Best Albums of 2013 14:54 - Nov 19 with 5267 viewsBrianMcCarthy

Any recommendations for the end of year list?

Mine:-

1) Arcade Fire - Reflektor
2) Sigur Ros - Kveikur
3) Johnathan Wilson - Fanfare
4) Daughter - If You Leave
5) Bill Callahan - Dream River

Maybe only Arcade Fire's album is good enough to be Top 5 material in a good year. Haven't found much I like this year. Any pointers?

Other honourable mentions : Savages and Motorhead.

Going to get Motorhead tonight before Newsquiz Rock 'N' Roll.

With you on Arcade Fire, saw them at the Roundhouse last week, they were great, a really good night. I also liked the new Vampire Weekend album too.

I also thought the Civil Wars album, imaginatively titles The Civil Wars, was good.

In the Roundhouse???

Are they not that popular over there?

Good shouts, Limehouse. Thought James Blake's second album was stronger than his debut - seems the Mercury panel agreed. Always enjoy Bonobo's stuff.

Other stuff I liked this year in a similar electro vein were:
Machinedrum - Vapor City
Jon Hopkins - Immunity

In terms of singer-songwriter albums, Pale Green Ghosts by John Grant definitely deserves a mention.

Yeah the Machinedrum album is cool. Love the style they have with all the old UK Garage samples. Brings me back to my school days. But their sound is pretty unique and I like how it takes a few listens to get hold of the drum arrangements etc.

I also liked the Om Unit album 'Threads' that came out recently.

Not that you likely care, but here are some things I wrote about some of the albums/acts I've suggested.

I liked amongst other things this year:

Bonobo - The North Borders

James Blake - Overgrown

Nightmares on Wax - Feelin' Good

Moderat - II

and not strictly albums but

Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Bubblers vol. 10

and Bonobo's mix from the Late night Tales series

I think 2012 had some better offerings to be honest but maybe I'm just getting more picky as I age.

We have a very similar taste in Music Limehouse.

Saw James Blake at Festival NUmber 6 and have to say he was brilliant.

Another shout for AM, brilliant album, the production of which brings much more maturity to the music.

If I had to name one, it would have to be Corsicana Lemonade, by White Denim.

Thanks to this thread I've been trying to broaden my musical horizons. I have to agree Corsica Lemonade is a good call and presently enjoying Two Door Cinema Clubs Beacon.

Have to say Beady Eyes BE was dissapointing and don't even get me started on AM. Such a dissapointment, imo.

I thought I'd try a bit of Carcass but switched off 5 seconds into Thrashers Abbatoir - Life's too short!

Surprised there's no mention of Johnny Marrs The Messenger. Well worth a listen.

Also, does anybody know if Modern Faces will ever release an album. I've liked all the tracks I've found on You Tube but can't actually find much info about the band - they don't even have a Wiki page!

Sorry Brian didn't come back to this thread for a while, missed your question.

They're hugely popular but played 'special' gigs - next summer they're back and playing at Earls Court. It's part of their promotion for the new album. I prefer seeing them in less cavernous venues - great in Ally Pally, they were too quiet in Hyde Park. The Roundhouse is one of my favourite venues in London, never overly crowded, a good view almost wherever you are, and a great building too.

Never been to the Roundhouse. Sounds like a great venue and a great place to see the band. Nice one!

Two Door Cinema Club are excellent. Love their (guitar) sound. Prefer Tourist History but both albums are great. Let's hope they can keep it up with their 3rd album release in 2015!

Any other recomendations for similar styled bands appreciated....

True.

Tonight a slightly quieter place: Union Chapel in Islington for west London's Magic Numbers. Going with a group, and we have one spare, if anyone's interested.
