What does Winner say about the Ajax captaincy vote? |
There are quotations from various people in the Ajax team at the time (Ruud Krol, Johnny Rep, Barry Hulshoff, Gerrie Muhren) in the chapter concerned (It's a relatively short one as most in the book are).
George Knobel, the coach who took over after the 1973 European Cup win maintained he was just continuing a club tradition whereby the players themselves chose the captain prior to the season starting although this wasn't certain. Gerrie Muhren for one maintained that it wasn't tradition and it was just the new coach laying down his authority. It's mentioned that the captaincy election result was used as a convenient smokescreen by Cruyff as he was bound to leave Ajax sooner or later anyway. |  |
