The world is a crap place 15:50 - Nov 20 with 6247 views | Catullus | I heard on the radio today that the MacMillan cancer charity has had an increase in requests for help from cancer patients who are coming under pressure for taking time off work, seriously, wtf? Then later I found out that my nieghbours son had lost his job after taking time off to go to hospital to see his mother. She was just about to have life saving heart surgery, she was in an induced coma for a week. He worked for an agency, it was only a temp job until Christmas anyway but still, where is the compassion? What kind of heatless b'stards can treat people like this?

Who changed the rules? Occupational health should be on the side of the sick person, not the manager. I suppose I was lucky that my Occy health doctor (when I was recommended for retirement) was a decent person. She admitted to me that my senior manager had been putting pressure on her for an answer, hoping to get me made medically redundant but that she didn't think it was fair to make any call until the medical evidence gave a definite answer about my condition and prognosis. Hungarian lady she was, I'd send her a Christmas card if I could, if she'd bowed to the pressure and it had been redundancy I wuld have lost the house!!

The world is a crap place on 19:02 - Nov 20 with 3130 views | icecoldjack | The world is a crap place, the utter despair of many working people in South Wales who've had to eat crap from agencies/parasites on a daily basis is in the many thousands, and I've no doubt that half the reason we got brexit was because people could see nothing changing for their kids, no matter the EU no matter which government is in charge, things got so bad half the population decided to say fook it lets throw the cards in the air and see where they fall, the people with safe jobs just want to maintain the status quo and keep their head in the sand until a safe retirement, those not so lucky very often have to live from pay check to pay check irrelevant of being sick or having a loved one being sick. Getting treated like dirt will however, strengthen the resolve of people to start getting organised in unions once again, with proper jobs will grow proper protection, at least that's the only hope I see, somebody who is smart enough will realise if you give something good to an employee and treat them well they will give you back more than enough productivity and take ownership of their tasks. Once that penny drops, then we can hopefully start to see the end of parasite agencies who fook over their workers every day. They need to be the exception not the rule . It's a romantic notion I know but I live in hope always.

It's not just about voting Tory, it's about accepting crap politicians whichever party you vote in. Until we change that, until we force our politicians to be better, to do better nothing will change. I keep having to repeat myself on this but Labour have been as sh/t as anyone else. Are people bilnd or stupid, or both? Our two party system is knackered, past it's sell by date. Don't just vote Labour expecting they'll make it better. Show them both we've had enough and choose an independent candidate. PS, Thanks Flashberry but in 7 years no, sadly my health hasn't improved. Every time they fix something, another thing goes wrong, I guess you can have too much fun because my body is paying the price for cheques I'd written 30 years ago What worries me is, where is the job security and job protection that I'd enjoyed? What does the future hold for my son? I didn't want this to be about brexit but, if the EU is so good why aren't they putting protections in so people aren't suffering even more than needs be when they are ill? The comment about agencies is spot on, agencies are milking workers, charging companies for a worker then paying the worker less than the agency claims. It costs the NHS billions for agency staff who then don't have to do certain jobs leaving the full time staff to pick up the slack. I think throwing the cards up in the air is exactly what many people didand yes, out of desperation.

people also have to work all hours just to pay the bills too. Often both parents at full time jobs sacrificing family time just to pay the mortgage and food bills. It is not getting better with the divide between rich and not rich getting bigger. Also, with manager's (failed bullies at school) doing their best to prove that their income is worth it by getting blood out of a stone for the wealthy, things won't improve.

This is true, the place where I work the OHU Doctor who is extremely highly qualified and probably better qualified than a GP can overturn a GP, but I don’t think they can/would override a consultant. That said, I am aware not aware of any cases where that the OHU Doctor has overridden a GP’s sick note, but they have asked some searching questions. Edit typo predictive text! They didn’t need to, didn’t have to, weren’t obliged to legally. They just did. Whatever may happen in the future, we’ll always be grateful for that kind of support. It makes a hell of a difference.

It changed in 2013 ... "The government guidance of March 2013 states that the ‘Fit Note’ is classed as an advice note, and it is for employers/HR to determine whether or not to accept it" But ... "The employee should be personally examined by the occupational health doctor or specialist nurse and the decision should not have been made merely on a report or on the basis of a review of the medical notes."

I am glad to hear that. My company pay ten days sick pay (maximum) a year. One of my colleagues had a heart attack and is on statutory sick pay. I am glad that there are private companies that look after the people that make them money.

Ssshhhhuuuusssshh you are not allowed to say how Labour virtually bankrupted the country with Liam Byrne their Treasury secetary walking out of office laughing and saying " good luck there is no money left"". Fecking shameful. Poverty for everyone not just the few is Labours goal just because their jealousy and lack of work ethic overrides their ambition . 3 million jobs created by the Tories but hey that does not bother the lefties since most scrounge off the benefit system.Sad but true. Have a good day guys.
