Film review show to finish on 5 live after 21 years. They'll be missed. Kermode is not to some people's liking but he's a character and loves a good rant. Not really a film buff myself but always worth a listen for the chemistry between the two. April 1st is the last show. I think.

You can't beat a Kermodian rant. I stopped listening a couple of years ago...partly because I got bored and partly because I was unlikely to see a lot of the films they were talking about.

Yeh it was tough going in lockdown I found and I kind of drifted away. The fact the movie industry is so utterly dominated by tedious super hero franchises also doesn't help, but one of the great things about the show is they go out of their way to give time and and draw attention to All The Other Stuff - much smaller, independent films, docs, foreign language etc.
I do occasionally find the podcast a little bit toooo much, if you know what I mean? A bit rich (a lot rich) coming from me and the way I write but heading off on tangents about the origins of words and who played guitar for who in the 1970s and who's sitting where in the church or on the cruise, does occasionally have me muttering "get on with it" on my run. Still listen just about every week mind.
I don't know, there's something about radio. You kind of invite these people to come and sit with you in your car. They've sat with me in mine during some really tough points. Pre-podcast I used to always make sure if I had a journey to do I did it during their show because it's just so comforting knowing they're here for the next couple of hours and you're going to enjoy it.
"Alright, so..."

They've been moved about for the last few years and it felt like the writing was on the wall over lockdown.
They'll move to Scala, Greatest Hits, or some other platform and carry plenty of listeners with them. More people listen via the podcast than the radio AFAIK.
Kermode had / has a fair bit to do with a cinema in Truro (may be local to him imsuppose), and does presentations and talks on films there, lauding the cinema (an old school one) as a bastion of elegance etc.
However if you visit the said cinema, they are up their own asses , with awful soundproofing (6 screens), noisy staff, a so so foyer, etc. To me it seems like Kermode's pretentiousness had rubbed off on the whole building and staff.
Mind you the guys and girls that stand in for those too are of the same mold too!
Mayo did say during the announcement of their departure that the BBC had better things to spend Thier money on but it was by mutual consent. You can read into that what you want. There is a drive at the station for Younger presenters which means that being 60 odd doesnt fit the remit. Rik Edwards is now on breakfast and he's a decent broadcaster and quiet likeable. The same can't be said for afternoon presenter, Nihal Arthanike who is an insufferable, vain, bore. Spurs fan apparently and Christ does he like to let it be known.

Couldn't agree more... can't stand the bloke. Literally the only presenter who actually makes me turn 5 Live off. Warming to Rik Edwards after a bit of a slow start

Used to enjoy this show immensely. I am not a film enthusiast and I positively dislike the cinema experience. (I've probably been < 6 times in the last 25 years!)
But their knowledge and inter-play was so good it didn't matter. However, I do think it became a bit staid, as most things will eventually (For whatever reason.)
I lost interest a couple of years ago when they were reviewing the 'new' Mary Poppins film and comparing to the 'masterpiece' they considered the original. Really? I saw it when I was a kid and thought it Ok - but as an adult! Chim-Chiminey my arse.

We did get the Dan shittu song out Of Mary poppins mind. Have to say my favourite presenter is Tony Livesy who does the drive show. He's come along way since he was editor of the Daily sport.

Nihal does at least prepare very well for his interviews. Like reading the book or listening to the record first, for example. The R5Live presenter who I really can not listen to is Naga Munchetty, who gives a very good impression of reading the script for the first time - presumably because she has come straight from the BBC Breakfast TV studio and can't be arsed to find out who she's going to be talking to.

Couldn't disagree with this more. Nihal is a great presenter, he' has some superb well reseached guests - read some great books as a result of listening to them.
Nihal also knows his music, was a good promoter of gigs as well back in the day. Top bloke.

Each to thier own I suppose. I will agree that he can be a good interviewer and he does do his research but best interviewers make about it the interviewee and not themselves which when Simon Mayo had the same gig did brilliantly. I'm in my late fifties so maybe I'm not down with the kids. Probably was a bit harsh and best to say he's not my cup of tea!

Naga Munchetty KMN
Has to be the worst broadcaster ever
Campare and contrast to Danny Baker she fits a profile I guess
Loved the way she called Nicky Campbell Nicky Clarke on handover on her first day
She is painful to listen to it’s worse than pulling teeth
I know almost nothing about the Premier League even though I try to catch the big games every now and then at the end of the season. But I will say this, Queens Park Rangers is just a fukking sick ass team name. Just sounds so cool.
