BBC Match Report 06:58 - May 9 with 9320 viewssomersetsimon

"The sight of the Swans' players aimlessly lumping long balls into Southampton's penalty area was indicative not only of their dismal form this season, but of the way in which the Welsh side - once renowned for their attractive playing style - have lost their identity."

That sums it up niceley

Ironically, I didn't feel it was the worst tactic tonight as Southampton's defenders did look pretty shaky under the high ball. The problem - as with most of what the players have been trying to do this season - was the lack of quality which allowed McCarthy to claim a lot of crosses under minimal challenge.

I thought their defenders won every high ball, from corners especially, we have no other plan than to use the same ball for a corner, what DO they practice in the training ground, their centre half lapped them up

I was thinking this last night, you have the nerve to have a go at Cardiff for hoofing, at least we play the ball up to our own. How did you end up with such a bad team?

Yup Soton have conceded most goals in PL from crosses. However most other PL teams have attacking players who can head the ball.

We used to have one and a guy who could put it on his head with a regular accuracy. That partnership was responsible for quite a few of our goals. I wonder what happened to them? Anyone? What were their names?

A lot of Swans fans have an arrogant attitude when it comes to style of play and think we have the DNA of Real Madrid.

Personally I would have given the job to Pulis and can't believe the attitude of the fans and board towards that idea. I think the club came out and made a statement that he wouldn't be considered.

You appointed Warnock to get the job done and he did.

I don't get the anti long ball attitude myself. Bottom line is to win a game and for the fans to see goals. For the last few seasons we have been near enough the lowest scorers in the division.

If we do go down, will look forward to winning games, seeing more goals.....hopefully!

If we set up our club like everyone else, we're never going to compete with our lower income.
Our old style of play allowed us to pick up players that other clubs didn't want, but could fit into our system.
If we go for cheaper versions of Andy Carroll and Ryan Shawcross, we're doomed.
Martinez had the right idea. If you can't outspend teams, then you try to something different.

The worse bit was that I was actually hoping we'd lump out more balls to Abraham. He was starting to win a few balls and they were starting drop back really deep.
There was no chance we were going to create a chance any other way.

Real pity we didn't beat them ffs, we could have laughed at his moans, now he's had the last life, I hate that tw@t with a passion and that silly tw@t with him Bowen.

What happened over by the dugout early in the 2nd half I saw a bit of a fracas, but was watching the game when it seemed to kick off.

I know, but I do t see you play that often. I was shocked to be honest. That young hungry team that beat us 1 nil in the little woods cup on your rise up 9 years ago was it? They would have done in it last night and what did that team cost? Makes you wonder don’t it? Like I said elsewhere loyal, I don’t think relegation would be the end of the world for your club, maybe a new start to have a go again and learn from mistakes made?

We’ve been hoping that lessons would be learnt for a few years now. Even promised a root Andy branch review. Don’t think it will happen whilst the current chairman is in place though. It’s obvious really as it will illustrate how incompetent he is. Like I said on another tread... your only as strong as your weakest team member, but your always limited by the strengths of your leader. Our clearly is out of his depth and ever since the bayram tutumlu fiasco he’s unable to get it right in terms of recruitment as often as before. That tells its own story!

He's also claiming they were promised a police escort to the ground, but they waited and nobody turned up 😂

He finished his interview on Sky last night with a smile saying...

"I'd recommend the Vale as a place to stay"

Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

That’s because we’ve got the worst midfield in the PL. Seriously they couldn’t create a fart in a bathtub. When we paid £15 m for Clucas and he’s alongside Andy King then you know we are in deep shit. The midfield, or lack of it has been the problem for at least three years and it was consistently ignored. Jenkins along with Morgan and the other sellouts have ruined this club, and the idea that he’s a Director of Football is beyond parody. It’s all caught up with them.

Really?

I thought they dominated us aerially. We didn't win a header off one of our corners and we had loads.

I got butchered on here for slating Clucas, why, because he scored 2 goals. Fuch my eyes.

The situation is desperate now. We need our identity back.

Either promote some passionate youngsters from the excellent U23 side (Connor gave his all yesterday - I'd rather see that than a 'classy' Ki stroll around for 90 minutes) or the squad needs a complete overhaul. Hoofball is not welcome.

High balls into the area first half, Llorente wasnt playing mun, A Ayew was!!

overall a lacklustre, aimless, clueless......rudderless in midfield, and relying on individuality rather than teamwork for a result.

we were once acclaimed for our style of play by the World.

Now we will held aloft as a warning to other Clubs about selling.

We're still an exemplar club and model to the wider footballing world when you put it like that. Shame it's not in a good way, but hey ho you can't have everything.
