James Ward Prowse Future At West Ham Said To Be Uncertain
Thursday, 6th Jun 2024 21:10

News is coming out of London suggesting that James Ward Prowse could be on his way out of the London Stadium less than a year after joining the Hammers from Southampton last August.

Saints supporters were speculating over the past week that two prodigal sons could be returning to St Mary's in the shape of Danny Ings & Adam Lallana.

Now there could well be the scenario where a third ex Saint could make a return to Southampton.

givemesport.com are claiming that new West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui has been making his plans for next season and James Ward Prowse does not fit the blueprint.

They go on to suggest that West Ham are trying to arouse interest in him with the hope of offloading him this window.

That could end in the intriguing proposition that he could make a swift return to St Mary's, whether that would be a permanent deal, this would probably best suit the Hammers or another loan deal between the two clubs, as was the case with Flynn Downes.

Last August JWP cost West Ham £30 million pounds and although the season did not see him be an outstanding member of the squad as he often was at St Mary's, he still started 34 Premier League games for the Hammers, came off the bench on another 3 occasions, with the only game he actually missed coming before his transfer was completed.

He would score 7 goals and provide 7 assists, but most of both of these came in the first half of the season.

His value has dropped by about 10%, but would Saints be willing to fork out something around £25 million, for the return of a players who will turn 30 in November.

I would suggest the answer might be no, but a loan deal could be done, JWP's age is against most clubs who would be interested paying such a large fee, add to that his wages at West Ham, it might be that a loan move might be on the cards and perhaps that might be to St Mary's

Modern transfers mean they probably still owe us 2/3 or 3/4 of the fee, does that mean a deal could be done without any outlay?

I think that would mean we could still recognise the profit on the sale last year for PSR, but would show a transfer fee now spread over whatever contract length he had with us.

Tough one, would be good to have him back in many ways but getting bit silly with ex players.

Can’t see this one happening.

Would rather JWP than Lallana. With Stu Armstrong going JWP could fit that role, especially if Downes can be secured and be the defensive midfielder allowing JWP to play further forward. The main issue in his last season for us was we had sold Romeu and JWP was forced to play deeper which is not his strong area.

Please don't let this be another season where we make plenty of signings but not where we need them. Get Downes in, or a player in the same mould. Another striker (not Ings) a CB & FB. Once we have filled the real need we can build on the peripheral!

Sorry WestSussexSaint, JWP could never fill SA's role. JWP has never carried the ball forward and commit defenders.
Our priority should be to secure FD's services. He is a key figure for us next season if we can get him in.....

Onetowatch. I’m not suggesting that JWP is the same type of player as Armstrong but he is a better player as an advanced midfielder rather than defensive one. Hence I agree the priority is Downes but if Downes can be secured and there is a deal for JWP that works then I would take him in a heartbeat over Lallana would also be in that number 8 role.

Fit as a fiddle & class act, suspect he could play to 35/36 no problem. He's the only one of three we should even consider getting back. If we can get him at a knockdown price, a no brainer.

We should obviously pull out all the stops to get FD, unless we can get an upgrade, given that we can now offer PL wages and are a more attractive club for any potential signing.

After all that the club did for him, he wasn't even willing to give us one season in the championship to try and get us back up.

Remarkable lack of loyalty. Good riddance.

We need to get Downes as priority, but JWP would definitely help us survive if the money is right.

Also, JWP did show us loyalty by staying for years when he was not even a regular and there was interest from among others Fulham if memory serves us correctly.

I would even be looking at Target as an option for LB.

Much better getting know quantities than taking gambles with serious cash like with Kamaldeen, Carillo, Big Paul etc. that hardly work out.
