Match Thread Scunthorpe on 19:02 - Aug 14 by dawlishdale | Match was not the best, and after a decent start, we seemed to run out of attacking ideas until Odoh came on. We really, really missed Ollies tenacity in midfield and Grant's skill. No change from Done...he really should be able to hold the line better, and it cost us several promising attacks when he needs to be better. The return of EOC steadied us down significantly in defence, but overall, I thought it was two bang average teams slugging it out without much firepower between them. The referee was my mom, letting play flow whenever possible. Scoreboard looks really good. Can't believe someone is moaning about it !! Had friends stuck outside in long queues well after kick off time. Predictable that there are several annoyed about it, but having spent a small fortune on the system; we are stuck with it. Must say; I found it very easy and was in the ground quicker than normal. Not keen on idiots with flares. it cost us all our momentum last week, and there were 2 from them today , plus one from our very own idiot of the year contender, who then showed himself up on being chucked out. Hopefully, a ban will ensue. Think we can and will play much better, RS is still getting to know the team, and them him. I think FGR will be a much tougher test on Tuesday. #upthedalenotforsale. On the scoreboard, go in the Sandy or the last block of the main stand next to it & see if you have the same opinion.. not the score.. team sheet as an example..

Match Thread Scunthorpe on 21:54 - Aug 14 with 2810 views | EllDale | I must confess I was a bit bewildered trying to get into the Sandy. Presented the bar code twice and was given the green light but the turnstile wouldn’t budge. It was a case of third time lucky but it must have been frustrating for anyone behind me. On the pitch I thought we were really neat and first to every loose ball in the first half and looked dangerous. Really liked the marauding O’Keeffe for the first 40 minutes but he, like a few others, went completely off the boil in the second half. My MOM would have been Done or O’Connell who was impeccable. Really impressed by the way that he cajoled, mentored, advised, marshalled Taylor and Graham throughout the first half. Superb captaincy. I only realised in the bar before the game that the last time that we played Scunthorpe in the opening home game of the season we went onto be promoted. That was 53 years ago mind you. Finally a massive shout out to TVOS. Brilliant read as usual.

Cheers. Re. your Scunthorpe fact, we also played them in the opening home game in 1980/81 and 2017/18.

Match Thread Scunthorpe on 18:21 - Aug 14 by blackdogblue | I agree with that D.A, I was pretty gobsmacked with Newby MOM tbh.. IMHO I thought Matty Done deserved it, a lot of good play down the left & was involved a lot in the game overall & full of energy.. Hopefully he will go on & be the player he was last time we got promoted from Lge 2.. On the game.. nice to see a more attacking & playing forwards style, shame it didn't end in a home win as can't remember the last time I saw one.. On a different subject.. Flares!!! Scunny through 2 on the pitch & for some reason the stewards just stood & looked at them unless it is a new safety rule?? Talking of which, some bellend let one off in the yoof corner of the Pearl Street Stand & then decided to throw it on the pitch & was ejected... Should be banned... & Late in the game, seemed like it was kicking off in one of the exits between a few people.. WTF ?? |
The bellends were scuffling with the police on Sandy Lane after the game. We need more fans, just not that sort. Interesting to see a few lads speaking in Czech or Polish near us.....hope they enjoyed it. Great to be back in the COA. Got there 40 minutes before kick off and there were long enough queues then for the new card system. Because of the gaps between swipes it is a lot slower than the old turnstiles and it would make sense to open the extra turnstiles. But we'll all get used to it. Thought Scunny defended well and probably came for a point and we lacked a bit of bite. Given the experience we have lost we knew it would be a rebuilding job. The new signings all seemed to have a bit about them. Let see whether a few changes are made on Tuesday.
Match Thread Scunthorpe on 22:55 - Aug 14 with 2617 views | EllDale | There was one other thing that I forgot to mention. I know it’s difficult to assess fully from the Sandy but in the first half we seemed keener to get to the byline and get crosses in. I thought O’Keeffe looked really incisive. After the break we seemed to have too many players wanting to crab across the pitch, particularly Newby and Dooley when he came on. Is this a throwback to indoctrination from the previous manager? Whatever reason we certainly came down to their level in the second period.

Thought we lacked proper width, needed a touchline hugging winger i thought ,who would have made the three at the back for them think twice and maybe would have pulled them out of position and left space in the middle of defence.

Match Thread Scunthorpe on 10:20 - Aug 15 with 2140 views | DaleiLama | Just glad to be back really - 526 days was too long away. Great to see lots of familiar faces again. 5 new-boys in Saturdays team vs 3 against Harrogate yet we played better overall and Robbie got his 1st point as Dale boss. Certainly on first half showing we arguably deserved more. Improvement from game 1 to 2 evident though and if we can just add goals we could have a decent season to look forward to. Would have liked to see Odoh on fron the start but O'Keefe and Doney gave us a threat going down the flanks in the first half and Bees might have put one of his chances away on another day. If we can get 3 points on Tuesday it will probably help everyone settle down a bit more but another draw and Robbie getting another 90 mins to see what he's working with in a competitive setting will be invaluable. Up the dale, down the ale NOT FOR SALE.

The scoreboard looked fine from my vantage in the Sandy. Your comments about it are ungracious.
Match Thread Scunthorpe on 11:13 - Aug 15 with 2011 views | EllDale | Having watched the highlights We should definitely have scored at least one and possibly two goals in that first half. Beesley perhaps with the diving header which was agonisingly close but Cashman should have broken the net.

!955/56 season, I recall Dale played Scunny opening game of the season. They were called Scunthorpe and Lindsey then. Dale won 3-2,Scunny had a white haired half back playing for them called Alan Bushby who, a couple of years later, played for Dale.
Match Thread Scunthorpe on 12:02 - Aug 15 with 1897 views | Shun | One pleasing thing I’ll mention is that there were a few concerned voices after the fans’ forum due to Stockdale’s comments about tactics. He implied we’ll play the same formation every game. Yet here we are two games in and we’ve had two different formations. It’s nice to see we’ll adapt based on how best to beat the opposition.

Not sure which game you're thinking of, but we were away at Grimsby on the opening day of that season. We beat Scunthorpe 3-2 at home in October 1955. Bushby played, so maybe you mean that game. My reply to EllDale was with reference to him saying 1968/69 was the 'last time'.
