3rd runway at heathrow on 07:47 - Jun 25 by RangersDave
For some reason, when i typed my original post here , due to the name of the airport the site blocked me posting it, so i'll be a bit canny here with this one....
i suggest.......woodbridge in Suffolk.
Its anout an hour at present out of london, planes can come in over the sea, and it has a neighbor airfield within throwing distance. Both have long runways which will need upgrading, plus theres plenty of room between them for terminals and 3rd and 4th runways to be built with ease, plus room for expansion.
then remove heathrow from the map, and turn it into a lovely green space. as far as i can see, the issue isnt about the need for a 3rd runway, but the need for the money men to make yet more money.
take a look on google earth. its a pretty perfect solution.
You've obviously never used the A12. Horrible road. Ipswich has OK rail connections to London although probably still too far for a new airport, but the poor road link makes it a non-starter. And there isn't enough density of population in a 50 mile radius.

That sounds similar to Manston in Kent, which could've been made easily accessible by extending HS1 out there. I'm not sure what's happening with Manston now, I think they were planning to turn it into something like an industrial estate/housing or maybe both.
I recently talked to someone working on Manston. It was bought by I think a German company who had a chief exec who thought buying small airports was the way to go- but he died the project lost momentum and it is now mothballed. Manston is a possible solution that has not been properly looked at IMHO

Cost benefit analysis time...
Pros: More money to Britain, a superior country.
Cons: A bit more noise for a few people.
Yeah, that's a really tough decision all right.
'Cost benefit analysis time...

How on earth did you get access to the actual cost/benefit model the government used to inform its policy? I think what you wrote *is* the actual analysis.
Building the third runway is yet another example of 20th century thinking for a 21st century world.

I think Manston is too far out in the middle of nowhere. It's a not got great road links, A2 and A299 are both 2 lanes and often very busy as it is. There is a rail line nearby but the time to London is still 1hr 30min.
I think if you were to develop an airport in Kent you'd be better off putting it out at grain/kingsnorth. Join it up with a new road out there joining in to the lower thames crossing so it can service Kent and Essesx. Add to that a high speed rail line to Ebbsfleet and you can be in London in 40 min tops, Crossrail may even get extended to Ebbsfleet as well. Take traffic off the M25 trying to get to Gatwick/Heathrow (as would Manston)

Over the years I have done about 130 odd airports around the planet and it's been noticeable how many airports are being built further away from the city centre. Narita (Tokyo) for example, is about an hour away and has fast and efficient links to/from. And that is the key; super efficient transport links in/out to the airport.
I fly in/out of LHR about six times a year and depending on when you go it's like wading through treacle; I just don't see how it's going to improve with more traffic and another runway.
However, that is not the issue and apologies, but I have forgotten who brought up the issue of air congestion, but they are bang on!
Mrs PH and I had a year back in London and lived in Battersea for a year. As regular as clockwork, at around 5am, the first flights would come in every 30 seconds until 11pmish if memory serves. Even that far from LHR, one could pick off the plane's numbers with ease. Then you throw in planes looping in over the Thames toward LCY and even the helicopters landing at a helipad close to us, and it was deafening as it was polluting. And now they are going to add to it!!!!
Why LGW was not chosen I don't know. It just made sense to even out the traffic better for those living in London. These days I avoid so much news, but I had the misfortune to catch professional-c..t Piers Morgan on QT a while back, advocating LHR expansion so that it would keep LHR as a primary international airport. What a complete tit of a man he is - it's only going to be a bloody mess and make the lives of millions of people more dangerous and lessen the quality to boot.
The danger element is potentially exacerbated if the wish of a number of previous governments to nationalise NATS happens. Such a step is madness on top of the soon-to-be congested skies over west London.
I go to every london airport several times a week (Luton less often thank Fck ) .
IMO opinion Gatwick are incapable of managing big projects . North Terminal refurb ran way way over , the bogs took em 9 months to do , leaking p@ss everywhere after a week .

Turn Oxford Airport into an International Hub. Widen the A34 and a direct road to the terminals from Kidlington. There are very few homes near it, a lot of business parks etc. and a ton of space for future expansion if required. Just make sure none of the flight paths are over Blenheim Palace or you'll upset the country's ruling classes.
The grass is always greener.

Quite a few of Labour,s M.P,S have very little moral fibre! The Labour leadership should have made them vote against Heathrow expansion! I feel let down by the party ive supported all my life!

Labour have given the majority of people what they want. More people in favour than against apparently. I appreciate this is an old poll.
Did you lobby your local MP by any chance?
People happy to complain about their MP (of any party) but don’t want to excercise their democratic right. Telling me I’m a shit socialist on a QPR forum isn’t going to get your interests very far but writing a letter to your elected representative might.

No NW third runway at LHR; extend the two existing runways over the M25 to create four runways. Add a sixth terminal in between and stick to the toast rack layout.
