Do this a lot. In my experience, it all depends which airport you fly into. Best experience (assuming take off / landing on time) = Minneapolis (small airport, nice people) - under an hour; worst experience Houston (seriously evil security people) - over 3 1/2 hours. Obviously if you're late starting for whatever reason you're then royally fkd with a connecting flight; it's true as stated above if it's a through ticket they have a duty to sort it out but you've still got all the hassle. I can concur. houston an awful experience and made Mimia feel a breeze. I even dropped their tourism department an email saying it was an awful 3-hour experience and they will never have people travelling to their city from overseas unless they had to. they were totally disinterested |  | | |

It’s weird because I’ve flown to Houston a number of times over the past few years and only once had a problem, which was prior to the ESTA waiver machines being installed there. I was there 3 weeks ago and strolled through immigration in a few minutes. Waited half an hour for my luggage though! |  | | |

Avoid JFK, Newark and Chicago O'Hare, especially Chicago. Boston was quick, RDU is always quiet and there are direct flights from Heathrow, Cincinatti is a fast moving one and KCI Kansas is usually quick transition with direct flights from LHR too. Washington Dulles is another good destination for a transfer flight. [Post edited 3 May 2019 8:44]

Unless i'm somehow mistaken, you don't need to go through immigration or mess with any bags if you don't wish. You won't be entering the country if you remain airside. Assuming you booked with one airline/partners.
There'll be a separate connecting flight desk you might need to speak with, should be quick and easy. [Post edited 3 May 2019 13:34]

This is connecting flights from international to domestic. I.e London to Atlanta to Houston. In the US you have to go through immigration before getting on any domestic flight. | | | |

If you have time, pick up some food at the stopover airport, in case they don't feed you on the internal flight. We flew London to Seattle via Philly - they fed us on the Atlantic crossing, but there was nothing on the internal flight second leg. All the locals seemed to have bought sandwiches or pizzas in the airport, but nobody told us. Very hungry, and it was a six hour flight. |  | | |
