Surprised this hasn't made the transition over.

I'll start, storming through 'Do The Birds Still Sing In Hell?' at the moment, a story about a POW in WW2 who escaped (and returned) over 200 times to have an affair with a German interpretor. Slight love story combined with a harrowing account of POW life.

Heard both positive/negative reviews but am enjoying it at the moment.

Post yours!

Just read a review of a new biography of Cyril Smith. Looks like a good read. Another disgraceful episode in the history of mankind and, like the case of Saville, an example of how the authorities and the press have covered up for a celebrity paedophile. The Lib Dem leadership don't come out of it well either... and that Clegg.

Anybody read the game of throne books?

I'm a fan of the TV series, but don't think I could hack the books if they were quite heavy.

When I read them the 4th book had just come out, what I can remember was that it was similar to others in the genre

Tried to get through the first book on three separate occasions. Some people rave mad about it, but I can only get a certain way into it before I just give up through sheer boredom. As said, can't really distinguish it from anything else in that genre, which isn't my interest.

The Wolf of Wall Street book is a light and enjoyable read for me at the moment.

Agreed. Game of Thrones books are enjoyable if you are in to that sort of thing, but also hard-going. There's a lot of character development with not much else happening for large chunks of the books, so you do need to stick at them. Well worth it imo, but I can imagine it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Read all the ones so far published. The last one was fantastic, but the 4th one is a real slog.

GRRM is a fantastic writer of characters and setting, but he needs an editor to tidy up his narrative arcs. It's interesting that the TV writers seem to do a better job of structuring than the books.

Finished off The Emperor Series and The Conqueror Series. Both by Conn Iggulden about Julius Caesar and Genghis Khan.

Just started reading Homicide by David Simon (man behind The Wire).

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

'My Favourite Year' a collection of football stories edited by Nick Hornby which I think I got after seeing it recommended on this thread on the old site.

Absolutely brilliant so far.

I loved that as well, Clase. I rampaged through it in a couple of days, brilliant read.

I'm on this at the minute. I read it years ago and it caught my eye on the shelf again and I've dived back in. I don't know how much you know about Wyndham Lewis, Clase, but given your recent interest in The Great War I think you'd find him fascinating.

I never have and likely never will enjoy reading. I'm not sure why. The last thing I read for 'pleasure' was Chris Jericho's latest autobiography months ago because I had 10 hours of train journey time to fill. That's about it, excluding the obligatory text books during school/college/uni time.

Thoroughly enjoyed "The Sex Lives of Siamese Twins" by Irvine Welsh. I have read all of his books, but this is the first time he has written a fictional piece based in America. Dark and grimy as you would expect but the sense of humor in this one is far more obvious.

Very good.
