Might we actually benefit from late goals which change the course of games this year? Late winner from Raff on Saturday and Inman just bagged an 85th minute equaliser (2-2) tonight. It would be a good monkey to get off our backs.

Was Matty Done on the bench and did he come on,because I presume he will start at left back when the season commences.

How did the young lad we got from Aston Villa perform, does he look a good prospect for the future based on what you have seen?

A very entertaining friendly last night.

Both goals conceded were very poor. Cannon got completely done on the right and MJ lost his man who glanced in a free header. Second goal was absolutely horrendous marking from the, unfortunately, very poor Jordan Williams. Got to be said he had a shocker last night and in all honesty, I’d be surprised if we see him again. When Kgosi moves to LWB he was a real livewire and got involved infinitely more.

Inman knocked a great goal across for Calvin to head home, then Wilbraham’s persistence paid off and we got a lucky rebound that fell to Inman to smash into the top corner. The third was a real goalmouth scramble that fell to Rathbone who rattled it into the roof of the net.

In terms of players: Lillis made a couple of smart saves. Cannon did OK but personally I think the injury is still playing on his mind. Adshead has a brilliant first half, quieter second, then came good again towards the end. Perkins was brilliant again, what a signing he could turn out to be. Special mention to JT who I thought was excellent. Calvin worked hard and got a good goal. Inman was very good. Liked the look of Finnerty he was very solid and no nonsense. Special mention to mcgahey who also had a very good game up against a fantastic striker in the shape of Asombalonga.

Encouraging result!

And I agree with OP Dalei, hopefully this might provide an element of psychological boost after all the late goals we’ve conceded over the past two seasons, often undeservedly. A few years ago we scored tonnes of late goals, I think it was the centenary season, and there was a feeling that if we weren’t winning going into the last few minutes of games then we shouldn’t worry. I’d love to get that back again.

Could it be an "England win on penalties in WC" kind of breakthrough Shun? We proved we can do it and we can but hope.

As for getting ahead of ourselves, mentioned by another poster, it seems most people on here are encouraged but not booking play-off tickets just yet. My view on this season would be mid-table = progress. Anything else is gravy, anything less probably a disappointment. That being said, the fan in me wants us to threaten the play-off spots. Otherwise why else do we watch?

Based on what I’ve seen so far, my concern is do we have enough goals in the team? Should Hill plunder the transfer market for a young hungry loan striker before the season starts?

Two possible areas where we can improve in terms of goals are the way we set up and play + converting more opportunities. Both are under our team and manager's control to some extent and results breed confidence, as we saw with England. So there's that.

As far as shopping is concerned, KH tried that last year with SH. Opinion seems to be divided on him, but not my cup of tea. As others have also pointed out, it isn't easy to acquire that type of player at any club. Even with the loosening of our purse strings, it's potentially more difficult for Keith. I suspect we won't be getting any more help this side of Xmas.

Their keeper made four really good saves last night, too,so we are creating chances. But they also hit the post. Still if it’s one of those ‘we’ll score one more than you’ seasons I won’t be grumbling.

I wasn't going to put this up. I started it in April but didn't finish it until well into May and it all seemed a bit academic after the Charlton game. It seemed a shame though; I had put so much into it. Anyway, this thread has given me the excuse.

So basically I have calculated the league table from all the results last year which would have been recorded had each game stopped at 90 and 85 mins (I know someone else had calculated it just for us). Interestingly, the promotion and playoff teams wouldn't have been different (minor changes in order). Dale would have had a couple more points and a few more places further up. Oldham is the team who suffered most from late goals in the end: Walsall have most reason to be grateful games last longer than 85 mins

Thanks for posting that - a labour of love if ever there was one. I think it was Shun who did the analysis on Dale?

Interesting that this had a similar sort of affect on Oldham as Dale in terms of league position.

Their 85min-FT period was even more diabolical than ours with 10 out of the 75 they conceded coming in that period - a catastrophic 13+% - disproportionately higher than Dale's at 6 out of 57 = 10+%.

So far so good in terms of benefitting from this period during this campaign. Let's hope we can extend the run to the end of the season. Three league places could make a big difference to us come May.

My initial reaction was that I was surprised the loss of points was so small as I was expecting more. I suppose the late season games where we dropped points late on (Bradford, Portsmouth) stick in my mind more than the ones where we gained points from late goals. The only one I can think of for the latter off the top of my head is the Doncaster game when we gained three points after 90 minutes. Is there a list of result-changing goals after 85 minutes?

I did something along those lines although I can’t claim credit for making a full league table à la Morden. I confess to being interested in why some teams concede/score late goals more than others and the underlying psychology behind the phenomenon. That’s because scoring/conceding late goals is probably my favourite/least favourite thing in football - I’d rather lose 3-0 than lose 3-2 in the last minute!

With you on that one. The shellacking Oxford gave us at home was less painful than throwing three points away at the death of a game - feels like a good night out, then get home to find you've been burgled.

I gave up on friendly pre season games a while ago.

Promising signs though reading comments that we look fitter and more mobile / better movement.

Not long to wait now and we get the cut and thrust back with 3 points at stake.

I think friendlies are great if you're desperate for a Dale fix.
