What I don't understand
at 23:53 11 Nov 2024

I think that actually illustrates my point that is who we are competing with, none of these clubs bar Luton have done too much, Stoke are doped through Bet 365. Nearly all have been in relegation battles over the last few years. or on the verge of going bust. The cost base is also lower for a number of them

Brighton and Brentford are the exceptions but they built well over a period of time and with betting databases.

Bournemouth breached FFP and got away with it by being up for so long and have never lost parachutes as have always gone back up

Fulham were doped years ago and again when relegated went straight back up

Luton came up through the leagues and went straight through, they will be languishing if they dont do better next season

Just signed up. Its Twitter as it was a few years ago in terms of functionality. Since the US election my X "For You" seems to have been turned up to max MAGA propeganda with a smattering of porn, Tommy Robinson and violence. It's such a shame.

I hope people make the switch to blue sky but its not yet got the volume of posts etc

Also cost us the game as both Boro's goals came down that side when he was unable to get back and cover properly

He has not signed 30 players in close season, recruitment successes and failures happen across multiple seasons we are still suffering from the splurge on Austin, Johanson etc, which left us with no head room then the failure to sell under Beale which left us with no money, so we could only sign players at the end of their career, one of which has been either crocked or suspended, the other one crocked, Cook the best of them all is not having a great season and Bergovic let go. They tried to correct it this summer by buying potential (which at least is a bit more long term thinking) but it's all gone pear shaped. These are 3/4 year old chickens coming home to roost

If you want to judge Gallen you have to do so on Charlton where he was for 8 years not Millwall for a few months

However the cards are stacked, we can compete with about 6 to 8 teams max in this division financially, we can't generate income, they can't spend the money (whether its spent well or not) that they might want. Who is going to come and plough in £20m a year to stand still unless we are in league 1 where you can spend

Leeds Utd Reflection

I dont think it is going to change tbh those 5 players we can do without maybe 1 2 at a stretch but we cannot cover this loss and most of these are long term by the time we get them back or are able to bring in loans it will be too late. Its bleak and most of these are muscle injuries not impact so something is very not right with the fitness and medical side

I dont think it's that simple, we can barely financially compete at this level, in terms of ground capacity and income and the way FFP is stacked. Typically you might expect half your signings to work and the rest to not do so. The more you have to sign, the more failures you will have.

Sure lots of mistakes and lots of gambles but who we are means we have to take bigger gambles as we cannot afford the cost of the more sure thing, we were not starting from a point of health here, it's going to take a few years to turn this around. The squad was awful last season, it's still poor our best starting 11 is probably good enough but half of them are long term injured. We have players who we can. probably develop over time but we dont have time. At least in Lg1 we are competitive financially.

And not just this season.. 4 years in the making since the Warburton splurge and the failure to sell our best players at a premium price 6-7m to buy half a squad less than Leeds spend on a single reserve player

Did you see how bad Coventry were against us? Utterly shambolic, and he is a good manager!

Manager is not our problem, injuries and squad depth are. We can't even go long ball as we dont have a target man striker in the club other than Frey

Its the same as last season, only know all our best players in every part of the pitch are long term injured. We are done baring a miracle. All we can hope for is we do an Ipswich / Birmingham once FFP shackles are removed in Lg1 and build and spend for the next 5 years sensibly i.e buy some strikers

I suspect the problem is still FFP though, Hayden was expensive and could not get in the starting 11 at the back end of the season. Bottom line is a club with our limited resources and FFP headroom cannot cope losing its best striker, attacking midfielder, midfielder, centre back and both left backs for 1/3 + of the season. This is more than one season in the making

Problem is he's had to put too many square pegs in round holes, you've got players who have barely any experience at this level having to play out of position because there are so many injuries and the squad is so unbalanced. If everyone is in different positions there is no opportunity to develop muscle memory, so they need thinking time which might be a split second but slows us down, and causes its own problems. Well drilled and organised teams are well drilled and organised when they instinctively no where they are supposed to be, where there team mate is supposed to be and what 2 or 3 things they may do on the ball.

As I said in another thread add the pressure, and the desperation and the managers decision making also becomes impacted. Last year he won us games, I dont think he's really cost us games this season but he is not having the impact he did before. and tbh very few managers we've had in recent years have any real in game impact before him.

You would see the same with Mark Robins at Coventry they were utterly woeful against us as bad as we have been this season for similar reasons

Correct - he also opened them up twice and would have been 3 times if Smyth had made the run he should off. There is a player there but we have to set up in the right way to get the most out of him as we did at Sunderland

Well at least it was not a thrashing.

We can change the manager I guess, it won't make an iota of difference IMHO.

Last year we were useless without Chair and JCS and now we are without Chair, JCS, Colback, Frey, Dembele, Paal - 5 players that make us materially better. Add to that Anderson, Cook and Fox seem to be really showing their age. Dunne's never been anything other than 3rd or 4th choice centre back and other than Field no other players have played at any decent level. It's not really a surprise.

Dont get me wrong I think the manager, in the situation and under the pressure we are, is making poor decisions as well. Last year Marti won us games, tactically and with Subs this season, I dont think he's cost us to many but he aint winning us any either.

Serious questions need to be asked of the fitness team, barely any of these are impact injuries

He's gone massively backwards this summer as well, overweight like a few in this team never good enough for this level

Well it could have been worse, there is effort there. Anderson struggling with pace. Saito doing alright at left wing back. Celar looking like striker for at least 30 minutes.

We are struggling on our right though. Ashby is utterly woeful defensively goal came from his poor play, and s a real weak link. Back three not great either including Captain Cook who is either carrying something or is checking out. Smyth having a very Smyth game when he starts, lots of endeavour and lots of mistakes

Well it's been a thoroughly depressing 24 hours and I wanted to take a bit of time to calm down and assess and gather my thoughts.

So let's start with the game and set up last night.

This I think Marti got it very wrong but also Carrick got it very right.

Attacking wise, it was a huge mistake to start both Chair and then Saito on the right, both wanted to come deep to get the ball and a big part of the success of the performance on Saturday was that we had the out ball for Smith to go in behind the defence.

This in turn meant that Madsen was pretty much playing as a second striker, much further forward than against Sunderland practically alongside Celar in a 4-4-2

Boro also went man to man on Morgan and starved him of any ball in the first 1/2, this meant we were slower in possession Chair and Saito would drop deep, Madsen and Celar outmanned backwards and sideways pass the only option. Can't hit a striker, can't play over the top or down the sides. We were slow in possession, outnumbered in midfield flat and out of ideas after 15 minutes and it was case of see if we can get through to half time and change it getting Smyth on, going back to 4-3-3

Santos was clearly struggling against Doek and seemingly can barely kick a ball with his left. We were kind of getting away with it and Chair was providing cover, and then Chair gets injured.
The decision to leave Chair on cost us the game. He could not run, and therefore could not cover or defend and the left side was left completely exposed, they score twice in the next 7 or 8 minutes whilst Chair is still hobbling around. Game over against a very good and superior Boro side. We had a mini fight back, score in that 5-10 minutes of shots and maybe we could get back into the game, but we all knew it was game over at half time.

So what could the manager have done differently I guess is the question. I dont understand why Smyth did not start on the right. Without him and because Celar offers nothing we had no out ball. Left back, could we have started Saito there against Doek, hell of a gamble. Would Morrison have been fit to play 90 mins out of position at LCB and push Field to LB, maybe but you can see the choices all look pretty bad. He should have hooked Chair but again if the medical staff are saying he can run it off.. Bad situations often lead to people making bad decisions

The options available in the squad with so many injuries are super limited, most of the team played well against Sunderland. Have we bought crap players? maybe but its my view that if you add 3 decent proven championship quality / experience players in the spine CB, CM and CF of this team that even with this injury crisis (and last year we needed our best 11 on the field to be competitive) that things would be very different. In the same way that Warburton turned a side looking destined for relegation and Warnock a side he barely kept up after 4 managers in a season and got it promoted the following season with most of the same squad but a few additions that made a huge difference.

I think that in the full force of the storm Marty is making mistakes that is true, and that happens when everything is going against you. But our problem is not what we have, it's what we dont have and we are at least 3 players short. Sadly I think we are in such a bad way that regardless of manager, and the length of time key players are out, I think we are done because I think we will be so far adrift by Xmas and we are so unbalanced in what we have available that its very hard to see how we get out of this

Saito replaced Smyth and went on the right
Ten minutes later Anderson replaced Madson, Chair went central and Saito went left

Fascinating reading through this thread and the TV view, from the ground performance best so far of the season, Celar better than previous game but not by much and many of the team dont trust him to pass so are looking for an alternative when an easier pass or he does make a run is on. Amazed he stayed on the full 90
