Unless you're a paid-up member of the Conservative party you have no say in who is going to be our next Prime Minister - so why are the TV channels showing these "debates"? They didn't do so for the Labour candidates after Blair left, or after Brown left. Surely they could have just left it to Conservative Central Office to film it themselves just for their members. This was just a couple of hours of Tory propaganda for free.

There was only one candidate when Blair left. Brown would have had to debate himself. Other than that, you’re right.

There was a Labour leadership debate televised though, wasn't there? I seem to remember one but not who was in it.

He's definitely the most sensible person in the contest, though that's a bit like being the tallest person in Lilliput. I would hate for Gove to be the next PM, and if it's Dominic Rabid I'm leaving the country.

Democracy working well here. I suppose freedom of speech works both ways. You don’t necessarily have to agree with it. A little extreme, wouldn’t you say?

Agreed and I thought that when I seen him on Marr a few weeks ago. When Rory challenged him on the debate last night did you see the look in his eyes? The flight or fight mode deciding... he’s dull and does not understand democracy if he thinks he can prorogue. He won’t get in anyway. Came last in the debate imo.

He doesn’t need to. He topped the poll I reckon in last night’s debate purely by not being there to open his mouth. He’s too far ahead at the moment to risk anything and he and his team know it. A sad state of politics in this country. What do they say? When America sneezes... You’d have thought we’d have learned from their debacles over the last few years but seem intent on copying them.

The problem is, where there are more than two in the debate, the person in the lead is a natural target. No issue with a debate between final two...
C4 Tory Leadership debate on 13:00 - Jun 17 with 1433 views | bluey_the_blue | Stewart is toast. "Q: In Ireland citizens’ assemblies have taken years to find policy solutions to problems. So why do you think one could be used in the UK to get a Brexit solution quickly? Stewart says any solution will have to be achieved through parliament. He says he will focus on getting the deal through parliament. He needs another 45 votes to do that. The citizens’ assembly plan would be a threat to encourage parliament to compromise. But if he fails to get the deal through parliament, he will need an alternative - something that forces MPs to think outside party political boundaries. He says a citizens’ assembly could be run like jury service. It could sit at weekends, and reach an agreement quite quickly. He says, if the citizens’ assembly comes up with something parliament does not want, parliament could reject it." "Q: What if the citizens’ assembly comes up with a plan the EU rejects? Stewart says, in that case, it would not happen. But he would expect the assembly to take evidence from people like Michel Barnier. He would not expect it to come up with a unicorn." So basically Stewart's position is he believes he can get May's deal through parliament by threatening a "citizen's assembly". That "assembly" would magically come up with a plan incredibly quickly by working weekends only. The "CA" plan could of course be rejected by parliament but he wouldn't expect it to because the "CA" would listen to what EU wants and base a plan off that. Bonkers.

True, but the real underlying issue is he still believes he can get May's deal through parliament. His tactic is an ineffectual threat. Given it's been voted down how many times now, he's literally on another planet. Anyone lookimg to get a deal shouldn't look at what Parliament has voted down but what Parliament has shown agreement for and right now it's only the Brady amendment that matches that criteria.
