Windsor Davies RIP 18:57 - Jan 19 with 4971 viewsArthurDaley

There is probably a lot on here who don't remember the golden days of comedy on the BBC. From the 70s was, It Aint Half Hot Mum was always a must watch show .
Sadly one of the leading characters RSM Williams ( Windsor Davies 88 ) has passed away.
He even had a hit record with Rochdale's own Don Estelle.
Thanks for the laughs Windsor RIP.

A large VAT Dave

Of course this starred Don Estelle, who lived and died in Rochdale.

I think Don Estelle had the Red Lion in the Square off Market St. in Whitworth, how long for,I don`t know, but he spent the last few years of his life in Christchurch,New Zealand. He went back to Rochdale in poor health intending to return to NZ,but died waiting for a liver transplant in 2003 aged 70.

In the spring of 1974 i got a job as a student, delivering leaflets for a few weeks for a bit of extra cash (beer money)

Don Estelle was a struggling jobbing actor at the time, and he was the organiser of the leaflet "gang", dropping us at various locations. We'd sit in his car for lunch, a pleasant chap but you could tell he wanted to be elsewhere

A few months later, It Ain't Half Hot Mum hit the screens

I remember the tv series very well.

On the clip shown on bbc news, when Windsor was doing his magnificently shouty RSM, Don could be seen to his side chuckling along with the studio audience.

The interplay between RSM & his mimicking of La di da Gunner Graham used to crack me up every time. Superb

Yes, I'm pretty sure he lived in one of the seven sisters later in life.
It ain't half hot mum was one of those old type, low budget comedies, but it did make me chuckle.
RIP Windsor Davies.

The thing that surprised me the most about It Ain't Half Mum was the fact the Indian bearer Ranji Ram was played by the white actor Michael Bates

Don Estelle's autobiography is one of Danny Baker's favourites because it is an absolute car-crash of a memoir. Not read it myself but apparently it's a poorly edited mishmash of career disappointments, disapproval of modern life and unending praise for Rochdale Town Hall (which he could presumably see from the flats).

Didn't Don Estelle flat share with Bill Oddie on Falinge where they co-wrote Trainspotting?

Michael Bates was brilliant, even when he was suffering from cancer, professional right to the end. As diver has just said,Auntie BBC won`t show repeats any more, too scared of upsetting the wowsers, which is a pity. Still, can always watch it on Youtube.

No, it was Lisa Stansfield and Jeff Moore, with script editing by Colin Baker, Anna Friel and that Sinead off Corrie.

Maybe.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

tbh i've always thought Whispering Grass to be a coded message about R Gracie, basically telling her to pipe down a bit

Leave him alone the guy obviously needs an intervention. And before I got my apprenticeship that’s what I did in the summer of 2006 as a 16 year old school leaver. I can assure you many a bag of leaflet was thrown down a drain or put in a post box while I hid in various mates flats and houses on the estates of Rochdale.

I did the delivery stuff as well. Leaflets and free samples of things like Twiglets. Remember them?
We had boxes of the stuff in our garage.
