If you sold 50k of tickets but no one turned up for the match, Does that mean you still have an attendance of 50k?

Your club could have had a long term plan and bought properties around the stadium. It would have taken a while : just like at Liverpool, but you could of then switched the stadium 90 deg around or slightly rotated to be in line with the roads.

It would have taken time, and planning and effort, but your club took the easy option and went for the flat-pack. Terrible decision in reality.

So you obviously never went to The Dell or have been anywhere near Liverpool 4. Unlike Anfield, the old Dell site was impossible to redevelop, a look at Google Earth or any map would illustrate that. But even if it could, I was struggling to think of how someone even as stupid as you could think that a club of Saints' limited resources could possibly have had enough money or political clout to buy up rows of houses and flats, knock down a church and persuade Soton City Council to re-route a major road. But then I remembered that it was you lot who actually believed that you could get the Royal Navy to move one of the nation's most historic warships a couple of hundred yards in order to build the most fanciful and unfeasible stadium in the history of football. Let's face it, you were stopped from building at Farlington by a few geese, how did you mugs think you were going to get round the bloody Navy? Still, the artist's impressions gave us all a laugh. I particularly liked the little door for the ferry to sail in. Cute.

Liverpool were able to build their ‘big stand’ and develop The Tin Mine because they strategically ruined the area around the ground and compulsory purchase a load of house before knocking them down. Not that it would get much coverage in the media who won’t have a word said against FC Dignity and Class. This clip is good though...

Pains me to say this, but i totally agree. I fcuking hate St. Marys and some of the mongs that now trot along with their 'can i have your shirt Prowsey' placards.

That said, hindsight is a wonderful thing as i was quite excited at the prospect of moving to a ground with some modern bogs.
[Post edited 9 Apr 2020 19:41]

That’s got nothing to do with modern stadiums that’s just prem crowds in general . If we were still playing at the Dell you’d get those stupid placards etc , things have moved on for the worst unfortunately

Before they built the Centenary Stand wasn't there one little old lady who refused to move? I wonder what happened to her. I know Spurs had a similar problem with one business who wouldn't budge, but there was a mysterious fire (allegedly). Did Everton never consider buying up some neighbouring property? If any historic old English stadium should be preserved it should probably be Goodison. I guess, like The Dell, the church might have been an issue?

It would be intresting tosee how much Liverpool spent building a bigger Anfield against the cost of building a new Stadium and flogging Anfield for housing.

Our crazy Pompey friend on here reckons Saints could have afforded to buy up all the properties around The Dell, turn the pitch round and build 4 new stands.

Yes it might hve been possible but there no way Saints could have finaced it.

I'm no expert but i would have thought it would have cost far more then it cost to move.

I think all Saints fans would have liked to have stayed at the Dell and increse the capacity to 30,000 if it was a opition - it wasn't

You clearly know nothing of the stadium demographics.

He was basically suggesting that we should retain the character of the ground by knocking all the stands down and starting again. Of course, we shouldn't forget that it was one of his fellow PFC fans (or maybe even him) who once declared that Pompey were planning to rotate their pitch 180 degrees. Priceless.

This is a bit like the ‘save the Saints’ game, thinking you couldn’t do it. No, you can’t move a well used church, but you could have bought properties to the south of Milton Rd and redirected the west end of Milton Rd in order to have a much bigger Archers’ Rd end.

You could also have bought properties to the east and west, and alternatively could have rotated the stadium slightly, or by 90 degrees,

And yes I went to the Dell several times. Your club went for the easy option.

And playing the long game is exactly what Liverpool did, and exactly what Pompey are presently doing ie buying up properties.

Yep - the whole of Whale Island. Just tell the Royal Navy to move their Command HQ and other infrastructure to somewhere else and they can transform the whole island into a stadium of the future !!

I think the hold up as you put it, was that nothing was holding it up, so it must have sunk !!

Playing the long game like Liverpool lol

About 18-20 odd years ago under Mandric, you had the land from BT and the goods yard from BR and were going to start building right away - in fact, didn't Mandric lay the first brick for the new development live on South Today news or something ?

I know you lost out a bit on sponsorship when ITV Digital went bust, but that only meant that the stadium capacity was to be reduced from 35k to 25k to cut costs.

As that was almost 20 years ago, it would certainly appear that you really are playing the long game. Care to enlighten us on where you are with things at the moment ? The difference of course is that Liverpool on the other hand, despite using the same strategy as you, have transformed Anfield into the stadium it is today, in that same 18-20 year time scale.

So the government, local council and the navy blocked Pompey moving. Correct. Liverpool never had that.

This has nothing to do with you little Whale Island pipe dream, or actually moving to a new site. Most clubs who want to develop, expand, or move, experience the same problems, but yours seem to have been ongoing for an unnecessarily long time it would seem.

18 -20 years ago under Mandric, when you had the land from BR and BT already secured and he actually started the new development with the 25k stadium, which included rotating the pitch. What happened to this and why did it stop ? You did get a new Tesco and a few other stores I seem to recall, but genuinely, what happened to the stadium ?

Seem to recall Mandric went to Leicester, so did he take the money and run ?

If you had secured the BT and BR land that long ago, why have you (only recently) been trying to buy up local properties around the ground ? Surely the Goods Yard and BT land would suffice (not looked at a map though) and even if you had done a new stand every 3 or 4 years, it would have been completed by now ?

Mandaric never started to build any part of any stadium anywhere. You obviously don't know what you are talking about.

The only move that may have come off was Horsea Island, and then the club folded. As I say, Pompey are now building long term.

I'm pretty sure I remember some press shots of Mandaric in a digger symbolically pretending to knock down some building or other behind the North Stand. It was meant to be the first step in his grand scheme to rotate the pitch. Fair play to you for having a long term plan. Since three quarters of the dump have been virtually untouched since the 1940s I would suggest that this long term plan may end up in the Guinness Book of Records.

I didn't pay much interest to the developments, because they were PFC, obviously. I do recall however, that the local news did a feature where Mandaric was wearing a white hard hat and was on site with a digger - at least giving the impression that work had commenced on the new stadium.
