Yet another Terrorist atrocity 13:12 - Jun 12 with 19319 viewssnork44

A gunman has opened fire in a gay nightclub in Orlando in Florida and killed 20 people and 45 have been taken to hospital, which means the death toll may increase. The FBI has already stated it is the work of an Islamic terrorist.

So many obvious, logical arguments for gun control, and America gives you opportunities to discuss it all the time.

But then someone feels the need to bring it up after something like this, shooting their own credibility in the foot, ironically. Bad timing.

Sorry Tummer - it's not clear whether you mean it's in bad taste or because you mean that if there were more guns then the gunman could have been stopped?

The US has waaaaaaaaay more gun-related deaths than France (and probably the whole of Europe put togethet).

Easy access certainly doesn't help, whatever the reasons behind the deaths.

Yup.

Tighter gun control seems to have no effect on Islamic Terrorism.

Something else obviously needed.

In fact, here's a perfect excuse to talk about it, just as timely and even from THE SAME CITY FMFS.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/11/entertainment/orlando-christina-grimmie-shot/

Unfortunately America in particular has a history of losers wanting their 15 minutes of fame from John Hinkley ,Mark Chapman to the Skull Faced loser at Sandy Hook and last night the guy that killed the singer in Orlando. The killer that committed the atrocity at the gay club had practiced intensively with an assault rifle bought legally here. Wayne and his cronies in the NRA will fight tooth and nail to fight any sensible gun laws and will argue that more guns not less will make America safer. That is what people are fighting against here, it is a fight that will never be won when you have one party being backed by the gun lobby and the weapons manufactures.

It means this has absolutely nothing to do with gun control, for or against.

Being overly opportunistic and in bad taste is almost secondary.

And it's equally as ridiculous and embarrassing to try to claim this tragedy proves that We The People need to arm themselves, cuz ya know, terrorists.

There should be a comprehensive background check to own a weapon I.e someone being mentally able to own a gun, a limit on magazine size also assault weapons should be made more difficult to buy. An AR-15 or an AK-47 even though are illegal to be sold to shoot as a fully automatic weapon, they still spew out bullets at a terrific rate.

One unsettling thing about this is that Mateen had apparently received weapons training in connection with his job as a security guard, which would probably also have helped him pass any screening checks when he purchased the guns. What one might have hoped would have blocked him from buying weapons was his three interviews with the FBI, who ultimately decided he was not a threat. One senses that they have a problem of overload - just as our own security services probably do - many they could watch but limited resources.

Incidentally it is true that a semi-automatic AR-15 can fire as fast as a shooter can execute successive trigger pulls, but the same is true of almost any semi-automatic sporting rifle. Laws limiting magazine size may be an issue.

SJWs will always try and find another reason apart from Islam. Always trying to rationalise or mitigate any atrocity done by Muslims be it mass murder or mass child rape.

The love-in between lefties, "liberals", and feminists with Islam is weird.

You'd think they'd hate such a repressive, misogynistic, homophobic ideology.

It's the perfect time to discuss gun control. The immediate aftermath of a tragedy is the only time the average American even seems to question it. Give it a few weeks and this will be largely forgotten and the benefits of gun control won't seem so apparent.

That's no disrespect to anyone who lost their life or their families. It's about preventing the next one.

Should have added that the same posters who try to mitigate or explain away anything done by a Muslim are usually all over threads about non-Muslim crimes (eg Ched Evans or Adam Johnson) doing exactly the opposite.

Given that I am almost certainly one of the posters you refer to Dailew, please show me where I have in any way glossed over or mitigated or explained away this attack or indeed any others.

If it is not clear to you - I think the man who did this is an absolute monster. An evil, disgusting monster and I hope he rots in his version of hell and for that matter I hope his disgusting piece of crap of a father does as well.

I also think that the Texan politician who tweeted verses from the Bible yesterday saying the gays had it coming (words to that effect) is a disgusting monster. I also believe that the white Right Wing zealot with a car full of semi automatic assault weapons and a pipe bomb who was thankfully stopped before he was able to do the same thing at LA Pride yesterday is a monster.

The only difference between us is that I see no more reason of tarring all Moslems with the same brush for the acts of the Moslem monster than I do with tarring all White Christian people with the acts of the white Christian monster.

All religion is full of language that encourages this sort of hatred. It is not confined to one of them. All of it is disgusting, medieval nonsense written by men that didn't know better. All religion still promotes this sort of thing. All of it. But I don't expect the average Moslem to apologise for it or to be linked to it anymore than I would have expected my chapel going grandmother to apologise for the white nutter if she was still alive.

If you can't see the hypocrisy in the papers reporting a Moslem nutter as an 'Islamic terrorist' while reporting the White bloke as a 'mentally ill loner' then so be it.

Let's just carry on hating. They can hate us, so we can hate them right back. Then they can hate us a bit more and so it continues. It's working so well isn't it.

I agree with you. I am so thankful we don't have widespread possession of guns here. Fine if someone has a rifle if needed for sport, or farmers or people that manage land or whatever, but why anyone on earth needs to own an assault weapon or even a handgun is just utterly beyond me.

Dont know how on earth you could possibly get them back now though.

Perchie, I agree with you ! But gun culture is so ingrained over here you will never get any meaningful and sensible gun control. Obama wanted to ban people on the no fly list from having a gun. But guess who blocked that the NRA and the Republican Senators who said that was against these peoples second amendment rights! But there is some need for guns, I live in a rural area and guns are a way of life in my locality either rifles for hunting deer or birds or handguns for self protection for lonely people or for isolated homesteads as the local police or Sherriff's deputies as miles away. But love of assault weapons is warped and dangerous.

Sandy Hook was the perfect time, but to Wayne and his buddies the answer was to arm the teachers ! The simplistic answer by the NRA is to have more guns not less. As I have said before Wayne La Pierre and NRA celebrate massacres not lament them as it means more paranoid people buying guns and joining their evil organization. As long as you have a powerful gun lobby you will always have massacres.

And at the same time take a guess about the religious persuasion of the Texan politician who tweeted a picture with a quote from the Bible saying you reap what you sow a few hours after over 50 American people were murdered.

It's all sickening. All of it. As are comments from people on here that think it's Ok to post 'funny' comments about people's sexuality because the people attacked were gay. It's all the same thing just to different degrees.

As long as certain sections of society believe that they are better than others because of their race, or religion, or sexuality or colour this sort of thing will happen. Because it means that they look at others as 'less' than them. So they don't empathise, so people become expendable.

They are monsters.

Nah. We had a reformation or something. Kerouac told me. It means all the horrible things in the Christian bible have somehow been magically absolved. I can't work out quite how it works myself but I'll leave it to experts like Kerouac to explain it to me.

Meanwhile, the Lieutenant Governor of Texas has tweeted this.

"Do not be deceived. God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows."

Justifying the murder of gay people because they were gay people. By an elected US official who happens to be Christian. Perhaps Kerouac could explain this aberation to me.

I was being entirely serious about internment, Hump. I'd have those on the watch lists hauled in and have them thoroughly investigated, then either released or formally charged. There may be a few on these lists that shouldn't ought to be while others shouldn't be in circulation?

The Woolwich murderers were supposedly being watched, weren't they? Half measures don't work.

So the killer had been a regular at the nightclub and used gay dating apps; his ex claiming he was gay.

So it's not really homophobic terrorism or Islamic terrorism but somebody utterly in denial about their sexuality almost certainly conflicted due to religion and snapping. Owen Jones will be upset...
