Meanwhile in London…. 20:08 - Nov 25 with 2866 views | Joesus_Of_Narbereth | A man has been arrested after an eight year old girl and a 34 year old man were shot at point blank range inside a car. There was also a 2 year old in the car who thankfully was unharmed. In a separate event four men have been arrested after another man was stabbed in tower hamlets.

Stay safe. | |

I'd say most Chinese cities are safer, due to harsh penalties for crime (and I wouldn't live there under that regime). I've made two multi-week visits to Wuhan in recent years and felt very safe. Even somewhere like Chinatown in Bangkok, which I have wandered around at night more than once, and is edgier than the usual tourist areas, seems safer to me than certain areas of London. But in truth I haven't been out in the night in those London areas in recent years.

I've done very little in Asia so cant compare. I've done quite a bit of European traveling so I suppose that's my frame of reference. Multi-weeks in Wuhan? You're not Patient Zero are you?
Meanwhile in London…. on 13:10 - Nov 29 with 1225 views | Joesus_Of_Narbereth | The big cities have always had an underbelly of crime and filth but it’s been exacerbated exponentially in the last few decades with the influx of drug, gun, knife and drill culture.

I was in Wuhan a year before the pandemic and then again last year. Also nearly got stranded in Thailand when the pandemic hit in March 2020 - got the last Thai air flight out bound for the UK. Heard some interesting snippets from local contacts in Wuhan, but no definitive account of whether the source for COVID-19 was the market or one of the two research centres.

Meanwhile in London…. on 08:22 - Dec 9 with 976 views | felixstowe_jack | Murder rates in UK per capita have pretty much remained constant at around 10 per million. For the last 50 years. Strangely they did spike ftom 2000 to 2003 reaching 18 per million before falling back to current level of 10 per million. By far the worst countries are the Carribean, South and Central America which make up 18 of the worst 20 countries together with South Africa and Nigeria. The UK is 147th and China is 174th in the world list

i'm sure you will find those rates are per 100, 000 not per million. Cuba being in the Caribbean has one of 4.2, less than half of ours

The figures are per million, as there are only around 700-800 murders per year in the UK (600-700 in England and Wales). The England and Wales rate for 2022 was 11.7, but - going back to the topic of the thread - the London rate was 15.1 per million. https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8224/#:~:text=The%20

We stayed in the Radisson Covent Gardens had food there when we arrived and that was the start of the big spend , went to see Les Misérables in the Solheim Theatre, Sky Gardens and then afternoon Tea in the Savoy, spending money like a lottery winner 4

The figures I have quoted are per MILLION. So yet again you are incorrect Cuba's rate per million are 50 and 75th highest in world and are 4 times higher than UKs and three times higher than London's Uk rate per million are 12 and 147th highest in world Russia's by the way is 82 per million 48th highest in the world.

It's mostly worked out per 100k, but I guess you have found something different We do quite well when compared to countries like Russia and the USA, but worse than most of Europe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

Some of the comments in the DM are downright racist. The offender is Asian heritage, but that doesn’t mean he’s an immigrant or a non british citizen, his family may have been here 80 plus years and he could be as British as half the uk. Whatever his nationally or status, crimes like this are completely unacceptable and he deserves a massive stretch at HMP’s pleasure, if he is a foreign national he needs to be on a plane out of here as soon as he’s done his time. Yes, some of the comments are beyond the pale, but what I was pointing to is the growing opinion among large sections of the population that the big ethnically-diverse cities are sites for increasing gang crime, including an epidemic of stabbings and shootings. Incidentally, the survey I referenced in an earlier post says that Birmingham is even less safe than London.

No doubt the mayor of London will get a knighthood for making London a safer city.
