The Tories made a mess of things (although I think all sides supported the country-specific social protection schemes). However, you also need to look at Labour MPs' voting records and public statements whenever proposals to clamp down on immigration were made. The recent proposal to reopen the two immigration detention centres is diametrically opposite to what most Labour MPs wanted when in opposition. Remember that resolution at the 2019 Annual Conference saying the manifesto should commit to “maintain and extend free movement rights”, “close all detention centres” and to “reject any immigration system based on incomes, migrants’ utility to business, and number caps/targets.” [Post edited 29 Aug 13:59]

They've barely been in power 3 months and people are blaming them for all that gone on before, they have inherited a hornets nest thanks to the Tories.

No that’s just political spin. There are a lot of multi party committees that scrutinise government spending. The shadow cabinet are also there to scrutinise, Privy council, OBR, HOL etc. Rachael reeves was shadow chancellor for nearly four years. If it’s only now she’s realising the economy is in a bad state she is even more incompetent than those that were in charge!
They are just laying the ground work so when they absolutely hammer working people (and they will) they can say “it’s not our fault guv” even though they campaigned (and won) on a platform that they wouldn’t raise taxes. | |

There's a lot of commentary out there about "taxing the rich" which in theory is fine, but in reality faces a multitude of issues.
#1, 1% of income tax payers already pay 30% of all income tax.
#2, How do you tax "net worth"? I may own £1m worth of shares in Amazon, but to pay tax on that I'd have to sell them, which may make them worth less than £1m.
#3, If I was that rich, I'd just piss off to Monaco and pay no tax at all, thus leaving the Treasury worse off.
#3 is the one your average Socialist just can't get their head around. It's a lot easier for wealth to be mobile these days, and chasing it offshore will only increase the burden on those who can't do so. The best tax rate is not a punitive one. It's one that people don't mind paying, whether they're a Billionaire or on minimum wage. | |

Boundy I agree wholeheartedly, but Labour are getting blamed for everything, I'm no labour supporter, the whole political landscape needs to change, its long overdue, its either Labour or the Tories, same horse different jockey, I don't like Starmer I did at the start of his leadership but that quickly dwindled, the Tories have caused this country so many problems particarlarly over these last 5yrs its incrediable and have left an enormance debt, a lot of that debt has come from making their mates mega rich.
Yet Labour are getting the blame, just what the f can they do with the mess that they've been left with.
I've worked 47 yrs so far another 3 yrs and a bit to go, I've paid enough into the coffers and any tax rises are abhortent, but why are Labour getting the shit for itr all.
Nobody can start the boats coming across all the Tories did was chuck money we did have at the problem, paid the French millions may even bee billions and the french were just letting them cross.
Our obsession on halting Climate change is another tax, the UK produces less than 0.1 or even 0.01 % of carbon emmissions, yet we got to be seen to lead the way, the bigger countries like China, India, Russia and the US are laughing at us while burning the atmosphere, its a massive excuse to con and rob the tax payer of even more and more money.
Electric vehicles waste of space, engineers in my work place are constantly moaning about their vehicles I'm lucky has I don't have a electric vehicle and nor do I want one, ASHP another, Solar panel energy is probably the only thing that maybe worth it. | |
