Frey and Nardi drag QPR through clunky Millwall show - Report
at 11:22 24 Sep 2024

With a poor tackle, Colback should have had a yellow in the last game he played; he surprisingly calmed down after that lucky escape as he realised he got away with it.

I observed after the Sheff game where he got another yellow for asking for a yellow, he changed his approach. In his last game, he back-chatted the ref way less, so I am hoping he's learned just to shut up and get on with it. I am hoping he learned that being quiet lets you get away with way more than having a go at the ref, as he managed to avoid getting a yellow in that game.

By all means wind up the oppo, but even if the ref is a knobber (Stroud) one just has to zip it.

If you do want to talk to the ref, you could do it the way Dunne does. Dunne's act of "ref he just inserted a baseball bat in my rectum, I am a victim help" comical look on his face as he holds out his hands expressing disbelief at such a Hague war crime that has just gone unpunished.

But with Colback we shall see.

I agree.

1) This is obvious, but who plays RW then? Andersen or Smyth. One is not quick enough the other is poor at crossing. I would go with Smyth as I think with Dembele then can do a lot of 1-2's which would really open up the opp defence.

2) Yet Madsen filled in for Colback, he was okay there. But I think Varane was better coming on, not much in it between the two though. But yeah Madsen plays that 10 as Andersen does.

Are Andersen and Cobacks' contracts up at the end of the season? I think they are. And in the second season, they got an auto bump up if we stayed in the Champ (as we did) to get them to come in, I believe. Therefore, letting them go for Madsen and Varane seems to be the long-term plan.

I see in one of the photos Chair and below him is that Hoo's and Norey?

At least Chair is still with QPR and has not been sold to Turkish clubs.

Up and to the left of Chair is Fox and Colback I see hiding from the Sunny weather.

Are there any others we can spot?

Nardi on today's draw
at 17:30 22 Sep 2024

Frey yesterday, Nardi against Wed.
Frey gets one chance that he had to work hard to create for himself and puts it away from a difficult angle.
Thats quality. I still think he needs to be a little bit quicker and then he create some chances all on his own. But his movement is all correct and we can see he can finish.

We were lucky that Millwall pushed too many forward and at the same time in the same movement Cook, Andersen, and Demeble knitted it altogether for Frey to do the last hard part and put it away.

They are talented players, but not in the correct positions for all of them (Cook & Frey, yes, Dembele and Andersen, no).

Regular goal-scoring forwards are rare at QPR. As a result, the squad really does not know what to do when they see one.

Also, would you want to kiss Frey?

Marti on the Millwall game
at 16:00 21 Sep 2024

As predicted we could not break the press. Madsen was better but not by much and that's not really Fields job. So, it means Saito and Demeble has to make it happen.

Wall packed the flanks, so that was it game over. The only reason we scored that goal was Wall pushed forward against their manager's advice just moments before, got caught with too many forward on the breakaway, and magical skill from Dembele and Frey in the exact same move got us undeservedly level.

That was like Wed too lucky and not really a controlled performance. We played like the away team. Poor. Andersen, with Madsen, is too slow to get around the pitch. You can play one, but not both, really. You could see the difference when Varane was on, and it's not as if he tore up any trees, but you could see the energy there and the movement.

We were also luck that Wall had way many more injuries than we do and to key players. I was impressed how they have recruited for their squad over the summer. Clever recruitment by them.

We look weak still without Chair. Still cannot get out our own half. It's good that most of the time, our defence is very good indeed with the amount of attacks it has to defend against. And that Nardi is a quality keeper.

Marti on the Millwall game
at 17:52 20 Sep 2024

Marti is having a laugh about the Palace press.

Sure, Wed did it very effectively against us, and QPR could not cope; even in the 2nd half, it was better but still not good enough. But for the cup game Palace who may press in the Prem did not bother as they were cruising against QPR.

So, I am not sure the coping with pressing teams issue has been solved. Maybe Marti knows this and is just playing the PR game and has it all sorted for Wall. Lets hope so.

I suspect Jake and Chair won't be on the subs bench even for Wall; it will take another two games. They still need to get back to match fitness, so there is still some way to go.

I would like to see Lloyd, Dembele, and Smyth behind Frey, with Field and Colback (Varane if not fit) in the middle. As JCS won't be fit, I would look at Ashby for RB, as despite his mistakes, he looked interesting on the breakaways. Bringing Saito on in the second half for Lloyd and Santos for Smyth once they have run the oop's defence into the ground.

But I suspect he will play Madsen again on the left, even though I am not impressed with him so far. And he probably play Andersen moving Dembele over to the right. I am not sure this setup is balanced enough.

Err no.
You had to track back in those days too. You had to track back as far as I can remember from the 80's onwards. In the old 4-4-2 system which most teams played in the 80's, wingers would get subbed off for not helping out the fullbacks.

George Graham blasted Merson and Rocky for Arsenal if they did not track back so, no classy winger was safe. Adams would hammer the rest of his teammates if they did not get back and defend. There is a well-documented case where Arsenal won a game 4-1, and the Arsenal defence stayed in the dressing room for an extra 20 minutes to have a big argument about why they conceded that one consolation goal!

Sinton used to track back so, no tracking back has been part of the game for 50+ years now.

Warnock surrounded Adel with Derry and Hill, proper cloggers who got stuck in and with tactical know-how. Such as Cook does for us now. Then he told them they were not allowed to pass to Adel in their own half or would be fined.

Warnock knew that would force Adel to be in the correct part of the pitch, the last third, where he could do the most damage as otherwise, he would not get the ball. Which as we know makes Adel very angry. No doubt at first, Adel complained to the others, "why do you not pass to me?" and they no doubt replaced "gaffer has told us not to pass to you in our own half or we are fined each time we do it".

This was supper clever by Warnock as if Adel complained to him, he could say "its not you, I love you, you know that Adel, your may fav player Adel, its the other players they are not as good as you and therefore will give the ball away and the oppo will score."

This way Adel who is an emotional basket case as know, didn't feel bad and actually felt good as Colins fav. Along with Warnock forcing him to play even if he played badly, ensures that he would look shite game after game unless he turned it on and played properly. It forced Adel to play his proper game. And its also why Warnock subbed him at 60 mins most games as he needed him fit for the next one and not strolling about assuming the game was won. Once the game was secure, off he came, replaced with another classic Warnock battler. This is all guessing on my part, but you can see how it worked out.

Back to the point, Adel did not need to run back as we had a team full of players who did that already. Adel did what many other players could not even do now, beat three players and put the ball in the back of the net. Or, as teams often feared, dribble into the box, get fouled and get a pen. Often teams stood off him as the oppo defence was really worried about giving away a pen. Very scared they were of that. Adel got you chances in the last third. Something QPR struggle with to this day.

Adel the best Adel that is, would get into any and all championship teams right now. That Adel is top-level prem quality, as he proved in that season for us. Remember top scorer and assists from ... midfield!

His defence should be "it's for personal use m'lord". And claim as a he's a rich footballer he can afford that much and he needs such a large amount for his stature.

Then the prosecution will claim that's absurd and his defence will say "just look at the size of him your honor? ... the defence rests".

After that, he should get a significantly reduced sentence and long term counselling for self-abuse.

I am surprised the plane got off the ground with him on board.
No wonder he was stopped at the airport ...

"oh sorry sir, we didn't realise that you're that big because you're err ... that big and not hiding anything in your coat, we'll just take a quick look in your bags as a tickbox exercise now that you here with us anyway and you can be on your way ... oh what's this!!!"

I wonder if they did the old stomach pump to see if he had more inside him and then realised there would be no room with all the burgers and fries already in there.

It's a good job the CEO states who is under contract and for how long, as not doing so would only increase false rumours and pressure on the team. Oh, wait ... doh!

I see Armstrong and Willock got dropped for the last game in their respective teams. And Dykes is struggling to get into a L1 team. If they had signed new contracts, both of these would for sure be players much more with us. Willock would be a starter (especially as Chair is out) and Armstrong may have started a few as well.

Kohli should sign a new contract do, a Les and demand to be played or loaned out to team that will play him. Otherwise, he could end up like Amos in Scotland on the bench or worse, like poor Kakay with no club. Dozy conned Pompy into a contract but he's getting subbed a lot now. I think they are onto him.

Crystal Palaeze Cup Match Thread Sponsored by NUMPTY LTD.COM

Palarse have never won a cup so, when in the cups they now always put out a strong side as that's all they have to look forward too. Thats the prem for you, a victory is only losing 2-1 to citech and possibly winning a cup. After Wet Spam won a euro cup, they all see that as the route to any sort of success now. Who can blame them, when Arsenal put the kids out again.

Whereas we have decided to throw in the towel. I am not even sure what formation we are playing. Is it three at the back? Or is it just Cook against the world? We better win against Millwall or all of this will be for nought. Is Colback the latest injury now?

I suppose if we go all-out attack, we can just ask Cook to win all the breakaways :P

watching Palace match via QPR+
at 17:03 17 Sep 2024

That's a shame, as I was just about to fly into Luxembourg to watch it at my local there. Dark markets and all that.

I do this because it is cheaper than buying just one pint in a gastropub that has five big screens and one small one. The smallest one being the only one I can request to watch the QPR game on, as everyone else is a Manure London fan.

That still results in a huff and guff from the pub staff, even though the sign outside will say all EFL games on here. So, they are supposed to have it on anyway, not 6 screens with Manure on all of them.

And even though there will be more than me watching it as it's a London derby, they will still be upset for asking to change it and make it work (as it was not set up to work the first time).

Of course, that's fantasy, and in the end, I had to pony up for Sky so the misses could watch the tennis. Tragically, the red button it is and sounds, of course, on mute.

In other news, assisted dying should be made legal and freely accessible for those who have to endure Sky's EFL commentary. Now, who said Tyler is not a lifesaver?

Marti speaks on Wed tactics
at 15:47 17 Sep 2024

Source: https://www.qpr.co.uk/news/2024/september/16/mart-we-must-be-ready-for-palace-ch

If you watch the video, we get more information than in the article about the tactics of Wed and QPR.
I think it's great that they identified that we could not break the press in the first half (even though it is obvious that some managers never see it). I am not sure we had such as great 2nd half as he states, it was better but still not great.

He also mentions their RB playing RW and then switching. Interesting idea. This means the other 4 defenders (they played with 5 at the back) move over to form a back 4 when Wed are attacking as the RB is now a RW. And revert on defending.

He also says there were not happy as a management team after the game, this is great as they realise we got a lucky escape there and that we need to improve. I think we only scored that late goal as Wed had so many defenders out, if they were back no way that goa would have happened.

He states new faces will be playing tonight so, I expect Ashby to start, Santos maybe RW or possibly Anderton/Smyth, this is just wishful thinking as I want to see Dembele start as AMC.

He said Lloyd will get more mins so, I am hoping he starts on the LW with Madsen sub. Lloyd should be told to carry the ball up the left hand side and only cross it or beat his man if he feels he can. Otherwise drive it up the pitch so, we keep the ball in their half. I think if he has these instructions he can do that with his pace.

I notice if as a sub you do something significant like score as Lloyd did, then Marti will sometimes reward players with a start. I am hoping this is the case and this time Lloyd does not blow it.
