Detached Retina 08:57 - Feb 12 with 1981 viewsWokingR

Got an emergency appointment later this morning for a suspected detached retina.
Anyone on here got any experience of this or advice ?

My ex detached both retinas when she was drunk and walked out in front of a car.

Had operations on both (separately) - all pretty straight forward and no adverse effects..

Good luck with the appointment.

I had this a few years ago Woking.
I went into Mayday hospital in Croydon to see the specialist and I was on the train to Moorfields within an hour. I had the op and everything was fine. What you will also find is that as a result of the op you will get a cataract within a year but that is a very simple operation.
Good luck with it all mate.

I got a detached retina about 25 years ago. Went to West Middlesex for a consult. On leaving a nurse took me to one side and whispered 'did I know that I could choose where to be treated'.

It immediately clicked - Go to Moorfields.

So. Go to Moorfields. In and out in a day. Very scary at the time but vision restored.

Just back
It's a detached gel sack rather than retina so reasonably good news and should heal itself over next 6-18 months. Just got this floppy lump floating around inside that I've got to try and get used to now.
Thanks for all your tips and advice.

That is very good news mate. Any idea how you did it?

Funnily enough after having a detached retina myself I had what I thought was another one in the other eye before Christmas but the opticians couldn't see anything wrong and I just have what seems to be a permanent floater. Is that what yours is like?

Yes, apparently floaters are caused by the gel sack drying out as you get older and bits coming off. Mine has just come off in one go. Have the flashing white lights which they say will take about 3 months to heal and then the rest should sort itself out

Yes, Mrs Hants has had this twice, short-sighted people are more susceptible it would appear. Some wonderful surgery by Southampton eye hospital. Could probably talk at length about it but the earlier it is identified, the better. After the last, quite complex operation she had to lie with head down for almost a week -10 min breaks permitted which we achieved by lying face down on an aircraft-style neck support cushion.

Hope everything goes well for you mate
