Mr Sheen — I think we have 1 more year of Parachute payments — from memory, about £10m. When people talk about promotion to the Premier League, almost without exception it’s in relation to the TV money. There is never the mention of testing yourself against the best, aiming for European qualification or watching the best players in the country; it’s always about the TV money. Well, personally, I can’t get too excited about the prospect of a wealthy owner either pocketing a load of money for themselves (Man Utd) or spu nking insane amounts of money on players, agents and club executives before my club somehow finds itself skint again in no time at all. That does absolutely fu ck all for me.

Spot on I remember when Rangers and Watford went up to the 1st division in the eighties and actually were in it to try and win it , same as Balckburn under dagleish, Fulham under tigana , Newcastle under Keegan , Villa under taylor , they all came up to test themselves and to be better , not this windfall bollox and try and grab 16th, people were saying the other day that Dyche should be manager of the year, the geezer hasn't won an away game all year FFS
| And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

That was until they beat Palace the other day. But I agree with your sentiment. It is such a shame and you do wonder if it is worth hankering after achieving Premier league 'status' sometimes.

PLay Offs then on 11:11 - May 17 by Konk | I wouldn’t want to watch Reading every week for all sorts of reasons, but I can’t really blame them for playing the way they did against us. We smashed them 5-0 at our place earlier in the season and in the 3 ½ times we’ve played them since, they’ve set-up the same way and we’ve only scored once. I think it’s self-evident that Stam has recognised we’re a much better footballing side and that we can murder teams if we’re given time and space, so they’ve restricted both and looked to capitalise on any chances they get. We’re a pretty small side that can be outmuscled against more physical teams, and with no height or aerial presence in the side, we can really only play one way, which as we showed against Reading, isn’t always enough against a well-organised, physically stronger and bigger team. We were unfortunate that Atwell was sh it and didn’t spot the handball in the build up to their goal on Saturday, but although we were also unlucky that the officials didn’t spot Kermogant punching the ball a split second before Kalas’s handball, they equally should have scored a sitter when Swift had an open goal. I can’t say I wish Reading good luck in the final, but I also can’t be (too!) bitter about the way they approached both games. I’m pretty sure I’ve been relaxed about us time-wasting at times in the past, and in both games against Shaktar Donetsk, we were almost comically out-footballed, but came away with a win and a draw after superbly disciplined performances and a huge collective effort. And I can’t remember being too apologetic about it. It happens. We’ve rightly had a lot of plaudits for some of the football we’ve played this season, but if one game summed up our season it was Brighton at home: dominated for an hour, missed a penalty at 0-0, went 1-0 up and then watched a wilier, stronger, well-organised Albion side run out 2-1 winners. The difference between the 2 sides was Dunk and Murray. It’s been obvious all year that we’ve lacked a physically imposing Centre back and a bit of class/mobility up front, and when we failed to address either issue in January, we seriously damaged our prospects of promotion. And that’s exactly what we missed last night. Aluko, Ayite and Kebano all have plenty of pace and trickery, but none of them is the most composed of footballers when it comes to finishing or the final ball. I’m personally not that fussed about the Premier League: we have 5,000 day trippers or away fans dotted around the ground, tickets are more expensive, I have to talk about football to the Fantasy League Liverpool/Man Utd/Arsenal/Chelsea fans at work, Man Utd acquaintances who’ve never been to Manchester gloating because they’ve turned over the mighty FFC, mere survival is success. I can’t get excited about games against the wealthiest clubs, and Stoke, WBA, Burnley, Bournemouth, Swansea and Watford are no more exciting a prospect for me than Villa, Sheff Utd, Leeds or PNE. I have also barely thought about Chelsea since our relegation — I’m a happier, less bitter person without two games a season against that lot. The games against Rangers and Brentford are better days out than our games against Chelsea — which must surely be amongst the most one sided local rivalries in World football in terms of results and therefore one side barely giving a fu ck about the other. For me, the best thing about promotion would have been the increased prospects of keeping hold of Jokanovic (vital), Cairney (highly desirable) and seeing a bit more of Sessegnon before he inevitably moves on. If we have to raise funds to get 2 decent Centre forwards and a stronger Centre back, then I’d sell Sessegnon with a decent sell-on clause — not even a regular starter, he’d be far less of a loss in the short term than Cairney and would probably go for similar money. We have one of the smallest squads in the division and only good fortune with injuries stopped us having to scratch around to fill gaps. Even though we ultimately came up short, this has been a really enjoyable season; we’ve played some great football, scored loads of goals, the manager and players have developed a strong bond with the support, and we’ve turned a corner. Last season we finished 20th on 51 points with a goal difference of -13, scoring 66 goals; 36 of which came from Dembele and McCormack. We lost both in the summer, but we’ve come back with 9 players scoring 5 goals or more and I love seeing goals spread throughout the side. This year we’re joint top goal scorers with Newcastle and Norwich on 85 and a goal difference of +28; when you consider we've also missed 9 penalties, that's pretty remarkable. That’s great progress and at times we’ve been brilliant to watch. If we can keep hold of Jokanovic, our better players and recruit 3-4 quality players in the summer then I think we’ll have another good year. Oh, and I think Reading are massively trolling you lot with those URRRRRRRRRRRRRZ! Advertising boards. It’s the Z that does it. Kwazy. [Post edited 17 May 2017 12:29]

Great post Konk. I am really glad you post on here mate. Last night I was surprised to find both my 17 year old son and I were hoping you would equalise in the end. I really cannot stand Reading and cannot believe they even made the playoffs let alone are now in the final. Blimey, we even outplayed them at their place!

Thanks mate - Reading look an extremely limited side to me, in which case Stam probably deserves a lot of credit for getting them the success they've had. I wouldn't want to watch it every week, but I guess it depends how much importance you place on watching something other than an organised bunch of physically fit athletes blocking and screening with the odd quick foray up field. I really hope Huddersfield go up, but I couldn't see them getting past Reading, in which case it's Wednesday for me: probably my favourite ground other than the Cottage, excellent away support and it's mad they've been away from the top division for 17 years.

As said, all people talk about is the money which 99% is hoovered up by players, agents, execs etc. Fans have to pay more for tickets, merchandise, catering etc.... why not less? Unless something changes we'll just get tonked week in, week out. Fatigue sets in, we hope for 17th and if we dont go down its higher prices the following season for more of the same. Does seem weird doesn't it but then I've just had a quick look on t'internet and it does seem plausible although still not sure why, for example, Huddersfield would agree to it when they could have taken many more than 2,000 to Hillsborough which holds nearly 40,000 yet "only" had just over 32,000 tonight. http://www.efl.com/global/section5.aspx 34.2 Facilities for visiting supporters 34.2.1 Each Club must make provision for at least 2,000 visiting supporters at every home match or such number as represents 10% of the Club’s certified capacity, if less than 2,000. The League may, on the prior written application of a Club, suspend this Regulation or reduce the figure either for a particular League Match or for a period of time. Each Club shall, subject to any dispensations granted by the Board, make provision for at least 200 of the visiting supporters to be accommodated under cover. Any Club which fails to meet the requirement of 200 visiting supporters being accommodated under cover and which does not have a dispensation granted by the Board shall have such amounts as the Board shall determine (in its absolute discretion) withheld from that Club’s central distributions from the Pool Account until such time as the Club can meet the requirement. The following also cmae up on a search confirming that last year Boro would have had a maximum of 2,000 tickets. http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/championship-play-offs Boro will have a maximum allocation of 2,000 tickets for the game. It could be even less if 2,000 is more than 10% of the stadium's attendance, which would mean Boro would likely be allocated around 1,250 tickets if they play Brentford. Regardless of who Boro play, with a maximum of 2,000 tickets being made available, we can expect queues similar to those outside the ticket office ahead of the Man City and Arsenal cup games. Not sure of the history, but I know Wednesday only gave Albion 2,000 tickets last season. Our allocation at Huddersfield was 2,000, so perhaps it was based upon given equal allocations determined by the smallest away section? It was agreed once the 4 sides were confirmed, but before the final round of fixtures. So, we had 3,500+ for the fogged-off game at Reading, 2,800 or something for the replayed match, but only 2,000 for the play-off. Huddersfield away £20 - Wednesday away £39: I know which owners I'd sooner see rewarded with promotion.

Some very good posts as usual Konk , I was also hoping Fulham would make the final they have played some of the best football in the division this season and are far better to watch than Reading but then that's all pretty obvious I guess. I thought Wednesday would finally get their act together but as somebody else has commented I think Wagner got it spot on in resting and preparing his team, the bloke does appear a very shrewd coach. Wonder what Wednesday's approach will be for next season, maybe another £10 million on a striker, how many more do they need. Just read that Rhodes didn't take a penalty when he presumably finished the game, guess he wasn't on the list of penalty takers but the question is why or did he bottle it.......

Bottle job. Any striker should be in the list of first five penalty takers. Hope Hudds win the final, but you can see Reading boring their way to victory with a 1-0 or win on pens.
