Just seen that the main branch in town is to close in April. They have closed all the suburban branches and most market town branches, now its the turn of the large towns. Sad that a town the size of Rochdale won't have one of our main banks in situ.

It is sad, but an inevitability of online banking. Whenever i pass, there's no-one in there. The costs of staffing and maintaining a branch in such a central location must've become prohibitive
Other former bank buildings in the town centre have been converted into leisure outlets. The scope for further expansion must be reaching its limits, especially with the Medicine Tap closing. It remains to be seen what might become of the premises, but the substantial architecture needs to be utilised in a way which adds to the centre. Rochdale won't be alone with this issue
Maybe in time they will look at Bank Hubs in which a few banks offer facilities in the same place. Such an hub or two could work well in Rochdale centre. We are lucky in Rochdale that there are still plenty of fee free cash machines, many places have few or none, especially village locations.

Didn’t know the Medicine Tap was closing. Used to go in there before getting the bus to the COA from round the corner. Some money was spent refurbing it. Shame because it would have been real sitting outside there when the Town Hall is finished. All the banks closed in Elland where I live but a banking hub is due to open there in a couple of months. It’s run by LinkedIn or Linkedup (forget the actual name but they’re the people who operate the grouped ATMs). It’ll be staffed and will cater for customers with accounts at any of the banks in the scheme.

As you say, it's a shame they're closing just as footfall was likely to increase, and fwiw i don't buy their argument; suspect there may be other issues they don't mention. Was a great place to sit outside (in summer!) when the sun was shining down the Esplanade
Let's hope the refurb means it'll re-open as a place to eat/drink under different management

The food went downhill and for more price conscious customers you can buy similar drinks elsewhere, but cheaper.
The works and the reduced parking will also have contributed. There is a gap there if someone can make a go but it needs a point of different. What is its USP?

Pretty stiff competition from the Flying Horse just across the square too.
Are you staying up for Chiefs-Fins tonight? -30F windchill forecast ...... 3rd coldest game in NFL history. Bills might be getting lake snow for Steelers game too.
Its a stroke of genius to spend £18m on the Town Hall and not put a nanosecond of thought about the neighbouring amenities. What point is there in attempting to go anywhere near the town centre any more except to get drunk? No banks, no decent shops, just chains selling the same stuff you can buy online and which will pull out once the introductory low rents and rates expire. . Still, put the Council Tax up another 5%, the idiots will keep voting for the old LibLabContrick and the same clueless faces will keep taking their tax- free expenses.... And how long is it going to take to finish the Castleton bottleneck, the bit that was supposed to be finished in August last year? Another £2m wasted ....has anyone ever seen anyone riding a bike there? And next, its heading towards the Town centre, I can hardly wait for the work to begin near the Tesco lights and across Roch Valley Way, the delays will be epic and cost millions more. !

Similar useless works also due to start on Oldham Rd
I disagree about "not put a nanosecond of thought about the neighbouring amenities". The lack of facilities for anyone driving into town - and especially those with a disability - is entirely deliberate and no doubt took many years of study of "urban planning" or even better "Urban Planning with Sociology" to arrive at the point of such idiocy

I'll record it and watch it in the morning. It's an interesting round of games. Three domes, Tampa and then two really cold games. I'm not confident, although Miami having some many injuries might help. A game for Pacheco and the defense to shine, I hope!

There is a determination to get us out of our cars by simply making them impossible to go anywhere in them. I will buy a horse before I will start cycling or using public transport. They will be welding our doors shut next. Welcome to the People's Republic of Rochdale. The way we were.... is it really any better now?

Any chance of you jumping on the electric car gimmick 49th?
Just imagine instead you could sit in standstill traffic whilst safe in the knowledge you're being very "green"

Bills game shifted to Monday because of forecasted snow storm. They were offering folks $20 per hour to help shift snow in and around stadium…bring your own shovel.

Really nostalgic film though! Took me back!
Dont get me started on EVs... once it starts snowing, they will be abandoned where they stop. Heating full on, fan at full belt , heated seats full on, heated windscreens on, windscreen wipers full on, lights all on radio on, I doubt they will get from Rochdale to Manchester on a single charge. Dont get me wrong, my degree course main subject was Environmental Studies, but my concern was about the use of chemicals on the land (DDT in those days), venacular architecture and rare wild plants. The idea that CO2 will destroy the planet is as mad as the notion that EVs are somehow good for the environment, tell that one to the kids digging rare earth minerals with their hands not to mention the inevitable piles of old EV batteries than no one knows what to do with and the unrecycleable windmills and solar panels (14 of which I have on my roof.. so I am not entirely immune to the appeal of cheap energy). I like the idea of hydrogen ( Toyota) cars, they would be ideal in many ways but as with everything its an infrastructure problem. I think Toyota are going to build 1000s of Hydrogen stations all over Japan but I think they will struggle over here. Ultimately it boils down to politicians, but the vast majority are simply too thick and/ or too corrupt to sort out the good ideas from the downright stupid ones and so we end up paying for the lack of direction and decision. Its also worth noting that the resident idiots of Westminster have decided that mini nuclear reactors are a good idea and I agree, but then they screw it all up by asking Westinghouse (US) to get involved rather than backing the Rolls Royce designs, a decision that will probably cost UK jobs, RR profits and tons of export opportunities selling them all over the world. Its inexplicably stupid but about par for the course i am afraid.

So you are not 100% convinced we have this right then?......
Seriously I agree with you. The insane manner in which councils are trying to stop cars and wrecking their towns and businesses without any understanding of whether they have a good approach is shocking. For all the money councils have spent on cycle lanes, bus corridors, camera controlled streets, we could have insulated and modernised 10m homes. Now that would have made a difference given that our houses represent 20% of all C02 emmissions.
If RMBC (and any other council) want us to get out of cars and onto buses they need to make buses attractive. Very very cheap, very clean and very frequent. I have electric buses that run every 10 minutes near me into the city centre and I do use them. But I still use the car for most journeys. The council has no plan other than punishment. They have spent hundreds of millions on the town centre and shopping area (which I applaud) but it is pretty hard getting into and pout of due to the car park called John Street. They just don't see it.

All the recent refurbishments to the town hall / town centre have occurred through external funding; the council can take very little credit for any of it
Users of cars which qualify for Disability Badges are aghast at the lack of thought put into how they might access these refurbished facilities. The town hall etc. have all got wheelchair access but there's a woeful lack of parking close enough to allow someone with a disability to get there without assistance
When the new "traffic management" systems were installed at the top of John Street, it took several crashes and near misses before the system was altered to prevent them. Similar will happen at the former Sudden roundabout, which worked perfectly for many years before being destroyed and now further destruction is on the cards, with vehicles stationary for longer and not a single bicycle in sight for days on end

A big question mark hanging over electric buses is the length of time it takes to charge them and the required infrastucture's ability to provide electricity. Typically a large vehicle like a bus or truck is off the road for 10 hours being charged so you need more buses to cover the ones on charge, always assuming the grid is able to supply the amount of power required. Add on to that the extra weight which may require the reinforcement of bridges, more road damage, the extra particulates from the tyres and the risk of Lithium fires that seem to affect electric vehicles from time to time.
If you want some fun at the next election, try asking the candidates how much CO2 is in the atmosphere and how should there be.
. . Another interesting exercise is to check where the electricity we generate comes from. https://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/ the dials show the current situation and the graphs compare the major sources on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Today, wind is at nearly 30% supply but on other days its barely moving the dial. Gas turbines and nuclear supply most of the base-load with the gamut of other sources providing the rest. Then you have to consider the energy density required... you can't run heavy industry on windmills and solar, it simply does not provide power. Large vehicle chargers will also need to provide more energy density than the home or roadside chargers that cars might use. The cost of upgrading the National Grid and related infrastucture for an electric future would be huge, it would make HS2 look like pocket change.

Yup, just wait until one goes up in flames near a load of other electric buses, they will be left with just a huge hole in the ground... actually, I doubt they will be insurable before too long, so that will effectively be the end of that. You can't fix stupid you just have to let them find out the hard way, the problem being that its the taxpayers who foot the bills not the clowns getting allowances@ and probably brown envelopes. The venality of the psychopaths who purport to represent us must never be underestimated
