Given that crossrail is almost complete and the government has already committed to Crossrail 2 running south to north I cannot understand why this would not go as far south as Gatwick especially given that Crossrail itself will go as far west as Reading. And why they are using their tunnelling machines why not build a direct underground high speed rail link between Gatwick and Heathrow. Will keep disruption to a minimum especially compared to the plans for the M25 during the building of the third runway at Heathrow
In terms of extra flights to and from the UK, Heathrow is the worst option. The aim is to not get left behind by the other hubs.
A magnificent football club, the love of our lives, finding a way to finally have its day in the sun.

Airports are built where there are available green field sites.
As a regular flyer you will be aware that most passengers heading to London want to land at Heathrow.
Logan, here in Boston, is supposed to have the most passenger traffic per sq ft in the western world. It’s uncomfortable at times but it’s where travellers want to be, virtually downtown.
I live in Milton, directly south of and abutting Boston, we get a lot of flights passing overhead rarely bothers me.

I couldn’t disagree with you more!
You are placing the preferences of people who may only use an airport once in their lifetime, over the many thousands and maybe millions whose lives are polluted by noise and emissions. Factors which will rise considerably with a third runway in an already congested area, for which the government’s response is that C02 pollution will decrease with improvements to engines.
That’s just from above, increased traffic on the ground will be an added factor as well.
Comparing Logan with LHR is like QPR with Man. City. And correct me if I’m wrong but I seem to recall my flights coming in/going out over the Atlantic. Which is a big difference compared to starting your descent from out past Canary Wharf and flying in along the Thames.

Mark my words: the rich will be safely directed through Hayes while the rest of us will be snagged on the M4!
Can I ask a question about RAF Northolt - which has also seen increased traffic since the Luftwaffe were routed. On my last trip back, I heard there are plans for it and I can’t recall if they’re looking to increase air traffic or, turn it into houses?

Yes, I recognise there are state owned airports, but you specifically mentioned Arab investment (a symptom of the free market) hence my comment.
No idea why you've brought the SNP or Unite up to be honest. I am also in favour of expansion even though I'm a commie aspiration strangler.

That's crazy though Baz. I know the default union position is that more jobs is good for workers (despite the correct position being to demand full unemployment for all, not just the rich), but so is breathable air and a habitable climate for our kids

Flying is still cleaner than driving.
Also, the volume of flights isn't going to go down if we don't build the third runway, it will just be elsewhere.
Ultimately rail is the solution but if the 3rd runaway takes a lot of freight off the road then go for it.
A lot of conditions for my support for third runaway, including a reduction in road transport.

Do you live anywhere near Heathrow airport mate?? No third runway!
I can see you are on the fence Connell!
If residents don't want it then that's the bottom line and it shouldn't happen.
However as usual, trying to get a honest and frank debate it is impossible in this country. A bit like BREXIT (sorry Clive).
I went to the Labour London conference a couple of years ago where this was debated, and both sides shouted each other down throughout. It was embarrassing.

Why don´t they just build another runway at Gatwick, for me it´s a non brainer.
Gatwick Express to Victoria, 30 minutes.
Heathrow Express to Paddington, 15 minutes.
Whats 15 minutes between friends
Living in Acton I don't support a 3rd runway at LHR for reasons already discussed but at 20mins door-to-door I can't deny it's convenient for travel personally.
The problem with getting to Gatwick by rail is the Brighton main line is already over capacity. 104% volume to seat (127% East Croydon to Vic). A 2rd runway there would probably be a pìss in the ocean but it's already overflowing.

So you dont live near Heathrow then!
AND WHEN I DREAM , I DREAM ABOUT YOU AND WHEN I SCREAM I SCREAM ABOUT YOU!!!!!
For some reason, when i typed my original post here , due to the name of the airport the site blocked me posting it, so i'll be a bit canny here with this one....
i suggest.......woodbridge in Suffolk.
Its anout an hour at present out of london, planes can come in over the sea, and it has a neighbor airfield within throwing distance. Both have long runways which will need upgrading, plus theres plenty of room between them for terminals and 3rd and 4th runways to be built with ease, plus room for expansion.
then remove heathrow from the map, and turn it into a lovely green space. as far as i can see, the issue isnt about the need for a 3rd runway, but the need for the money men to make yet more money.
take a look on google earth. its a pretty perfect solution.

Mate sensible solutions dont come into this. BBA are a bunch of crooks who have lied, bunged and lied again to get this daft idea to where it is today! Its a f ucking disgrace that so many peoples lives are gonna be blighted by this. I for one will lose my job as my place of work in longford will become a car park if this thing goes through! Everyday the air pollution standards are being broken thats even without a bloody third runway! The only people who are gonna gain out of this are BAA and their government stooges. SO NO THIRD RUNWAY!

What makes me laugh is that serially lying f*ckwit Boris 'Backstabber' Johnson saying he'd 'lie down in front of the bulldozers' before allowing it to happen - and then arranging to be out of the country for the vote in Parliament...
What an utter knut.

In April 2013 the Ministry of Defence announced a proposal to increase the number of private flights from 7,000 to 12,000 per year as part of plans to increase the income generated by the airfield. The number of flights would be limited to 40 per day, and the increase would be phased in over three years to 2016.[67] The airfield was mostly used for VIP jets, with about 3,800 military flights a year.
I live in Hillingdon John, and there is absolutely no doubt that as far as our back garden goes, Northolt is the noisier airport of the two - but that is our good fortune. Getting busier and busier all the time - the monster that took off last week dwarfed a 747.

That is a significant number of flights and makes it a busy airport.
Coming from Geenford as I do, it's been noticeable how much the NHT air traffic has increased and, at a time when it is not uncommon to see a lot of A380s etc. aimlessly circling the parish as well.
All told, that's a lot of emissions and noise to contend with.

That sounds similar to Manston in Kent, which could've been made easily accessible by extending HS1 out there. I'm not sure what's happening with Manston now, I think they were planning to turn it into something like an industrial estate/housing or maybe both.

Sorry but flying isn't cleaner. One of the reasons is that there is a multiplier factor for emissions from flights due to the altitude at which the emissions occur. They affect the climate more than emissions at lower altitudes, e.g. on roads or rails. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has estimated that aviation's total climate impact is some 2—4 times that of its direct CO2 emissions alone (excluding the potential impact of cirrus cloud enhancement). This is known as radiative forcing.
Researchers at the University of Oslo’s International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis found that per passenger-hour traveled, aviation’s climate impact is a factor of 6 to 47 higher than the impact from car travel.
