There were a lot of people saying the same thing when we sold Darnell Furlong to West Brom. "£1.5m? I'll drive him there myself" - 5 managers have used 7 different players at right back since then and we're now reliant on a centre back by trade to play there.

It's not as easy as just 'get a replacement"

Darnell was the last decent right back that we’ve had. And Jimmy has been the best in that position since then despite it not being where he’s always played before.

I find this thinking of “football” as only being when you have the ball at your feet.

95% of a game of footballer, all but one footballer on the pitch do not have the ball at their feet.

Football is as much what you do without the ball as with it. Simply ignoring that part of the game is breathtakingly short sighted.

We struggled at the start of this season precisely because we had an unbalanced side with too many players who were technically good with the ball at their feet but useless without it.

We corrected that balance and went on a phenomenal run.

As I have said many times, it’s not good having ballers if you can’t win tackles…you never get them the ball and have to play out from the keeper and you’ll never be winning possession higher up the pitch.

Running, closing down pace, tracking runners, tackling, competing for loose balls…it’s all critical “football” just like touch, passing, crossing, and shooting are. You need a balance. The former is what makes formations and tactics work. Obviously you’d like every player to do all of those things really well, but that is naive. Hardly anyone in world football does it all, and any close only play for the top top clubs.

Field, Smyth, Cook, and Dunne are very solid, reliable players at this level. It is ludicrous for a club of our budget to want to move them on UNLESS we get big offers for them or they run their contracts down.

I agree with all of that, and I value heart and work-rate above all traits.

But I also agree with Wilkins's point, though I wouldn't be as vehement about it maybe. There's only one ball and we need it to score and to make sure the oppo don't score. We need players who can control it, and control possession of it.

I'm just not sure we can afford players who can do that and who also have heart and work-rate.

The issue being as stated if that is the case, don't sell your other right back, leave yourself with just a loan player in that position and so many injury prone centre backs where again you losing an ever present player who like others have said, has been clear POTY so far and given you years of great service.

But losing him now, would be criminal, as its like saying we don't care about outside chance of playoffs as we prepared to let him go without replacing him.Thats where it would be ZERO AMBITION.

Yes there is also the scenario, that they start Tuesday game with him announcing his extended contract, but again, saying he is injured, allowing the speculation, and then doing that STINKS.

Wonder how many games this groin injury keeps him out for.

And the bloke just lost his dad and played out of his skin for us.

I don't like what QPR have done here, whatever way it pans out.

What's the difference between finishing 13th & 16th and is it a lack of ambition or realising that it's very difficult to get value in the January transfer window and that we need to be pragmatic.

It's a difficult one and in an ideal world we would replace Dunne now but I can see why they won't .

End of the day if he won't sign a contract then we can't allow him to go on a free in the summer

Was talking about outside chance of playoffs not 13th

Anyway I am Dunne with this as he clearly isn't leaving and the club will announce his extended contract on Tuesday...

Poll: Where will we finish next season ???

Dunne off? on 11:33 - Feb 2 with 2521 viewsdavman

If (when?) he goes, this'll be another one of those transfers that benefits nothing but the players' bank balance. Clive has called it - he will get 10-15 appearances for the Blades this season, then they'll get the Prem Cash and realise that they can now afford better and then will push Jimmy back to the Championship with Leicester or Soton either on loan or on a permanent.

Jimmy will justify all of this to himself that "it isn't about the money, its about a chance to play at the top level" as he HAS to believe that for himself. BUT, it IS about the money as that is the only thing that will be different in 2-3 years' time.

Shame, but this is football.

Whatever you all think about Chair and all your crap about him "holding on to it for too long" and being "atrocious", there is a player that WANTS to be here. Do you think they have offered Chair millions more than they have offered Jimmy? Doubtful, but Illy signed and is staying. If Jimmy wants us to believe how much he loves the club, I have little doubt that there is a reasonable offer on the table. Yes, he could get more elsewhere, but if he truly WANTS to stay, he can.

I doubt that he will though, sadly.

Can we go out yet?

For sure he would get more money, and most people would take that even if they liked where they worked and Thier boss, especially if it potentially set you up for life, or a good way there.

But no-one knows if he would play or not in the Prem if they got promoted. He'll likely never have a better chance. And at the end of the day Lumley and Manning have got appearances this season with not too dissimilar clubs so it's not impossible. Ian Evatt had a full season with Blackpool I think.

In his shoes I would 100% move - why wouldn't he?

He could of course be in negotiations to join someone , Sheffield United perhaps , in the summer and still be with us until May? Because of ongoing negotiations maybe he was left out yesterday but not because he is leaving in the next 48 hours?
Unlikely , but it might be the case .
Going for nothing is worse in my opinion

Dunne´s not Sheff Utd only option. Latest name linked is Rob Holding from Palace, another one is Darling from Swansea, but i guess Dunne is cheapest option.

Total guess, but isn't that likely to be Sheff Utd leaking some names out so we run scared from keeping on driving the price up?

Funny though, if we did manage to get £2m+ I wonder if Nourry would be tempted to break his rules on not revealing fees?

I'm always quite surprised by how we seem to think that the grass is so green at QPR and that any player should feel an over-riding desire to stay here. I'm sure Sheff Utd, Boro, Swansea, Cardiff and any other Championship team that players from QPR have gone to recently have just as slick set-ups with good camaraderie, facilities, player-fan relations etc etc. I know there are exceptions but you can generally count on one hand the number of players who we have bought who have stayed with us out of an affiliation to the club.

The vast majority thought that selling Furlong for £1.5m and signing Todd Kane on a free was great business. One of those is now playing in the National League, whilst the other would have been our captain the past few years.

It's actually incredible how often people say "we can replace him with better" without any consideration of finances or opportunities or even squad chemistry. It's one of a kind with "sign a striker".

Looking at one of their forums they seem to think they are looking to sign a commanding centre back which is not what Dunne will give them.
Also saw (on FB so who knows) that we are holding out for £3m and Sheff Utd are now looking elsewhere.
Worse case scenario for us is he isn’t sold in the next 24 hours, doesn’t sign a new contract and leaves for nothing end of season.

Ultimately if they sell him fine, but there is no way they should be selling him and replacing him with Ashby for the rest of the season. That would tell me Nourry is just Les with a fancy degree.

£2m+ for someone who has less than 6 months less on their contract just seems pricey to me, and I'm a little surprised that if we've been offered £2m in those circumstances, we haven't taken it. Guess I'm looking at the £2.5m we took for Sincs who is much younger, a goalscorer and had a year left.

Just feel there's something here that we aren't party to.

I thought we missed him most going forward. Edwards defended well but offers nothing over the half way line. JD is almost our leading scorer.

JD likely to score many more goals than Armstrong in a season.

One thing I think which has been entirely forgotten is that Jimmy lost his dad just a few months back. Many of us will have either experienced first hand, or seen someone else - a big personal loss like that being followed closely by big changes or challenging oneself. Who knows what he's ultimately thinking, but that could play a role in it.

Hope he stays, if he goes it will be sad but as said many times we'd be mad not to take 2m in the last 6 months of his contract.

More and more ‘reports’ suggesting Nourry now demanding £3m, which simply won’t happen.
Ballsy move . But could backfire as £2m shouldn’t be sniffed at in our current situation.

I do like the thought of taking the approach of ‘ if you are going to disrupt our season then you will have to pay for it ‘.

Just don’t think they’ll go for that and the risk of upsetting JD.
Don’t see Dunne downing tools or anything though . Just can’t see that

Maybe at set pieces although delivery was so poor not sure Dunne would have changed much.

I think Dunne is certainly better at right back but Edwards could easily fill in that role if we do sell him and I don't think it will hurt us that much

Good luck to him whatever he decides. He’s always been a 100% player and has improved beyond recognition this season. I think most forwards in the championship would hate to play against him.
