Not looking good. Can’t be much fun worrying that you are going wake up with Russian tanks rumbling down the street. Also worrying that Putin had been talking about the nuclear threat. How do we let these nut jobs anywhere near power? Surely the Russian people are no different to us and just want to get on with their lives peacefully?

I have it on good authority that they are being mobilised to sort out a few wheelie bins that have gone over so best to be safe and deploy the military.

Apparently there was a darts match between The Roebuck and The Saxon , can get tasty that fixture.

The Princess Von Leyen,
“The EU and its partners will react with unity, firmness and determination in solidarity with Ukraine.”

Right, so lets see a bit more than the petty snarling and snapping that they showed towards GB in the past two years. I somehow doubt it. The EU gets 40% of its power from Russia. Germany is Russia's poodle. They won't even muster the recent preening and posing of anti GB Macron, whose nose is already stuck between Putin's buttocks, with his tongue even further inserted.

I don’t think that communism has much to do with Putin and his agenda.
And here in the UK as we prepare to bring in measures to bring Putin to his knees, our PM replied in Parliament that Abramovitch hasn’t been sanctioned because he already is being sanctioned. The thing is, he isn’t and the PM has now “misspoke” apparently. Little wonder Putin does what he likes when he likes.

Do you think if Abramovic was / is being sanctioned, Putin would back off?

Our response is futile so far and not much more than a slap in the face that Russia will laugh at. Our response is marginally better than the EU but that is not difficult. Whether you are pro or anti EU one thing the EU has consistently been bad at is unity in the face of an international crisis - you only need look at the Balkan crisis - right on its doorstep but it was the US and Uk that largely forced some sort of peace there and defended the rights of Bosnian muslims against Serb aggression and plans for a greater Serbia (interestingly an historically close ally of Russia).

If we wanted to send a clear message a temporary break in diplomatic relations with Russia with withdrawal of our diplomatic staff from Moscow and the sending back of Russian diplomatic legation to Moscow and reducing trading in line with international law etc.

But, the point is we all stood back and allowed Crimea to be annexed and the Russian incursions into Donetsk and Lukhansk without much more than a murmiur. This on the back of incursions into Georgia and South Ossetia and even in the Baltic states qne the partial annexation of Transnistria in Moldova by Russian forces. It is a domino effect, bit by bit, testing when or if the west will ever respond with meaningful means. So far we haven't and we have repeated the appeasement policy similar to that before 1939.

UK to be fair are making more noise than most but on our own we can't do much but there is no real appetite in the west of Europe as they only care when they themselves are threatened and then expect others to help get them out of the hole.that they have failed to deal with in the first place.

I am afraid it won't end here. It may take years and years but slowly and gradually Russia under Putin will be a serious threat to its neighbours and beyond.

Just a reminder of what has been going on, and not in The Guardian so no excuses not to read the article.

As someone who has visited Russia in recent years, I can assure you Russia is n no way a communist state.

What they do have is a Dangerous Dictator, someone who eliminates any opposition in his own country, and through his oligarchs and other means bought his way to influencing other countries stance against him, hence the pathetic sanctions we imposed on them yesterday

You can't like the opposition or you risk getting poisoned. You can't be gay or you get beat up. Parts of the media censored to make the Russians think Putin is king, racism is rife. The population is controlled, coerced and forced, a bit like China. It sounds f@cking communist to me.

The country is run by a psychotic nutcase..he won't listen to outside influences and is dying..he wants to flex his might and he will go totally unchallenged...the Financial support he has forwarded is totally irrelevant to current proceedings...and I have no doubt that he would push the button for a nuclear war...none whatsoever.

its sounds like more like in Argentina in the70's, Chile in the 70's & 80's or Uganda under Idi Amin to me, none of which were communist.

Good old Maggie was great mates with the evil General Pinochet, where thousands disappeared whilst he was in charge

Dictators, be they of Communist or Fascist states are bad full stop

The definition of communism has nothing to do with despots or dictators or extreme behaviour. It is a way of living that levels out peoples needs with what they receive. The word has become pejorative but it’s something that has largely been misused by those with alternative agendas.

Are there any communist countries that haven't regressed into dictatorship?
