RIP Nigel Parker 11:39 - Nov 11 with 9917 viewssnuffler

I found out this morning that lifelong Dale supporter Nigel passed away yesterday afternoon. He will be sadly missed by many supporters. He had not been well for some time now,but it was a complete shock. I am sure many of you will have fond and amusing memories of Nigel.

I haven't seen him at a game for years. He was always someone you saw up and down the country in the 1990s and although a very quirky character, his support and love for the team was never in doubt. He was nicknamed 'Kodak', if I remember correctly. Sad news.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

He spent a long time in hospital quite recently and was very limited with his mobility afterwards. I last saw him in Tesco cafe earlier this year, chirpy as usual and still talking about Dale. Sad to hear he has passed but he will be easily remembered by those who came across him.

At least he went out on a day when Dale bagged a victory.

I went to Primary school and then on to Grammar school with him. He took a tremendous amount of stick at Grammar school for his size and lack of worldliness probably the result of being the son of older and perhaps over-protective parents. I dont think he ever left home and as far as I know continued to live in his parents house after their demise.
It wasn't easy to be a friend to Nigel and I sometimes wish I had made more effort but as our lives moved in different directions we rarely saw each other except to say "hi" if our paths crossed outside Spotland occasionally. I think of him every time I drive past St Martins in Castleton. I dont think he ever harmed anything or anyone, not many of us can say that.

What was the story behind the Kodak nickname? I’d only ever known him as Big Nigel.

Had been struggling with his mobility a few years. Sorry to hear of his passing.

A very sad loss, Nigel was a real Dale fan. Im sure those of us over a certain age can recall tales involving him.

Very sad. He often turned up with his Saturday Daily Telegraph crossword and we would 'discuss' the possible answers. If anybody has the details of his funeral please could you post them on Here. He deserves our support.

Wasn't it because he was usually seen with a camera?

I remember him as the walking train timetable. Dale through and through. Condolences to his family and friends.

Hope somebody can post details of arrangements. Would be much appreciated

In the days before mobile phones and the internet I remember Nigel walking round the Sandy with a transistor radio at his ear giving out latest scores to anyone who listen.

Spot on.

He could quote every train time for every possible route to a Dale game. I sat next to him on the coach to the Watford cup game years ago, (when Peter Conning scored in less than a minute). He gave me complete chapter and verse on the railway system and his experiences as a Dale fan travelling to games up and down the country. He was clearly an intelligent man, but was a figure of fun to some because of his eccentricity. There was far more to him than his Billy Bunter appearance and 'plummy' accent. (See earlier post from 49th season).

I last saw him at a Dale game early last season. He had two sticks and was really struggling. He had also piled on more weight which only exacerbated his condition. He still had time to chat, though he was clearly unwell. It's a sad loss for sure.

Nigel's funeral will be on Tuesday 27th November at St Martin's Church Castleton at 11 am and then the Crematorium at 11:40. I know he would have been chuffed to see as many fellow Dale fans there as can possibly make it.

Yep, sad news. First came across him on the 400 bus when I was working in Ashton in the late eighties and he recognized me from Dale. He had some fixations, still going on about Hilditch being better than Wellings long after both had left the club.
I seem to recall someone telling me that he had a brother who was one of United's hardcore hooligan element which seemed a bit unlikely.

He definately had a brother. I remember in the mid 70s Nigel and him went to a game at Scunthorpe where he was arrested for allegedly robbing a programme seller, which outraged Nigel when he was told of the offence.

I know the trust have a lot of unpaid things to do but is it out of the question for someone from the trust or otherwise to represent his fellow fans.

This is not the time for bickering.

I think the club ought to be sending someone as well. I know he was a season ticket holder for many years and may still have been one. He also travelled the length and breadth of the country for ages until his heath issues kicked in.

I love characters from the past like Nigel, they always make me smile and all clubs have a few but they are becoming less obvious as time goes on

Does Nigel appear on the front cover of Life Sentence by Mark Hodkinson ,have a look I am sure that he is to the left of the bloke with the white hat upper centre left. I know he was on the coach as I skived off school for the replay at Norwich and the Observer photographed us outside the town hall in the morning
