Peter Shilton article (Are you reading Mr Lumley)? 21:00 - Jan 15 with 5204 views | stainrods_elbow | https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jan/15/peter-shilton-respect-diego-mar Interesting interview with Shilts in today's Guardian - I must admit I didn't realise he actually made his debut for England back in 1970, and had quite such an astonishing appearance record for club (1,390 games) and country (125 caps). Also interesting to see him criticise the state of modern goalkeeping for its perceived deficits in developing technique. (Anyone see where I might be going with this?) His point about top sides being built from the back, with a strong keeper and centre half, ought to be shouted very loud in the ear of Mark Warburton too. 'If you’ve got the right technique not only are you going to do great things, you’re going to avoid doing many bad things. And that’s the secret. Goalkeepers are not necessarily judged on saves. They’re judged on the amount of mistakes they make.' 'You keep your clean sheets and that helps the glory boys up front. If you’re letting goals in stupidly, it destroys the team. Alisson and Van Dijk are two colossuses — big, confident people. They have had a massive effect and got the best out of the other players as well. They’ve proved that football is still, fundamentally, the same. It all starts at the back. The goalkeeper is still the foundation of all your success.' Wondering if a certain Joe L. could perhaps be sent a copy of 'Shilton's Secrets' (presumably, now they've been made public, they're no longer secrets) and locked up in a padded room at HQ until he's got it by heart. Though if one were to toss him a copy, I fear he'd quite likely drop it. I also find it surprising he hasn't had more of a career in coaching, given his playing record. The guy might be 70, but so was Warnock, and the club could probably do worse than get him in on a retainer to try to do something - anything - for our hapless No. 1. If anyone needs a mentor right now, it's Joe. [Post edited 15 Jan 2020 21:07]

Peter Shilton article (Are you reading Mr Lumley)? on 22:51 - Jan 15 with 3928 views | CamberleyR | People that only really remember him from his later England days in the late 80s would be surprised just how good a goalkeeper he was in his prime. Brian Clough or more importantly Peter Taylor, who had been a fan since his early Leicester days, knew that signing Shilton in 1977 would be the final piece in the jigsaw and probably be the difference in making their talented Forest team that had just been promoted to the first division go up to the next level. He was just coming to his peak and they spent a record for the time £250k for a goalkeeper and were rewarded with the league title in his first season and the European Cup in the following two seasons. It's probably fair to say that wouldn't have happened without the signing of Shilton.

Peter Shilton article (Are you reading Mr Lumley)? on 23:23 - Jan 15 with 3875 views | daveB | pretty sure Lumley and almost every goalkeeper around understand what Shilton is saying, Lumley is just having a bad run and has lost his confidence. As for building from the back thats all well and good but ever manager should have his team playing the way they want rather than go along a defence first then attack philosophy which works for some but not everyone. MClaren and JFH both did that and had bugger all attacking threat so as soon as their sides conceded the game was over. Warburton has tried to change the clubs style of play to a more attacking style which has been brilliant when it's worked and a bit of a mess when it hasn't but if that his beliefs in how his team should play. Shilton was a good keeper but no club has hired him as a coach for over 20 years so would be a bit mad to get him in a QPR

Was on the piss in Spain in the late 70's, bumped into Shilts, Gemmill et al in a Benidorm bar, local whores heard who was in town...flies around shit. Anyway, still in a state of shock from the OP, who would have thought stainrods elbow read the Guardian!

He needs to get over the first Maradona goal. Maybe he's so obsessed with it because he was so badly at fault. Great keeper, but there's zero evidence of him being a good coach and you'll be hard pressed to find a player in the game from that era who liked him much. Respected, yes, but that's about it. Which maybe explains why the phone isn't ringing off the hook with people offering him cushy consulting work.

A bad error yes but probably shouldn't have been in a position to have to make a save had Norman Hunter been the Norman Hunter of Leeds and cleaned out Lato and the ball on the halfway line.

Spoilt for choice in those days; Shilton, Clemence, Corrigan and Parkes - each of whom would have been the number 1 keeper for many countries in the mid 70s...

I know it's not in step with popular opinion, but he really was a great keeper. One of the top 20, maybe even top 10, best in the world ever, in fact.

Totally agree Antti. I remember one game in the early 70's, the best 0-0 ever, with Phil Parkes in our goal and Shilton in Leicester's (I think or otherwise Stoke). Both along with Gerry played a blinder and all three were given 10's in a Sunday tabloid. Learned his trade understudying Gordon Banks at Leicester, made his debut at 16 and allowed them to cash in on the World Cup Winner in 1967 when he (Shilton) was still only 17! The only thing I'd disagree with there is the 'allowing them to cash in' bit. Although they remained on decent terms, in Banks's book he says that Shilton, at 17, basically told Leicester either he gets Banks's spot, or he leaves, so they were forced to sell arguably the world's best keeper! Amazingly, only Stoke came in for him. Madness as obviously he had several great years left. Banks himself retired with that eye injury, but came back and played in America essentially with one eye, and was still voted best keeper in the MLS. What a man!

Yes strange that nobody else wanted to buy him, at £50k it wasn't a huge fee at the time as a few strikers were going for double that. I think Stoke may have been newly promoted. However, England had a lot of very good keepers in the 70's, Stepney at Man U, Bonetti at the scum, Montgomery at Sunderland, Springett at Sheff W, Hodgkinson at Sheff U, Gordon West at Everton and several others who were highly rated. Maybe they didn't feel the fee was worth the upgrade.

I don’t care about his feelings and confidence. He is simply far from good enough, might never be, and we need a new keeper.
