimed more towards the off field performances than what's happening on it. To be honest, I've lowered my expectations when it comes to league positions and i dont think that will change until the clubs fully functioning again. Everything that happens behind the scenes impacts what happens out on the pitch so it's not difficult for me to cut the manager and players some slack if they are putting a shift in..and they are. I feel for them if anything. We've only used 19 players this season, and that includes the likes of Rodney who has only been fit enough to come off the bench twice, Hayes who's only been here a couple of weeks, McDermott and Afuye who clearly aren't considered good enough and now the likes of John, Ferguson and Sinclair who aren't available. We're asking players to play too much football. I know it's easy to say "they're professional footballers they should be able to cope" but when other teams are able to rest players when they need it or sub them off after 60 minutes occasionally, it leaves us at a huge disadvantage. We're asking 38 year olds and 17 year olds to play almost every minute of almost every game and then wondering why we're looking a bit leggy.
