Early heads up - looks like all trains from Manchester to Newport & back on Saturday have been cancelled due to strikes.

Sam Graham and EEL were incredible in that half. I never thought I’d see the day where Graham is throwing himself at last ditch blocks like that. Was a massive win that is. Well done boys.

O’Donnell and Graham: 1&2 in player of the season so far.

Didn't look like any contact to me.

A bizarre display from the referee where he looked to be under the cosh from the home support in the first half so decided to give them everything in the second half.

Indeed, credit to him for responding. As you say, he’s been poor and I wouldn’t have started him but Bentley is showing he knows what’s needed to get results away from home and obviously believes Ball is vital to that.

Really hope that a way of playing at home can be found where we can back up what we are doing away.

Yep, that's the challenge

The first thing EBJ had to do was make us harder to beat, and one way to do that is by defending from the front. Whether that translates into greater fluidity along the front line at home or not, consistency is required and that includes players knowing each other's game. It was notable how we looked like a team of eleven strangers until recently. Ball is vocal and helps the group band together. It may be starting to have an effect which EBJ would be loathe to disrupt, and if the improvement in morale results in greater confidence, the form of all the players on the pitch will improve

A much needed and very well earned result. That second half and added time seemed longer than an Maths exam! Graham has been picked out by many as a top performer, the turn around since Stockdale sent him to Notts County has been amazing and he seems to get better with every game. It feels like a proper squad now with players finding their best positions and the management team seeing their potential and getting performances out of them. I am sure there are lots of bumps in the road awaiting us but at least there is plenty of spirit to hopefully see us through the Winter and out of the bottom 2.

The annual question... are there two teams worse than us? I am now starting to think there probably are!

I think you’re right.

Crawley look really poor & Harrogate look to be maintaining their decline which started around the turn of the year.

If we can keep picking up points and get into the bottom third by January, shape-shift the squad as much as we can? We could have a moderately successful season.

I think a lot of people are guilty of making their minds up prematurely about some of our players and I certainly include myself in that. Graham is a case in point where faith by a manager pays dividends and frankly, we need more of that in terms of performances and a potential source of revenue. If EBJ adds that to our club, he'll have been a fantastic appointment. I am certainly not hailing him as the next KH, but his obstinacy and refusal to accept mediocre, lack of effort or defeatism is just what we needed after Robbie left the squad with as little belief as we've had as a team for a long, long time. Tonight's 🍺 will taste all the sweeter with 3 points in the bag and back to back away wins.

He's certainly instilled a bit of grit into the team and some fight, for that alone massive credit is due to JB because you genuinely couldn't see where that would possibly come from only a few games ago.
Great work and the team looks to be fighting for each other.

This was Mr Rock: hasn't he heard of nominative determinism?

Edit: In fairness, he didn't give a penalty when their number 9 made a big effort to get one in the first half: https://www.skysports.com/football/newport-county-afc-vs-rochdale/report/468528

Harrogate is an interesting one... their chairman is the manager's dad.

I can't see him sacking the manager anytime soon... imagine the atmosphere at Christmas dinner!

Really? Didn’t know that.

Notice Dooley was an unused sub for Harrogate today, Newby got a run for the last 14 or so. Neither has had a great start with their new clubs to be fair.

we've got to get our home form going if we want a moderately successful season, or even avoid a relegation scrap. It's been a problem for the last few seasons, and 7 of our 8 points this season have come in away games. The next 2 games are at home against Barrow who have dropped off a little, and AFC Wimbledon who are not a good side. Would love 6 points but would take 4 if offered it now.

Grit, the mental toughness to dig in and increased fitness has improved a limited squad from one that was fragile, to one that has belief that together it can give any team in this division a game.
EBJ has got them organised and changed the formation as well as the attitude, All achieved with the addition of just one player to the first team squad. Kudos to the man.
It gives me hope that when should we ever get another forward fit and one of either Nelson or Taylor become available to play we can progress up the league. The key though is doing some midfield business in the transfer window. Clearly the manager has seen enough to know that now is not the right time to give Ethan Brierley more minutes and Malley is not seen as a better option than the current starters. The selection of said midfield target could be key to an enjoyable Dale spring rather than what has been expected so far this season.

Don`t recall seeing a Rochdale team put up such a fantastic defence for such a long time.
The entire defensive line inclluding Diacouraga and White when he came on, were all superb.
It was non-stop pressure in the second half, and they repelled everything thrown at them. What happened to the te.am that couldn`t defend corners ?

My only niggle- Brierley is the future of this team-Hendo is the past. One needs the experience- the other doesn`t.

Special congratulations to those who managed to get through the Newport traffic. I didn`t,and missed the only goal.

Henderson came on for Quigley to provide some much needed experience up top in the closing stages. Not sure I would have taken Quigley off for Brierley with the shape we were playing.

If Quigley hadn’t been on a yellow I’d have taken Rodney off for Hendo personally.

It’s been a long time since we’ve looked so solid defensively. Not just from open play, but from set pieces too. I thought we soaked up a bit too much in the second half but we can’t complain too much coming away with three points.

I thought EEL was immense, he won absolutely everything. I can’t help but think he’s been told to dominate and not worry about what he does with the ball. It’s how it should be for centre half’s at this level, unless their game is a natural ball player. Graham is benefitting from the same mindset, though he suffered from a few worrying mistakes yesterday, but it came alongside some heroic blocks.

Keohane is much stronger defensively when playing on the right, and White came on and made a difference defensively too.

O’Donnell is fast becoming my favourite Dale player. When he signed I thought he was what we needed, just a solid performer week in week out, but he’s made some very important saves and key moments.

Ball was very good first half. He’s come in for some criticism, a fair dose of that from me, but he looks to have knuckled down as have the rest of the squad. He tired again, but still did a job aerially when under the cosh. Kelly did more chasing down than any of our other players combined, which is what we need if he’s not seeing much of the ball. Diagouraga has been a different player since Bentley came in, not sure how or why, maybe he’s not as exposed when others around him are working harder.

I thought Rodney and Odoh were both off their game but still worked hard. I know it should be a pre-requisite for all players but it simply wasn’t early in the season. Quigley is the same, he’s a bit of a clogger but he has a decent goal scoring record and he causes defenders problems. I’d love to see us somehow play Quigley and Rodney together, I think we lose too much of Rodney’s attacking threat when he plays wide. That said, I know it’s making us much more solid as a unit when he plays deeper.

Bentley is doing a very good job so far. We’re not battering teams, granted, but he’s turned a shambles into a well drilled team that are hard to beat. Fingers crossed we see more goals once we’ve settled into a new way of playing, but we’re in a relegation battle and it’s fcuking fantastic to watch us battle!

Been said before that if we see a limited Dale side running through walls and showing for 90+ however many minutes that they care as much as we do then that is pretty much all we can ask for.

The fact that the above combined with Talent (and there is talent in this squad) usually results in points gained and a steady climb up the table.

Big game on Saturday v Barrow... we need to be more up for it than they are and continue the upward curve we seem to be on. Obviously early days but oh my what would we give for a home win on Saturday. Up the Dale Not For Sale. Ever.
