From some of his play with us I thought Clarke was going to be a very useful player, given some time to get the game experience he needed and bulk up a bit. Never understood why we and others were so quick to get rid.

That is good money and maybe also says that even a striker of his quality isn't wanted by a PL club.

That is good money and a good profit for them (minus Brighton's probable sell on) but even if Robins is given half that to spend on a replacement, are they going to replace those goals?

It's he's going for £9m you really need to ask what more Chair needs to do for a decent size fee.

He was written off by many fans on here based on about 20 minutes-worth of football. The 'get rid' brigade always shout the loudest and have the least patience. See also: Barbet, Joann; Impey, Andrew; Willock, Chris and many, many more.

Watford mate said he was one of the few positives in a dismal team. You’d like to think he’d be better than Balogun or at least fitter having managed 72 games in the last two years but I think Dunne can do that role fairly well and I’d rather use our meagre resources for a younger, quicker model. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I can't remember who it was against (possibly Bristol City H lost 1-0) but near the start of Clarke's spell with us he came on for the last quarter hour, played left, cut in from there several times, looked really dangerous... and then we never once used him like that again.

Disagree, was a passenger and looked completely lost in the majority of his appearances. As a loan player he has to come in and hit the ground running, he couldn't/didn't do that so we couldn't waste time on him developing someone else's player. He joined us for 19/20 and only 'came good' in 22/23. He was never going to be ours so waiting 3 seasons for him to develop was never an option for us.

Stoke City have made their first signing of the summer by bringing in Republic of Ireland international defender Enda Stevens following his departure from Sheffield United. The 32-year-old full-back has signed a one-year contract with the Potters. "Enda is a really strong addition," said technical director Ricky Martin. Well, your idea that 'we were never going to own him' doesn't make a lot of sense seeing as he ended up signing for a league one club.

I for one wasn't blaming the Club, but loans are and can be made permanent. They provide an opportunity which Sunderland seem to have taken with Clarke, apparently with some success. May well be that he would have been too expensive for us and Stoke.

2 years later. After another loan failure at a Championship club. When we loaned him there was no possibility of our owning him, just like Matt Smith from Citeh, and just like Smith he wasn't what we needed and it was pointless (literally) us using him. If he then had to drop to a League 1 club A) shows how much his stock had fallen and B) that it took him a number of years to improve. Years that, as a Spurs loanee, we could not have provided.

Other championship teams transfers on 12:38 - Jul 5 with 2959 views | kernowhoop | I have no idea why Clarke did not make the grade at QPR, but, there is one thing that we seldom seem to take account of when an otherwise promising player does not seem to 'fit'. It certainly applied at the lowly level of football where I played, years ago. That is, perhaps he was not popular with the other players? That definitely made a difference in the amateur game and it must have some influence at EFL level.

Selling Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting Lisbon for £20m. Clever buy by them and a smart move for all concerned. I don't rate Simms so, £8m is way too much imho.

Not saying Simms is worth the reported fee of £8m, but before he was recalled by Everton, he had scored seven goals in just seventeen games for Sunderland, which is impressive. He's only 22 and will get better under the tutelage of Mark Robins at Coventry. Robins and Coventry have clearly demonstrated, in the case of Gyokeres, that they are very adept in developing and improving their forwards. Matt Godden, albeit older, is another forward who has a very impressive goals to games ratio for Coventry too. [Post edited 6 Jul 2023 23:50]
