The rare sight of early voting republicans could give fuel to these claims of ‘stolen election’ later on. *Trump voice* “We were in the lead, for the first few hours”

Overall, if you take the Selzer poll from Iowa - where Harris trumps Trump 47% to 44% - and impose this swing to the whole country, it could be a landslide. But there may be many silent Republicans not wishing to disclose themselves to the army of women voters Harris has at her disposal.

Some days it feels like Harris has it in the bag, other days it feels like a 2016 ere of overconfidence and poll failure.

One problem with America.
It’s full of Americans.

They are stupid enough to vote him back in.

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

Let’s face it, both candidates are pretty appalling. One an air head and the other just plain nasty. Makes the Starmer v Sunak battle almost seem appealing in hindsight… 😂

Not sure you can do a comparison of "they're both equally bad" with this one given one of the candidates actually ticks the boxes for being a genuine fascist (and has courted white supremacy).

Not to mention he's a convicted felon, been prosecuted in court for being a sex pest and is friends with Putin.

Must be honest though i've got a horrible feeling that whatever happens the outlook for america feels pretty bleak to me, if Trump wins and project 2025 comes into force then god help us, if he doesn't will him and his cult take it without violence? I'm not convinced.

Without doubt there is a lot to criticise with our political system.

However, what we do get right is that when we have a General Election the result ( apart from 2010 when a coalition was necessary) the result is known within hours and power is transferred relatively graciously .

Even in 2010 it was sorted within a couple of days without rancour or unpleasantness.

As for today’s election in the U S A. Trump is 4/7 to win and Harris 6/4. If the Bookies are correct it looks all over and we have another four years of a very unpleasant grifter to look forward to.

Nobody knows who will win, it's too tight. It might come down to the weather. Good weather might mean a big turnout which will help Harris, but the forecast is mixed.

If Trump wins, or comes close, then a lot of bad things might happen. But if he does then the single biggest reason will probably be immigration, which was also a major factor for Brexit and some of the recent elections in other European countries. Future years will see even more tensions around immigration due to military conflicts and climate change driving migration. Meanwhile developed nations like the UK will need to find ways to offset a declining workforce to keep the economy going. We live in interesting times.

The simple fact is the US could be on the verge of electing a convicted criminal who tried to overthrow their democratic system 4 years ago. More frightening is Trump losing and again refusing to accept the will of the people leading to chaos. I feel sorry for them.

Where did I say he was a better choice? Where?

From everything I have seen of her she has no substance at all . Maybe you’ve seen more compelling interviews than I have. Being a lawyer means little as far as I’m concerned.

In any event , whoever wins they are subject to constraints (made evident by the fact that a clearly senile person has been in office for the last 3 or so years) which is something of a comfort.

All rather depends on an individual’s definition of what or in this case who constitutes an airhead I suppose.

But Mark, you know how the system works, that today's puppetitions only take orders from Bilderberg, WEF, UN et al.

This is all theatre, those claiming Kamala is bright because she is a lawyer have clearly never watched her. A senile old man has apparently been running the USA for the last few years, it's a joke ,right? And the laugh is on those of us who take it seriously.

I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.

The reality is it's a choice between two poor candidates (again). The fact that one is really bad doesn't make the other a positive choice. The US has had 8 years of very poor presidential leadership and will have 4 more. As others have commented, the outcome of a narrow Trump loss is concerning given he will likely try to stir up trouble. Either way it's a depressing day.

Jellybaby, I’ve usually a lot of time for your views but can’t see where you are coming from with this post.

All I suggested was the U K electoral system and method of declaring a result is better than that undertaken in the U S A , quoted the odds and suggested Trump was a grifter.

It’s more the fact that how can anyone of any intelligence think Trump is a good choice to lead the US?
He is a criminal aside from anything else

Early returns don't always tell you the final result, but, having seen them, the bookies have all just made Trump a heavy odds-on favourite to win. About the only positive of that is he won't incite his supporters to start a violent insurrection. But, God knows what he will do in future as he is mentally unstable.

330m people in US and these were the best 2 people they could come up with !

Staggering that majority of US believe that Trump is fit and proper to run the US, He is unstable at best and a crook.

The only positive, is the markets will receive the news of a Trump win positively, Shares will rise.

It will be an interesting term. 60% of US debt matures in 5 years.

Just seen Farage out there, guessing there will be no MP Surgery today for people in Clacton ?

Melania will be happy as her Lawyers prepare a new Pre-nup.

Given this result and Trump's planned tariffs and threats to leave NATO I think it probably now becomes imperative we rejoin the EU in some fashion.

Obviously that will go down like a lead balloon to many in the country but the UK is sh*t out of options and not doing it will see our growth halve (an estimate given by The National Institute of Economic and Social Research the oldest independent economic institute in the UK) and leave us massively exposed to Putin.

What would be the benefits of re-joining the EU? The EU would no doubt make that extremely painful financially.

US will not leave NATO. He was just was just pressuring Europe top pay more of their share, and he probably had a point with the likes of Germany.

With North Korea developing weapons that can reach US mainland, with Russia and China help, it wouldn't make sense for US to leave now.

An open market to replace the trade that's lost from the US and a replacement for NATO.

It's really not got anything to do with feelings at this stage it's just pure economic security and defence security.

At the end of the day we're currently a small fairly irrelevant country and losing growth driven by imports of goods and services to the US is going to damage us hugely.

That's impossible. We had a great membership deal (negotiated by Thatcher) which we would never be re-offered and membership on standard terms would be unacceptable (e.g. mandatory Euro membership). So the only option is side deals of some kind without membership, but those have to be worse than full membership rights by definition and will be almost impossible to agree on the EU side.

In my book it was the wrong decision to leave, but now we've done it there will be no going back for many decades. Our only option is to build an economy independent of the EU. Unfortunately Labour have no idea how to do that.
