Has the Swansea model collapsed? 14:36 - Jul 28 with 2869 views | ReslovenSwan1 | Roberts being injured is bad news. Roberts being injured and out of contract next Summer is terrible news. Swansea's 'modus operandi ' has been to sell players at high prices and buy them at low prices. Bony Sigurdson etc . Swansea struggled when the club ventured into high price players Borja, Clucas and Sanches. In the championship Swansea got good money for jewels from the underage group. McBurnie, James and Rodon. £50m+? Sadly for Swansea the PLAYER SALE MARKET HAS COLLAPSED and this model is failing. Grimes £5m is not good and they will no get much for Roberts either. The club must their simply make a small profit and keep good young players under contract for longer. The likes of Benda, Brandon Cooper and Garrick could stay longer and not get picked off if they do well. Adapt to the conditions or pay a heavy price.

Swansea model was to sell some players e.g. Rodon to pay for Ayew s wages and for decent deals for players to sign long term deals. Offers for Grimes and Roberts were not acceptable. If Swansea cannot get decent prices for its star players it will not be able to pay its up and coming talents. The market appears to have crashed. £11m for Rodon is starting to look like a very good piece of business.

Just look at the transfer spend of clubs outside the Premier League. Its very hard to commit on spending, be it transfers or new contracts if you have no guaranteed income.

Has the Swansea model collapsed? on 15:16 - Jul 28 with 2077 views | Badlands | In the last two years we have paid for youth loans and their clubs have sold them for inflated prices. If you were to take a look at the players we had who could have generated a profit last season only Cabango looks like a valuable asset. Roberts will be 26 soon and his high value transfer is not gong to happen. He was very hit and miss for two seasons and success depended on other teams letting us have time and space for wing backs. Benda. Garrick, Cooper and Lewis could be very good but Cooper was more interested in keeping our loan players happy than developing our youngsters.

Has the Swansea model collapsed? on 15:19 - Jul 28 with 2062 views | vetchonian | Did we have a model? We did well with sales of Dan James and McBurnie, made some money from Rodon, Bony and Siggi were not "cheap" acquisitions by club standards I do rememebr HJ baulking at the £12M paid and making statements about this not becoming the norm. We made lots of money from COmpensation and transfer fees when Martinez ,co and Jason Scotland and the Brendan and Joey went More disappointing for me is that we never did actually develop a model. We developed the acacdamy but for the so called "Swansea Way" of playing which relied heavily on Leon we never actually developed any players to fill the hole he left. The vision started by MArtinez in which he got the youth and first teams mixing, then a club philosophy of developing the acadamy sides to play in a certain style tat as per the first team developing the players to do so as they progressed yet we failed to develop another Leon type... and how many of our "homegrown" players have we retained and signed on pro contracts? This failure can be put down to the sellouts as they should have identified this as the model to sustain the club and its survival in the PL not becoming "just any other club" by attempting to but success. The keeping of good young players under contract is a nice sentiment but with greedy agents they will always be looking for the best deal....Before our PL success we had a wage strucutre which got blown apart once we got to the PL, and especially when we started signing so called "free " transfers such as Gomis where their wagres were loaded in lieu of a transfer fee. The principle of retaining our good young players is sound but once they get noticed and higher clubs start sniffing around the lure of more lucre ( for the agent...and maybe the player ) and the chance of playing at a higher level will be tempting. You are right in your last sentance..and unfortuneately the man you keep lauding as our most succesful chairman didnt...He failed to develop a strategy which could have delivered on going success....whilst we as fans enjoyed the years at the top table and he enjoyed the riches which came with it he lacked the nous to truly develop a model to ensure sustainability....rather he reverted to the Modus Operandi of every other club

Benda got injured, let it go man Cooper has gone Roberts was unlikely to go his "weakness" as a defender has been much discussed on here his strength is palying in a back 5 not a back four...Im sure most PL clubs would have comne knocking before...dont forget he did have a seson in the PL how long ago was that? Last season which loanees kept Garrick and Cooper out of contention?

Interesting that you only refer to loan signings associated with Cooper and not the likes of. Morris and Arriola who played in Very similar positions to the likes of Garrick, Whittaker and O Cooper. In fact Garrick was farmed out to Swindon on the day Arriola joined seemingly to make room for him.

The sellers devised not one but two successful models to keep Swansea in the higher echelons of English system. The US owners inherited the second one. a) General trading. Buying mature players cheap and selling art an high price. e.g. Sigurdson, Shelvey, Cork. £65M+ b) Trading young prospects. McBurnie, James., Rodon £45m+ Trading mature players of quality has become very difficult Grimes £4m? Roberts £3m? Brandon Cooper, Benda, Garrick, Joseph are talented players. Thank the sellers for them also. It will not be easy to get big money for them in this market even if the play brilliantly. Fans are owner whatever happens to the club they are partly responsible for. Every one likes to dodge responsibility when times are tough and blame somebody else. Take a look around the club. It is perfect for Swansea. External factors are well out of the control of the sellers. They did a solid years service.

What input did the sellouts have in signing Joseph then? Who joined 4/5 years after they sold out? [Post edited 28 Jul 2021 16:20]

The sellers built a club and infrastructure that is / was on paper sustainable. This would be sustainable either by straight forward player trading. Buying mature players low and selling high. Shelvey, Sigurdson, Cork. This is possible in the premier league. Selling mature players in the Championship is not so easy as we see with Grimes and Roberts. The second model was in place for the championship and also devised by the sellers using Landore and Fairwood facilities to produce young imported player McBurnie and James, or actually Welsh lads like Cabango and Rodon. Joseph has come into a team that " has a pathway to the first team" (and beyond). This was sold to him hard and is part of the model set up by the sellers and incorporated by both Birch and Winter and approved of by the US owners and presumably the SCST. Morgan / Jenkins are still shareholders. I do not know what influence they still have at the club. Swansea's model includes income from Premier league clubs to pay the wages of the first team squad.
