Having to put up with homophobic abuse from the English rugby crowd.

I like rugby and football equally. I'm not one of those typical welsh people who feels the need to pick one and let it define their personality like some of my friends and family.

What has annoyed me here is I can't help but think this would be front page news if it was football but because it's rugby it just murmurs quietly in the background. Homophobia has no place in sport or society and if this is proven to be true then the "fans" in question need to be dealt with severely, in the same way misbehaving football fans are dealt with.

I don't post on here much (having embarrassed myself with an attempt at writing a song for Bony that I can now see as pathetic). I would probably be referred too as a 'plastic' by many of you as I have never been to the Liberty Stadium. I have lived about 180 miles from Swansea for nearly 30 yrs but have always, always loved my city it's people and it's football and rugby history. I stood (all be it propped up on crutches due to having knackered knees) on the North Bank at the Vetch when Leighton James demolished Derby County (and many games before and after that). My uncle captained the Allwhites and my family organised a boys football team called Treboeth United which grew a talented individual called Dean Saunders.

I played rugby for many years, after discovering it at Gwyrhosydd Junior school. I have only seen poor behaviour in a rugby crowd once (Morriston v Bonymaen). The abuse Nigel Owens is reported to have suffered is abhorrent and must be addressed to stop rugby events becoming anything like football. I once attended a Rugby League event at the Vetch and witnessed the mid-point in behaviour hovering somewhere between that of football and Rugby Union.

While on here I would like to make my opinion known (having played both games and supported both). Football has the ability to be a 'beautiful game' but is sadly played, to a large extent, by overpaid tossers who do everything to be unsporting. They are backed by one-eyed idiots like Arsy Wenger. Rugby Union is a sport made up of attempts to cheat, whether it be stamping or punching the opposition, but this is accepted as part of the game and getting caught is something you take on the chin - you know, like a man. Rules-wise the difference is just as stark with football being akin to snakes and ladders and rugby being more like chess with gum shields.

So, to answer many previous posts, Rugby Union is a better sport. This doesn't stop me loving the Swans.

Finally, Darran, your smirky, low level homophobia is generally offensive to proper men who 'live and let live'. A once colleague of mine would have summed you up beautifully - "he protesteth too much". I think you might need to 'readjust your lifestyle kid.

Well said, mate.

It's pretty big news on the sports pages and the airwaves up here in London I can assure you. Rugby crowds do tend to be a bit more civilised than SOME football crowds, viz the disgusting Newcastle morons at the Liberty a month or so ago, and their vile obscene barracking of Alan Pardew. You normally never see that sort of obscene nasty behaviour at rugby matches. There again, there are some obnoxious specimens frequenting HQ as I know through personal experience. It tends to be on a more individual level in rugby, rather than a whole section of a crowd chanting and barracking.

i love football, i love rugby, i love sport, all sport.
i am a fan, i hope a sporting fan, sportmanship is paramount in all sport and yes that includes the umpires and referees, without them we would'nt have a sporting contest.
Have respect for your opposition and if you are a spectator, have some self control and you will enjoy what is being laid out before you.
RESPECT people, in and out of the sporting arena.

Ow that hurt! How long did it take you to compose that reply?

To paraphrase, "I'll always love the people of Swansea" but, by Christ some of the actual individuals can be narrow-minded, knuckle-dragging Flaps.

Sorry to inform you but I will not be limiting my entertainment or interest to just one sport based on your one-eyed, six fingered opinion.

Here's another one for you (risking the wrath of a no-testies Troll), I want the best for all that is Welsh (including Cardiff City, Newport County, Wrexham and the Welsh National Tiddliwinks champion) and always will.

To the many wonderful people from my city and, dare I say country, "have a nice day". To the vitriol soaked no-marks, "turn off your computer/tablet, put down your flacid members and go and be more interesting" you might find you enjoy it.

Ah, bless!

You have only seen bad behaviour by a rugby crowd once lol. Maybe you should get out a bit more. I was i cardiff the night wales beat England in 2005 and the behaviour that night was terrible, fighting, criminal damage and it's was rugby fans causing it.

Add to this the fact I did a bit of stewarding for matches between the Swansea Unis and Cardiff Unis.
Not exactly peaceful days out. Interesting, but not peaceful.
Also remember my dad taking me to Stradey Park in the 70's (he was really into his rugby and had been a ref- R.I.P.) Seem to remember numerous punch ups in the crowd, especially playing Swansea and Cardiff teams.
Give beer to those that want to fight the World after a pint or 2. Put them in a crowd and watch the outcome.
It could be tiddlywinks/ marbles/ rugby or football. There's always someone who can't handle their shandy and wants to cause a bit of grief.

If you wake up breathing, thats a good start to your day and you'll make many thousands of people envious.

Point taken, I must have had a sheltered life. Either that or I was too busy dishing it out on the pitch to notice (great days!). Either way though, I hold Nigel Owens in the highest regard as a referee and as a man who is willing to stick two fingers up to the homophobic tossers who can't just live and let live.

Aye.
I enjoyed playing it when I was younger. I enjoy watching the youth and lower division teams that want to play running rugby (rarely kicking, s'pose that's why I like watching League)- can't stand watching constant aerial hoof.
No matter.
No person should have to take homophobic abuse. Just wish the 'upset fan' had drawn it to the attention of a copper or steward.
Got the people who were giving the abuse thrown out (hopefully arrested and banned.)
That way, rugby could send out a message that this sh1te won't be tolerated.
Enjoy both sports mate.

No, just my initials. You're not the first to point it out though. My form teacher in Penlan Comp (as was) used to call me Mabel - git. Stanley Harold Mugford had a true 'rapist' wit when he wasn't locked up in Cefn Coed.
