Kodi - Firestick 09:47 - Nov 1 with 3668 viewsJackfath

Unfortunately my raspberry pi went kaput. The drawback of this system is the lack of a reset button built in which, if the pi freezes, can be pressed to reboot the system. One can be added but it's a little fiddly. Anyway.

I am now thinking of either a droidbox type setup, or a firestick. I haven't had a firestick previously and therefore need some expert opinion.

Is the firestick the way to go?
Do they just plug into the HDMI output of a TV?
Are there any other power sources needed?
Is Kodi and then Flawless easy to load onto it?
Are there any additional costs involved with the firestick i.e Do you have to subscribe to Amazon Prime?
If you've got one would you recommend?
Which one is the best to get?

Thanks for any advice given.

Yes.
Yes
Power cable/standard Plug.
Simple.
No, just have a standard Amazon account.
100% recommend.
I have just a basic one and it does the job.

Obviously i fully recommend Flawless. Can get your usual BBC I player, Youtube etc etc.

I have no doubt that you will be happy if you go down the Firestick route. easy to transfer from tv to tv due to its size.

Thanks for the response.

What needs plugging in? Doesn't the stick just go into the HDMI plug on the TV?

Does Flawless/Kodi corrupt the firestick in any way? Will all the other features still work i.e Will Amazon Prime still function if Flawless is added?

I’ve got a firestick and a fire tv box. Firestick is hdmi/wifi, fire tv is the same but with an Ethernet option. They both need to be plugged into the mains, but that’s it.

Very easy to install Kodi. You pretty much just install downloader from the search function and then Kodi from downloader. Once Kodi is on, Flawless/sportsmania etc load the same way as they would via Kodi on any other device.

I think you need an Amazon account (not certain) you don’t need Amazon prime, but if you do it unlocks more content - i.e. grand tour, amazon original series’, but I’d guess you can find these easily on Kodi anyway. It’s also a 2 minute job to install terrarium, which seems better than Kodi for films/box sets

Yes, but that doesn’t power it. There is a separate plug for electricity. It’s very simple when you see it.

I'm guessing there's no Ethernet capability and has to be connected via WiFi?

On the firestick yes, on the fire tv you have both options

Fathi, All your questions have been answered, it's the way to go. I would just add if you sign up to flawless etc you can download perfect player onto the firestick or smart iptv and load your account onto there as well, so no need to access it on kodi, although that in itself is easy enough

The hair and the beard have gone I am now conforming to society, tis a sad day The b*stards are coming back though

Differences between the Stick and the TV versions?

Edit: TV box has to have an additional dongle for the ethernet so cost is more. Looks like Firestick is better option over WiFi.

The box is 4K and has HDR, the stick is 1080.

You notice a difference when watching Amazon programmes or things like iplayer. Not so much on Kodi to be honest.

Stick is a bit more portable (though taking the box around a mates house is hardly a problem). Apparently the new fire tv is tiny anyway though.

Too many options these days!!!

I had 4 channels growing up, now we are all debating over 1080 or 4K.

You have to be careful with the 4k, your internet needs to be that bit quicker to handle it.
Chances are that your internet will be ok but some people do struggle with speeds in relation to where they live.

Too me, the quickness and smoothness would relate to your internet speed?

Also you need a 4K TV to actually watch anything in 4K.

Which I haven't got. Also the addon cost of the ethernet cable just made me sway towards the stick. I'll see how I get on with that.

It’s honestly as simple as buying a firestick and googling how to install Kodi. It’s a very user-friendly device. You’ll have it done in 20 minutes.

I use a Firestick and Flawless. Works a treat although the Firestick does need resetting now and again. Easy to install Flawless, all instructions on Brian's site.

When you say resetting....do you mean pulling the mains plug out and popping back in?

My Firestick does have the tendency not to start Kodi but i do what i mention above and it works.

That was the death of the Pi. They don't like having their power pulled and then put back in. It's a reason why they're cheap as they don't have a reset or standby button on them which would be ideal for situations like this.
