According to a tweet on the official Glentoran twitter account he has died this morning. Dreadful news if true, trying to find further confirmation

Legend is used too often without merit but not in Macca's case. Gone too soon. Get busy livin' guys...

RIP Alan McDonald

This is really sad news. My thoughts are with his family right now. Whenever I think of the days I started following the Rs he's the first player I think of.
RIP

Bloody hell.....

This is a geniune choker. He was a hero for QPR. Never gave less that everything. Even when as an goalkeeper for Swindon against us at Loftus Road.

that header at Stamford Bridge in 1986.
His shock at an own goal against Leeds in 1994.
His battles with Mark Hughes
Ready to take on the world at Wembley v England!
Ready to kill the lino at St James Park in 1993.

Jesus.

here's to Big Mac. RIP.

I'm going to have a drink.

Awful news for such a young fella.

The term legend is too easily used these days but Macca was a real Rangers legend.

RIP Big Man, you will never be forgotten.

Very sad news... was the Macca era when i was most regular down the Bush and really fell in love with the Hoops as a boy.. A real QPR man, 400 games, and as said by many a real legend..

Those days in the late 80s early 90s we had some blinders of that ilk with Mark Dennis, Gavin Maguire etc.... But, that era will always be summed up for me with that duo Maddix and Macca.

We used to go to raves and all do "the Macca dance" with your thumbs up at elbow level as per his running style.

RIP big fella.
You live on long in memory and legend.

Typed with a tear in either eye

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

I started supporting QPR right about the same time he left, so he's from "before my time". Nevertheless, I have always read great things about the man and I've always appreciated his status as a true leader and QPR legend.

RIP.

RIP Macca... Utterly devastated by this news. First Captain I ever saw in the Hoops, and set the bar for every Captain since.

Rest in peace. A true QPR legend.

Gutted about this. A true great of our club back in the days when we were really good. A true leader and captain as well, never less than 100%, never backed out of a header or tackle. Can't believe he's died really. Went to the Q&A session at O'Donoghues a.k.a. Swakeleys a few years ago and he looked as fit as a flea, looked like he could still have turned out for us! That night he came across as a modest bloke, very down to earth, took his job seriously but also had lots of good stories. I'm proud to say that I got my picture taken with him that night and that photo has been on the wall in the spare bedroom ever since!
RIP Macca.
