I said this two weeks back, the lad believes in his own hype. To me, he's walking around with an arrogance that he's too good to be here. In possession wasteful, weak aerially and weak in the challenge.

The lad has obviously got all the talent to be a top defender, but he needs to get back into reality and realise he's nowhere near as good as he thinks he is at the moment.

I don't think he is learning from it myself. Time and place for the fancy stuff, all decent pro's know that what we saw from him yesterday was arrogance, his ego is writing cheques his ability can't cash .

It's also yet again a case of us not recruiting well, there is no real pressure for his place, if he knew any fook ups and he'll be benched he wouldn't half as sloppy, i'd honestly be looking at a deal for Chico as cover, the premier league is easier now than it was a few years ago, won't take him long to surpass what we have at the back.

I honestly can't see the logic in this.
" i'd honestly be looking at a deal for Chico as cover, the premier league is easier now than it was a few years ago, won't take him long to surpass what we have at the back. "
Chico, a Red Card magnet, prone to outrageous gaffes and diving, who hasn't played a really competitive game in 2 years to replace another much younger player who is also making mistakes.
It is known as "living in the past" and viewing it through rose coloured glasses.
Chico had brilliant positional sense and awareness but without mistakes he was not.
How you think the Prem is easier now than 2 to 3 years ago also amazes me.

I think Mawson needs a spell on the bench he is however a player with great potential. Perhaps we need to look at some free agents just as additional cover to take us to the next window.

That's the problem having no defensive cover or competition for places. We have 3 for CB - if PC persists with 5 at back no concept iron for places. Mawson could play crap every week and still keep his place.

The logic is that we need competition for places and Huw Jenkins is director of football so will sign somebody he knows who is cheapand on a free.

As for rose tinted specs it's again how the club operate. Did we really get it wrong bring back Leon Britton, siggy ,caroll ?

There is plenty if sound logic in 're signing players. We are a stepping stone club stuck in the far East of the country signing players that actually know the place area and people is not such a bad thing .

My point about Chico was a bit flip but he isn't a donkey, was always the fittest player at the club when here so that shows how good a pro he is . In an ideal world the club would have signed players in the window, we didn't.

In the window we lost Cork, Montero, Siggy and Llorente amongst others.

We brought in Sanches, Mesa and Clucas.....all players who play the position that Cork played, 3 to replace one.

We never replaced Siggy when we should have used the money to replace him and bring an extra quality attacking player......making our depth stronger.
Also when we lost Montero, a suitable winger should have been brought in for the 12 months that he would notbe with us.

Absolutely shocking window, the money we got from Siggy and yet arguably we are weaker.......certainly weaker as an attacking option.

Is correct.

Back in the day we had Chico, Ash, Rangel in his prime, Britton, De Guzman, Michu plus more who all had the confidence / ability to play a certain way, which was on the deck, quickly and with intent. We no longer have that, the sooner people realise this yet the better, blame Huw.

One touch football isn't just about technique which all professional footballers should have, it starts with movement off the ball and ours is absolutely shocking and has been for a couple of seasons now with no better example than the first 45 yesterday. Dreadful. At times, it made Watford look like they had 2 more players than us which is exactly the apparent numerical advantage that players Leon & JdG always seemed to give us. Always moving, always available. Until we get the fundamental philosophy of movement off the ball instilled into every player or acquire players who instinctively have that like Leon & JdG, I'm afraid one touch football remains a pipedream.

The OP is right about hype etc. I have taken my grandson and his mate to some away games, and they always want autographs after. All the players have signed some for the kids except Mawson. He just walks straight past them and on to the bus. Big time Charlie.

At Southampton he went off on his own with his parents and a private driver while all the other players got on the coach.

Means nothing. His parents live in Berkshire, no more than an hour from Southampton. I'm sure PC knew he would be going 'home' for the rest of the weekend as long as he reported for training on Monday like everyone else. Don't make mischief where none exists.

It's been surprisingly hard to replace some of our stalwarts. Leon, Ash, Rangel, all better than players bought to replace them. Even the likes of Dyer never really improved upon (ok we don't use wingers now, but Barrow or Lamah? Really?). Sinclair - nope. Tayls - took farkin years and Olsson isn't playing that much better. Ben, JdG, Michu, no chance. And the teamwork is certainly no better.

But we had something special and we're just normal now. Hopefully PC can find a way through his excess of CM options to a system that works for us.

Excellent post.
The only thing I might take exception to is the fact that I don't think Clement has an abundance of midfield options as they're all pretty mediocre - apart from the potential that Sanches undoubtedly has.
Midfield is where the failings of HJ and the Board stands out above all their other feckups.

Everybody has a bad day at the office and Alfie's was yesterday - he was dreadful. That last attempted 'tackle' brought gasps of disbelief from the commentator on the stream I was watching - "HE'S GONE IN WITH THE WRONG FOOT!" What an unbelievably pathetic excuse for a tackle from a Premier defender! Time to leave him out and let Fernandes and the much-improved Van der Hoorn take over in central defence. It'll give him some perspective on where he's at - tremendous potential but lots to learn. So that means we don't play 3 centre halves - great! Just play the players we've got in their proper positions and we'll defend competently and effectively.

Duffy's tackle on Perez in the Brighton/Newcastle game should be the first item on the agenda tomorrow morning at the post match team brief (if there is one),the tackle was superb,Duffy received a yellow but stopped Perez, that's what defending is all about.

As the 2nd half resumed and we saw that vdH was being withdrawn, I said to my brother that he was far from being the worst of the 3 centre backs in the first half and there was only one candidate really.

You were spot on. I could see Alfie was not on his game. He was making error after error and nearly gave a goal away just before half time. Clement seems a bit rigid in his analysis of how the game is going and makes some poor decisions IMHO. Not replacing Alfie instead of VdH was one of them.

When Ash hit 70 yard diagonal passes he was usually 8 or 9 out of 10 accurate. Alfie tries this a lot and is about 2 out of 10 accurate. Dont do it lad, you look a fool.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Our players aren't good enough to play one touch. Not enough technical ability, intelligence to move into space, or general awareness of what's happening around them.

Unfortunately players with those attributes have not been a priority in the club's recruitment strategy for some time. That, coupled with the appointment of a succession of managers who did not prefer that style of play has got us to where we are now.

I hope PC isn't developing a blind spot for Alfie like Brendan did for Sinclair, undroppable and unsubbable (if there is such a word!). Mike vdH has come in for a lot of criticism on here, some maybe justified, but he's stepped up in Bartley's absence and done far better than many expected and he was certainly better than Alfie in the first half and I don't think Richarlison would have got past him in that situation.

I'll just say my piece on this.

That "tackle" was a disgrace to every current, former and dead professional centre half that has ever played the game and Mawson should be utterly embarrassed.

I said to my Dad, if he was half the player he thought he was he should have taken Richarlison out, with or without ball. Be a real leader, take one for the team if necessary, and salvage a point.

I reckon Ki Sung Yeung would have made a better effort.

Sorry, that is stretching it a bit too far, Ki would most likely have run alongside him until he took the shot.

The ball and attacker should have been booted straight out of the stadium.

If in doubt kick it out.

Junior school stuff that is.

If messa got a hammering from the coaching team after the game, then I hope Mawson got it a lot more.
