T' T20 & th'Ashes on 10:36 - Dec 20 by D_Alien | Although lacking in variety (not their fault) there's little wrong with our bowlers. Maybe pitch it up a bit more but as you say, they're almost forced into defensive mode by the fragility of our batting Ultimately, the Aussies are just better than us. With covid around, maybe we didn't fancy a Downing St party on return... |

We're like lambs being fed to lyons, totally green, with regular cummins and goings at the wicket Sorry, there's meant to be a serious message in there...

Dont they have they their loved ones with them on tour? There have been plenty of TV clips of them arriving at the resorts they are staying in. If so maybe thats part of the problem….illy would have never put up with that.

Don't follow the off-field shenanigans, but is that right? Presumably that's being paid for by our cricket board? Lots of stuff spouted to the media before the game, but there's no hiding from the reality Time to go back to BoBoland...

Well that clear the air meeting and everybody knowing what they need to do has worked a treat!!! I'm probably with DA in that I wouldn't be bothered if they came home if they go 3-0 down in the current environment. Edit: & they knock off a 3rd of the runs in just over an hour. At least Warner is out but not much of a consolation I am trying tithing if we have won a whole day so far this series even when Malan & Root had a couple of decent partnerships Really really poor [Post edited 26 Dec 2021 8:06]

Latest is that 4 of the wider touring party have tested positive for Covid, including 2 family members. All players cleared, play continues, but will not help an already hammered mental state for the Players.

That’s what happens when you place too much emphasis on white ball cricket & chase the money of T20 & the hundred. The Aussies play a high level of inter state cricket in the Sheffield Shield, out county system dilutes talent & coupled with the downgrading of the county game in favour of shorter formats it’s no wonder we get hammered.

Worth mentioning that the Aussies won the World T20 just a couple of months ago So in addition to getting that right, they're getting the long form very right too. It's simply not a level playing field We can criticise our batting as much as we like, but it'd be like putting Dale into the Championship at the start of next season without any warm-up games Only a radical rethink (omg, not another one?) will change anything

Agreed, however the aussies only have one beer and skittles competition (T20 or similar) which runs alongside the test series from mid december to end of Jan. outside of that ‘window’ the sheffield shield is played. So their test squad do not play in the main part of the Big Bash T20 though they would be available for the play offs/ semi finals once tests finish.

The point of central contracts was to ensure that the players had always the best preparation. If you compare the 2010-11 Ashes tour to this one: 2010-11: Started on 5th November 2010. England played 4 warm-up games (W2 D2) at 3 of the 5 test grounds (4th was Hobart) Drew in Brisbane. First test started on 25th November 2020 Won in Adelaide Lost in Perth Won In Melbourne Won in Sydney 2021-22: Started on 23rd November 2021 England played 2 warmup games against England Lions both in Brisbane Lost in Brisbane Lost in Adelaide Lost in Melbourne The 18 day delay in starting and the lack of preparation against proper teams in Australian conditions IMO is just negligent at the elite level.

The additional factor in 2021-22 was the 2020 T20 world cup - postponed in 2020 and relocated from Australia to India (and then moved to UAE) - so the window for warm up games was less (and what there was, was devoted to intra squad games as you note, which are little more than training sessions). ECB or whatever they are now called had no control over the dates of the T20 world cup. They were set by ICC (= India!). But the ECB still agreed to the revised schedule which was suicidal - bad enough having a rank poor squad but having a squad that is rank poor and unprepared was unforgivable.

T' T20 & th'Ashes on 11:01 - Jan 1 with 1777 views | EllDale | Interesting to note that other countries also seem to struggle at times to convert reaching 25 into a big score of 100 plus. My immediate conclusion, which may be wrong, is that test players now are taking more chances than they used to with a mindset programmed by the urgency to score quickly in white ball cricket. But England’s inability to get past 200 runs regularly is definitely a worry. It doesn’t need every batsman to score heavily in every game, just one or two to post a big score per innings.

36-4 Anybody surprised ?? a spell of more than 70 consecutive dock balls with 3 wickets falling for those zero runs Positive news is that the last 2 days may be rained off so we only have to make sure we don't lose 20 wickets today !!!

Close to our best batting session of the ashes so far ( not much competitio. A bit more of that application and some help from the weather and we could avoid a whitewash. Avoiding the follow on was huge. Don’t think Stokes will make the last test but he’s done his bit in this one.

Went to bed at lunch after another dire collapse not sure where the next run was coming from Woke up to find we'd been scoring at 4.5 an over since then! A glimmer of light on a cold winter's day, great from Bairstow, Stokes & Wood. Usual shite from the rest

Are dock balls those the batsmen leave?

Suspect an autocorrect - either spell check or voice translation of dot ball ...... unless there were nettles in the outfield? Or I've been whooshed?
