Paul Smyth is not the problem. He’s not in the top 5 problems with our side. Not even close.

Whether he should be a starter, a back up, or not at the club is a separate discussion.

Madsen
Andersen
Our full backs (when Dunne is not a RB)
Our centre forwards
The shape and system we are trying to play
Our lack of pace in the squad
Our lack of physicality in our squad
The end product of Saito and Dembele
Our record with Dunne at centre back instead of JCS
Colback’s lack of brain/suspension record
Varane’s lack of brain
Field’s weakness is passing forwards progressively
….just about all come before:
Smyth, as a substitute winger, and his end product.

Can I put you down as: undecided?

I am the president of the Paul Smyth fan club. Especially so when things aren’t going well. Never hides, always wants the ball, unarguably does his best even when his best isn’t that much. He’s pretty far down the list of problems in this squad. It’s easy enough to have a go at 2-0 down but he gave us something for half an hour that Saito and Andersen got nowhere close to for an hour and Dembele couldn’t manage in the second half.

The notion that 'gives a 100%' is some incredible attribute in a player is utter tosh - it should be seen as a basic effing non-negotiable given from 'every' player.

Smyth's inability to do the simple when he's often done the hard work is as much a failure as it is frustrating and merely because he ran very fast to get there isn't enough.

If a bloke is giving it his absolute all but is ultimately not delivering, then more often than not, it's on the club, not the player. Where it's on the player is when they suddenly stop doing the simple.

Smyth tries all the time and while I don't blame him, his return to QPR was symbolic of the self-created mess those above him have put us in.

Agreed you’d like to think it’s the most basic of basics but in the land of the 1.6 eyes the 1.99 eyes man is king.

I like him , never hides and trys to the best of his ability, he should not be targeted for stick imo. Plenty of others stand before him!!

Absolutely no-one's blaming him for yesterday's debacle, it's just a thread about he does people's heads in. Symptomatic yesterday was a long ball up do him and because he wasn't watching it, it hit him on the back of the head

Shit but local

I"m not saying he is our main problem, or he goes missing or anything other than that he drives me crazy. He can do half the job very well, but somehow hasn't learned the other half, no matter how fast, or committed or energetic, in fact all that makes him even more frustrating. His passing , his shooting, his clumsy attempts at winning a free kick, just seem inevitable after all the good work. It does my head in and I like the lad.

Right now half a job is better than no job at all.

Paul Smyth is not a lot different than most of our attacking players......they are all pretty average with the final ball. If they wasn't we would be scoring a lot more goals.

I would start him every week whilst we are playing as we are........when we start playing decent proper football then it will be time to look at other options.

This is the second - or maybe even third - thread dedicated to digging out Paul Smyth. If we had 11 Paul Smyth types pertinent to their relevant positions, we would be a damn sight higher up the table than we are now.

Add to that list:
Powder puff midfield
JCS' fitness
Lack of options when key players are missing

All are more pressing matters than Smyth, who at least tries, gets into decent positions, and offers some defensive protection. He just needs to work on his end product.

Paul Smyth is part of the problem. He's not good enough for this division. Simple as that.
Im not sure what the benchmark is ? . Cook ? Field.. Colback? Yes he tries hard , but he's not doing the bizzo. Not sure why some are giving him a pass.
Andersen and Madsen are struggling in this league. Its clear as day that teams are looking at us as lightweights and going all in. Even bringing in Colback means we have a hot head that will get a needless card. We've kinda snookered ourselves .
Back to basics. I think MC has got a bit carried away with last seasons turnaround and has jumped the gun. He needs to reel it all back in.

Smyth is no Dave Thomas but the minute the ball left Dave’s foot Givens, Bowles and Francis were dashing into the box with a fair idea where the ball go. When Smyth crosses the ball our strikers are are taken completely by surprise.

Strong and stable my arse.

11 Paul Smyths, you say Myke.....

I think it's a given in football that managers should not watch oompah loompah scenes from 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' before making team selections.
