Improving the atmosphere at Spotland 17:58 - Mar 10 with 23450 viewsRAFC1907

As Hilly says its something that needs to happen, the amount of times at home games when its 0-0 or even when we go 1-0 up our players must be thinking we have the worst support ever.

Away following nobody can complain, great support in numbers and very vocal.

The football club is the only thing in this town that gives Rochdale any positive headlines, so surely we must do all we can to ensure the good times around Spotland remain, its as though its 1995 and were sitting 5th from bottom.

With the results the management and players deliver our support should be constantly heard over the course of 90+ minutes.

Are we still the only club in the football pyramid to stop fans bringing in flags/large banners etc? Creating a positive atmosphere around the place can only be beneficial to everyone who enters the ground on a Saturday and a much more enjoyable experience.

I have mates who would rather watch the likes of City/United on TV as they reckon the atmosphere sounds better than being at a live game at Rochdale.

Bastien Hery hit the nail on the head also.

I always defend Dave, he plays my kind of music and I think he's different to what you get at most grounds. I'd rather have him with his Manc accent than some absolute balloon head going round the pitch with a microphone trying to gee the crowd up into a frenzy. I've seen that at far too many away grounds. What we have is unique from what I've seen, and it's only the Dale fans that whinge because away fans seems to love it.

That being said, I do fully understand that people get annoyed because there's a lack of variety. I'm not blinkered to the point I can't see that many people's match day experience would be better if there was more variety. All I can suggest to him is that he plays stuff from different decades rather than have New Order following the Stone Roses following The Smiths following the Happy Mondays, following the Courteeners etc etc. Maybe sticking more 60's and 70's music would be an idea.

I like Sweetmore and his music, I think we're lucky to have him. I just wish it wasn't quite so loud as it affects my ability to hold a conversation with anyone.

It must be different volume in different stands, it's not to bad in the moan stand tbf. Anyhow, like other people have said, the music is ok, but I must admit a bit of difference on occasion would be nice.

I don't really know the disc jockey at Spotland but if he couldn't play what he wanted is he the type of guy to pack up his records and leave?

I used to know a DJ like that, he branched out into Children's Parties but insisted on playing the Beach Boys greatest hits etc. It was always about what he wanted and he would never consider playing the Birdy Song for the kids.

In my experience most Disc Jockeys are selfish buggers.

I think a poster on here used to be a DJ...

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

It's the job of a DJ to play the music that his customers like to here, not the music that he likes!

Will he please do just one thing for me and my era for once.

Four minutes before the teams come out, start to play Elvis's American Trilogy.

AND THE DALE GO MAR CHINGGGG ONNNNNNNNNNNN.

It hasn't always been crap music though, when I was a young Dale fan the music was ace and hits like these regularly drifted over Spotland.

Boney M.....Rasputin.

David Soul.....Don't give up on us Baby.

Telly Savalas......If. (Wrist slitter)

Leo Sayer.....you make me feel like dancing.

Hot milky Coffee and Hiltons Pies and even Radio Manchesters sports introduction music was class....the Rockford Files.

It was a time when watching Rochdale Football Club used to make your eyes bleed (Donnelly would have been a star in that era) and even the tannoy blasting out those quality tunes couldn't drum up an atmosphere. Any crowd over a thousand was deemed as decent.

Always remember Dave Fletcher playing this when I started going. I even went back the week after!

Away fans love it because they only listen to it once or possibly twice a season. We've had to endure it every fortnight for the past ten years.

Plus, there is only one person from the occasional away team who says he/she likes it.

I like the music even though the majority I wouldn't ever listen to away from Spotland. And I agree with others that away fans seem to enjoy it too. I have no problem with Sweetmore either although I do wish he'd learn to pronounce things properly! "The scorer in the twetty-third minute, Bastien Hairy!"

He does vary what he plays though, it's not all "manc crap" as some call it. Recent tunes that stick in my mind Night Boat To Cairo and lets not forget Anarchy in the UK which was heard live on BT sport. If he played music for every specific age group would the older generations enjoy a bit of Swedish House Mafia? If the team came out to Matt Monro or Bing Crosby it would hardly help get them in the mood, Hendo would probably nod off!

Is the pre-match music not an area ripe for more fan involvement i.e increasing social media exposure? This might sound cheesy as owt but sweetmore/the club could ask fans for requests on the twitter or Facebook feeds. Makes fans feel "loved" and gives some variety to the choons.

Personally I walk into the ground 5 mins before kick off and go to the bar at H/T but what I do hear currently I like.

I'd definately look at modernising the terracing in the sandy lane to make it steeper, there is enough height in there to do it and the view is awful from the sandy in most parts. Obviously this probably wouldn't be looked into unless we owned the stadium.

How to make it a good view of the opposite end today in a small terraced stand.
Nice and steep !

No good on a fookin train though, is it?

Apart from ruining the journey for other passengers or worse, having them feel intimidated by what they'll perceive as a bunch of Rochdale knuckle-draggers (whether that's true or not, when not drunk)

Especially when those same fans can hardly raise a gallop at home

It's amazing how different the feeling is around the club compared to our debut season in League 1.

We're having a 'successful' season by all accounts and yet the atmopshere and mood is still flatter than my Nan's baps - this speaks volumes.

It would be unfair to leave it up to the manager to lift spirits and get the place bouncing again but by the same token, it would appear that he's done the complete opposite with his recent comments and behaviour.

If you were to look back at the interviews during our last successful League 1 spell, I'm sure KH would be his excitable old self, full of beans and ready to tackle the next game with a positive performance and outlook. The guy looks and sounds depressed at the moment and we're doing well. It's like he doesn't care. Surely that sort of negativity has a knock on effect?

I've been on a train with a bunch of drunk (and still drinking) Daleys, and it was bloody embarrassing. Not just Daleys of course, every club has it's share.

Activities included standing in front of a young woman trying to stop her leaving the carriage after being subject to vile abuse, deliberately spraying ale over passengers whilst opening cans, generally making sure the public knew that Rochdale was a place harbouring racist, sexist, homophobic morons. Ironic, that last bit, since half a dozen of you then started parading up and down the carriage pretending to bum each other.

Well done.

Interesting that on Tuesday, just before kick-off, when their PA started playing random dance anthems, the Dale fans sang along with their terrace songs (can't remember the names of the choooooons). An atmosphere happened.

Fortunately on Saturday, we'll be back to Sally Cinnamon, This is the One, The Seahorses and nothing else that'll get the fans motivated.
