Euros - Table B 09:22 - Jun 20 with 5112 views | Kensal_Ranger | Question; Could anyone explain why, currently, Table B should have Russia in 2nd place above Finland in 3rd when Russia has an inferior goal difference? Both BBC and Sky sites showing this...
Euros - Table B on 09:27 - Jun 20 with 4408 views | Northernr | Presumably they’re going on head to head record primarily, abs goal difference second? That’s a guess.

Euros - Table B on 09:39 - Jun 20 with 4354 views | denhamhoop2 | In all UEFA tournaments if 2 sides are level on points head to head counts first same if 3 teams are level basically would discount results against the other team in a 4 team group. Then goal difference if it's level on this

I think I read that on EUFA's site. On that basis, if England loose to Czeck, they will still be 2nd if Scotland and Croatia is a draw, or if Croatia win, as England beat them. If Scotland win both, UK teams will be both on 4 points, and as we drew our game its goal difference, then goals scored that decides. After that if teams are level it gets complicated, penalties?, numbers of cards or EUFA ranking may decide it.

On Wiki it says it is Euro 2020 Qualification ranking. England are above each of Croatia, Czeck and Scotland in that.

If I remember correctly this happened in '90 with Ireland and Holland finishing level on points, GD and GS 2nd and 3rd behind England. They drew lots to sort them out but both went through as one was one of the best 3rd placed teams. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

True. The most boring group ever. In any sport. On any planet. We got lucky, being awarded second and getting Romania, the Dutch got their arch rivals West Germany and went out to them.

I remember the farce when they used discipline as a decoder in the last world cup, hopefully they don't do that again. Was it Japan that just stayed in second gear because they realized that it was more important for them not to be booked than it was for them to score?

The most boring group from the most boring World Cup ever. A definition of torture would be being made to watch the full 90 minutes of the England/Republic of Ireland game again.

Which was a carnival on e's and whizz compared to Ireland v Egypt! Ireland drew four games in 1990, lost one, scored two goals, conceded two goals, got to the World Cup Quarter Final and won....no game!

Was it a boring World Cup, though? I loved England's games, and Cameroon were brilliant. I don't remember much else!

I think it was, the England/Cameroon QF excepted. The lowest goals per game ratio of any World Cup ever which still stands. It was the nadir of the backpass to the goalkeeper which was rife during the tournament and ended up with the law being changed the following year. A dreadful Argentina playing for penalties from the start of every knockout game reaching it's nadir when they played Yugoslavia in the QFs who were also playing for penalties. The tournament got the dog of a final it deserved, probably only rivalled by the '94 final as the worst ever. I've said it before and say it again, English people's memories of that World Cup are clouded by Nessun Dorma, Gazza's tears and England actually doing well in a World Cup for a change.

Yeah the group games were absolute rubbish, the England v Ireland game being particularly bad. England just about managed to beat Egypt 1-0 to come top, at one stage it was looking like all 4 teams finishing on the same points and drawing lots to see who went through. And the backpassing in the tournament was ridiculous, thank the lord that law was changed. Then England got completely outplayed by Belgium only for David Platt to score that brilliant winner at the end of extra time (absolute scenes in our living room) and then of course the Cameroon game which was one of the great nights. The pub were were in absolutely went off after that and celebrations continued outside long after closing time. The irony is England's best performance was v the Germans in the semi, as they had looked unstoppable until then and England very nearly beat them. When Lineker scored I genuinely believed we were going to win the thing, the only time I've ever felt that. Watched it at Gatwick as was flying to Ibiza with an ex GF that night. Was devastated at the end and then got stuck next to two Germans on the plane because we checked in late and couldn't sit together! I must admit waking up in Ibiza the next morning and not in what would have been a very depressed England was rather nice. As is typical in holiday hotels, there were a lot of Germans in our hotel. The day of the final they were all watching it and I was in the bar when they scored the winner. They just politely clapped ffs! I remember thinking this is wasted on these passionless people. Later that night a group of maybe 30 or 40 Germans with flags etc were walking around San Antonio celebrating. They came up the main road where all the pubs/bars are and hundreds of English came out and blocked the street. A tense stand off ensued for a while with the local police observing, batons ready. I was bracing for it all to kick off and mentioning to GF how we might get out of the way if it did. The Germans eventually decided to turn around and head back from whence they came, probably wise. Bobby Robson got a huge amount of credit for that tournament, but for me he got lucky. England should have been knocked out by Belgium and potentially Cameroon also. Was forced into changing to the sweeper system, rather than doing it as a tactical master stroke, which ended up working out quite well.

Euros - Table B on 17:19 - Jun 22 with 2869 views | TGRRRSSS | First world cup (or any tournament really) I can remember though much is fuzzy or based more on the memories and repeats of certain bits since. However didnt England have 2 goals disallowed against the Dutch? Likewise I don't remember much at all of the Belgium game (PLatt aside) but again didnt England have a goal ruled out? I don't remember the Belgians battering England, I do remember Cameroon playing well however and rather unfortunate not go to 2 ahead Was it 2-1 to Cameroon at HT? Just as well the back pass rule went, can you imagine that Swansalona side???

Cameroon were 2-1 up with about 15 mins left, we were crap in most matches apart from the semi final that year but managed to find a way to win. The Belgium game was dire, both sides hit the post I think. First tournament I remember is 1982 when there was a second group phase, we drew both games and went out without losing a game although I was obsessed with the Brazil team that summer, they were unreal.
Euros - Table B on 17:43 - Jun 22 with 2823 views | TGRRRSSS | I think 98 was the first WC where they moved to the straightforward 2 in 2 out routine, that seems fairest and gives more excitement, albeit with some weaker teams such as Panama last time out in England's group. Finding a way to win despite being crap, is important, probably the Germans were the best team, albeit I think the final was terrible, from the little I remember. Odd when seeing clips of England Semi with WG that there's loads of available space, no sell outs at that time. Asume you could in theory have bought a ticket on the day.

In fairness it had been a long time since we'd done anything in a Tournament really. 86 was promising but games were in the middle of the night so never really took off the way it did in 1990. The games were not great but the feeling and excitement was like nothing I'd experienced before. Euro 96 was another level up from that
