why are all the kids from swansea joining up with cardif academies? on 19:18 - Mar 9 by waynekerr55 | I don't think that you need to be a top drawer player to be a top coach but it can help particularly with game understanding To be fair to KOL I watched a session last year and it was pretty good, can't comment on the others as I haven't seen them for years |
It helps Wayne. Why would they have brought in this Spaniard chap to oversee the whole academy project if it was all going to plan? We're Premier League with cat 2 status and we have a 20 something in charge of how it all works.Tony Avo is great but there's something not right down there with the scouting and coaching.

Yeah I know but to be fair Britain in general has a very narrow view of "how" to coach and it is reflected in the bulk of the academies across the country. Throw into the mix not very good pay and long hours and that's why most clubs don't attract top talent and when they do they move on - Mark Sampson is now England women's coach being an example. To be fair the club didn't need to employ a Spaniard to tell them what was going wrong - but it's part of the learning curve.

why are all the kids from swansea joining up with cardif academies? on 22:32 - Mar 8 by Liberty | 2 to 3 month winter break due to state of pitches is crazy. Either switch to astro turf for matches or play more in may to august, not like the heat will be a pain. Our system and pitches do not encourage passing football. Swansea junior football league need a shake up, think outside the box, change is good. |
Correct. April to October is a no brainer to me. The season can be played to the school calender with a break in the summer holidays to allow the clubs to still have their festivals. I'm talking specifically mini football which could easily be arranged around the cricket pitches surely? Junior football could even be played on a midweek evening if cricket is an issue.

There is so much that could be done, but is'nt. Do they play cricket at mynydd newydd in summer ? No, one example of many. Someone needs to take this on, it could be very successful. There is a demand and a need, facilities also. Either Swansea council or the Swans.

I know from first hand experience that no matter what the junior league plan to do, they are still customers of the local council and while the council favour the money of the adult game the the junior league can do absolutely nothing about pitches. The league has a duty to provide football that falls in line with the FAW rules and can't do that without the council pitches and the council don't give a toss and that's a FACT. I've spoken a lot recently about youth football on this forum and I speak from the heart. Unlike football skills schools coaches or administrators and CoE/Academy coaches who are trying to protect their image and reputation, I do what I do because I love watching young players enjoy and develop in the game we all love. I have no desire to make any money from it and I have no agenda, I want the best for each individual child I have had the privilege to work with. The incident at Ashleigh road yesterday has tipped my closer to the edge because no matter what you do, you are always at the mercy of people more interested in money.

I've tried the summer league but mynnydd gets used for cricket and they wont let anyone else you it. Mynnydd is my home pitch and it's annoying that it can't be used.

If I could run a summer football program through the summer in the parts of mynnydd that don't get used for cricket I would do it. Unfortunately every time i've pushed for it, the parks department have pushed back.

To give you an idea of how backward the junior league are, back in Oct I sent an e-mail to Rob Thomas of the FAW expressing some concerns about not only the poor quality of some pitches in use but also the inappropriate size of some of the pitches being used for U9 games. Obviously these concerns were then raised with the Swansea junior league, however instead of responding with a suitable reply they called our club secretary into a meeting and reminded them in no certain terms that my email was un-called for and that I didn't go through the correct channels. The same pitches are obviously still being used and no improvements have been made. Swansea has a strong history of producing top class footballers, sadly the lack of quality coming out of the city will continue to decrease unless something radical is done.

Just go through the correct channels, imagine how chaotic things would be if every disgruntled parent went directly to the league on such things? There are 4000 children in the junior league system, that's 4000-8000 parents. The league is run by volunteers who all have full time jobs and families. All they ask is that complaints go through the club to be dealt with properly. Having people willing to put themselves forward is brilliant, I'm sure if you speak to your club secretary they could put you forward for any positions on the league that come up. Be proactive and not reactive :)

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that I was the coach of one of our two teams at the time. The email was a spur of the moment thing borne out of frustration following another farcical Sunday morning.

Im not sure what you expect the league to do though, they are customers. Unfortunately it's council pitches or nothing. Until clubs are in a position to own their own pitches then there really isn't anything that can be done. There is talk of community funded and operated 3g pitches but at the moment that is at least 5 years off getting started. The FAW have spoken about part funding similar projects but again, these are really pipe dreams at the moment. It's like working with both hands tied behind your back. I've mentioned a summer football structure but a lot of last summer was as wet as this winter. The time of grass pitches has gone but we are not yet in a position to replace the number of pitches needed with 3g pitches which cost at least £850,000 per 11 a side pitch.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Darr. Thought, even if cricket was played, but with alot of space at Mynydd Newydd, thought there would be some space for both. Not going to bite, so that you ruin a decent thread, move on, nothing here of interest to you. You only have a pop after 11, just hope its not the drink kicking in again with you. Only half of mynnydd gets used for cricket. In fact none of the area assigned to mini football is used for cricket. You are still not allowed to use them, I've been threatened with fines for taking my lad there to practice because of my position even though it's a public park.

And they wonder why other countries are ahead of us technically. Poor pitches, so many matches cancelled, too competitive- too young, list goes on. Hope it changes for future generations.
